      • Hughes beats Hughes, Devs edge Canucks
        October 19, 2019
        By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Tyson Jost had three goals, Pavel Francouz made 44 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 Saturday night to remain the only NHL team without a regulation loss this season.

Colorado's 7-0-1 start is the second-longest opening point streak in franchise history, behind only the 9-0-2 start in 2000-01.

Jost completed his first career hat trick with a pair of goals coming 2:49 apart early in the second period.

Colorado also got goals from Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen. Colin Wilson had three assists.

Yanni Gourde and Victor Hedman scored for the Lightning, who returned home after a 3-2-1 road trip. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 17 shots.

        DEVILS 1, CANUCKS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jack Hughes scored his first career goal in his first NHL game against his older brother Quinn Hughes, helping the Devils top the Canucks.

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 25 shots in his third career shutout, sending New Jersey to its second straight victory after starting the season with six straight losses.

Jack Hughes, 18, played in his eighth NHL game after he was selected by New Jersey with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. Quinn Hughes, 20, was a first-round selection by Vancouver in 2018.

There were approximately 80 Hughes family members and friends on hand for their first NHL matchup.

Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for Vancouver.

        GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots against his former team, leading the Golden Knights to the road win.

Fleury recorded his 445th win, tying Terry Sawchuck for seventh on the NHL career list. Fleury, who made his second career start for Vegas against the Penguins in Pittsburgh, also registered his 57th career shutout.

The Golden Knights won for the fourth time in five games. Paul Stastny scored his fourth of the season, a power-play goal in the second period, and William Karlsson and Mark Stone added empty-netters in the final 90 seconds.

Tristan Jarry made 21 saves for Pittsburgh, which had won five in a row.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, BRUINS 3, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Morgan Rielly scored his second goal of the game on a deflection of Mitch Marner's shot 3:54 into overtime, giving Toronto the victory.

Alexander Kerfoot and Dmytro Timashov also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Marner had two assists. Frederik Andersen stopped 42 shots.

David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist, and Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen also scored for the Bruins. Jaroslav Halak finished with 25 saves.

        STARS 4, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell and Corey Perry scored to help Dallas snap a five-game losing streak.

Ben Bishop stopped 38 shots for the slow-starting Stars, who improved to just 2-7-1. The Stars only took 16 shots against a listless Flyers team playing their first home game in 10 days.

Sean Couturier scored for Philadelphia, and Carter Hart made just 12 saves.

        PANTHERS 3, PREDATORS 2, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vincent Trocheck scored the deciding goal in the shootout to give Florida the road win.

Denis Malgin and Brett Connolly scored in regulation for Florida, which has won two of three. The Panthers have gone to overtime in four of their eight games this season.

Florida's Sam Montembeault made 25 saves and denied all three Nashville shooters in the shootout.

Roman Josi and Kyle Turris scored for Nashville, which has lost three of four. Ryan Ellis had two assists for the Predators, who played their first overtime game of the season.

ISLANDERS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Brock Nelson scored 33 seconds into overtime, lifting the Islanders to their fourth straight win.

Nelson beat Joonas Korpisalo from the slot off a feed from Nick Leddy.

Columbus' Boone Jenner tied the score late in the second period when he pounced on a puck that fell out of New York goalie Thomas Greiss' glove after a shot by Dean Kukan. The third period was scoreless.

Mathew Barzal and Michael Dal Colle also scored for the Islanders. Greiss had 34 saves.

Seth Jones scored and Korpisalo finished with 31 saves as Columbus lost in overtime for the second consecutive night.

        CANADIENS 5, BLUES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Brendan Gallagher, Jonathan Drouin and Nick Suzuki scored in the second period, leading Montreal to the victory.

Jordan Weal and Shea Weber also scored for the Canadiens, who won for the third time in four games. Carey Price made 32 saves in his 325th win, passing Sean Burke for 27th on the NHL career list.

St. Louis dropped its fourth straight game. Jaden Schwartz and David Perron scored for the Stanley Cup champions, and Jake Allen made 20 saves in his first home start since Jan. 8.

        COYOTES 5, SENATORS 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, Antti Raanta stopped 34 shots and the surging Coyotes outlasted the Senators.

Kyle Capobianco posted his first NHL goal for the Coyotes, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored in the first period. Carl Soderberg added a goal in the third period and Lawson Crouse had an empty-netter for Arizona, which has 20 goals during a five-game points streak.

Raanta, who was injured most of last season, earned his first win since last Nov. 2 against Carolina.

The Senators made a late push, pulling within two goals after Vladislav Namestnikov and Chris Tierney scored in the third period. Craig Anderson stopped 23 shots.

            **************************

            Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday…….

            13) Texas 50, Kansas 48— Les Miles is going to build a winner in Lawrence; this was the first game as offensive coordinator for Brent Dearmon, who was a head coach at the NAIA level LY.

Texas kicked a 33-yard FG at the gun to win this game, but good things are ahead for Kansas.

            12) Oregon 35, Washington 31— Huskies led 28-14 with 9:00 left in third quarter, but Oregon rallied back for the win, scoring winning TD with 5:10 left. Fun game to watch.

            11) Illinois 24, Wisconsin 23— Badgers hadn’t trailed in any game this season until kid from Illinois made a 39-yard FG at the gun. This is the biggest pointspread upset so far this year.

            10) Oklahoma 52, West Virginia 14— Austin Kendall is WVU’s quarterback:
            — As a freshman in 2016, threw 16 passes as a backup QB for Oklahoma.
            — Red-shirted the 2017 season.
            — Last year, he threw four passes as a backup QB for the Sooners.

Kendall graduated from Oklahoma in three years; he is working on two Masters’ degrees. When he decided to go to West Virginia, the Sooners tried to block the transfer, because WVU is a big X rival of the Sooners, but they eventually relented.

            9) Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin posted a pic on Twitter showing three officials walking on the field, all using seeing eye dogs. Thats going to be an expensive tweet.

            8) Florida 38, South Carolina 27— Gators’ QB Trask, who didn’t start for his high school team, threw for 200 yards, four TD’s as Florida improves to 7-1 on a rainy day in Columbia.

            7) Upsets of the Week:
            — Illinois (+30.5) 24, Wisconsin 23
            — Vanderbilt (+21) 21, Missouri 14
            — Georgia Tech (+18) 28, Miami 21 (OT)
            — Oregon State (+10.5) 21, California 17
            — Eastern Michigan (+10) 34, Western Michigan 27
            — Baylor (+8) 45, Oklahoma State 27

            6) Baylor 45, Oklahoma State 27— Matt Rhule went 28-23 coaching Temple (20-7 the last two years); he is 15-17 at Baylor, but 7-0 this year- the guy can coach.

            5) Georgia Tech 28, Miami 21 OT— Yellow Jackets scored a defensive TD, scored on a fake punt and blocked a 25-yard FG near the end of regulation. Hurricanes missed three FG’s in all, all of them 34 yards or shorter.

Miami desperately needs to recruit a kicker, or find a soccer player on campus who can fill the void; they’ve missed six FG’s of 34 or less yards this season, plus two PAT’s.

            4) Ohio U 45, Kent State 38— Game was 24-all at half; Golden Flashes (20-1) cashed in at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas, scoring the first TD of the day. Yes, you can bet on that.

Ohio U had a great onside kick in this game; their kicker just drilled the ball straight ahead, it hit the Kent State player 1o yards away in the helmet, popped in the air, and #81 on Ohio caught it.

            3) Virginia Tech 43, North Carolina 41 OT— Starting in the 5th overtime, teams alternate 2-point conversion tries to decide the winner; I think this was the first time it actually happened.

            2) Appalachian State 52, UL-Monroe 7— 6-0 Mountaineers are ranked #24 in country, with a win at North Carolina. Not often a Sun Belt team gets ranked nationally.

            1) Louisiana Tech 45, Southern Mississippi 30— Total on this game was 58.5; always helps the over when the opening kickoff gets run back for a TD. Tech is 5-1 vs I-A opponents, averaging 45 ppg.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

Hey, I’m going in the shop Tuesday for my 60,000-mile checkup; be back as soon as I can.

                              13) When he was 16 years old, Jose Altuve went to an Astros’ tryout camp in Venezuela, but was cut because the Astros considered him to be too short.

Altuve went back the next day, where he earned his way into a deal with Houston and a signing bonus of $15,000, a small bonus.

Starting next year, Altuve will be making $29M a year; good thing he went back to that tryout.

                              12) From the 2017 NFL Draft:
                              #2— Mitchell Trubisky, Bears
                              #10— Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
                              #12— Deshaun Watson, Texans

If I owned the Bears, I might be asking my GM some questions……..

                              11) So far this season, NFL road underdogs are 45-23-2 ATS.

                              10) CG Technology in Las Vegas took two money-line bets on the Chicago Bears Sunday, totaling $540,000, so when the Saints beat Chicago, CG Technology was

                              9) Troy Aikman is an assistant coach at Episcopal School of Dallas, where his stepson plays WR; Aikman does NFL games on Thursday/Sunday, but is on the Episcopal sideline Friday nites.

                              8) Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa has a high ankle sprain, is expected to miss a game or two.

In 2022, Alabama is playing Austin Peay in football; why????

Play them in basketball, when they would actually have a chance; it is a ripoff to fans for a dominant program like Alabama to play a I-AA team. Play a Sun Belt team, a MAC team, play Rutgers or UMass. Or, have some onions and play UAB, an in-state team.

                              7) Jets’ G Kelechi Osemele told reporters that he played in pain for the first three games, took painkillers (Toradal) prescribed by the Jets and needs surgery to repair a torn labrum; the Jets think Osemele had a pre-existing condition and can play; he was cleared to play by team doctors and an independent doctor.

Osemele is making $10.2M this season, and his $9.3M base salary is guaranteed because he’s a vested veteran. Oy.

                              6) Was watching an old movie (1987) Sunday night, Less Than Zero, with Andrew McCarthy and Robert Downey Jr; the female lead in the movie is Jami Gertz, who is married to the owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, Tony Ressler.

Ms Gertz has represented the Hawks at the NBA Draft Lottery a couple of times; ironically, the Hawks’ chances of winning an NBA title are less than zero.

                              5) Of the 27 guys in last year’s NBA All-Star Game, only two of them (Bradley Beal, Kemba Walker) played in all 82 regular season games.

                              4) New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie Zion Williamson had his knee scoped, is out 6-8 weeks.

                              3) Washington Redskins (+9.5) covered at home Sunday, losing 9-0 to the 49ers; they’re only second team in last 25 years to cover while being shut out. In 2007, the Dolphins (+16) lost 3-0 to the Steelers.

                              2) If you bet on every NFL road team this season, you would’ve shown a profit every week- road teams are 62-38-2 ATS in the NFL this year.

                              1) RIP to major league umpire Eric Cooper, 52, who passed away over the weekend; Cooper is one of only two umpires ever who worked the plate for two no-hitters by the same pitcher (Mark Buehrle). Cooper worked the New York-Minnesota playoff series couple weeks ago.

The other umpire is Ed Vargo, who worked two of Sandy Koufax’s no-hitters.

                              • The home team has dominated this series, and the NHL bets you need to make this week
                                Monty Andrews

It's a new week of NHL action and while the Dallas Stars have been the worst profit bet so far this season they are in a good position to turn things around with a Thursday matchup against Anaheim. We bring you the top matchups, betting notes, trends and predictions on the ice as we enter a new week of NHL action.

                                AN OLD FOE

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins treated fans to some playoff-caliber hockey in their previous meeting Saturday, and they'll do it all again in Tuesday's rematch at TD Garden. Following a 4-3 overtime win in their first go-around of the season, the Maple Leafs will look to end an unsettling trend that has seen them lose each of their previous three regular-season visits to Boston by a combined score of 15-5. The Bruins have been particularly stingy at home so far this season (six goals allowed over three games), so we see this one coming in below the number.

                                OVER EASY

Don't be surprised to see one game total this week touch 7, as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning do battle Wednesday night at Amalie Arena. Not only do these teams boast two of the most dangerous top lines in all of hockey, but they've brought out the big guns in their head-to-head series. The Penguins and Lightning have combined for seven or more goals in nine consecutive meetings and 13 of their previous 14 overall, while scoring three or more first-period goals in each of their previous five meetings. If it gets to 7 and you get squeamish, you might want to consider the Over on the first-period total instead.

                                NO PLACE LIKE HOME

The visiting team has come up empty for nearly four years in the head-to-head series between Anaheim and Dallas – and that's bad news for the Ducks, who pay a visit to American Airlines Center on Thursday. The home team has won each of the previous 12 meetings between the teams, with each of those games decided in regulation. But while bettors likely won't get great odds on the home side here, consider that each of the previous four games have produced seven or more goals. That makes the Dallas/Over play an intriguing one, at much better odds than a straight Stars victory.

GOALIE PROFILE: CARTER HUTTON, BUFFALO SABRES

You can't crown a Vezina Trophy winner after just a handful of games; that would be dumb. But if you could, Hutton would be at or near the top of the list of candidates. Hutton is off to a blistering start, coming into the week with a 5-0-0 record, a league-leading 1.39 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.

He saved his best work for last week, racking up back-to-back shutout wins over Dallas and Los Angeles while stopping all 72 shots he faced (including a whopping 47 against the Kings). The Sabres are 5-0 SU (duh) and 2-3 O/U in Hutton's five appearances this season.

INJURY UPDATE: F ALEKSANDER BARKOV, FLORIDA PANTHERS

The Panthers could be in deep trouble this week, with their No. 1 center considered day-to-day after leaving early in Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over the Nashville Predators with an upper-body injury. Barkov's injury is said to be minor, but it isn't clear whether he will suit up for Tuesday's encounter with the visiting Penguins. Making things worse for Florida: Barkov's wingers, Evgenii Dadonov and Jonathan Huberdeau are also dealing with minor injuries, though it isn't known if they're expected to miss any time. Given this injury uncertainty, it might be a good spot to nab the Pens as a road underdog.

                                HAT TRICK TRENDS

                                • The Over has retained a slight edge over the Under as we enter a new week on the NHL calendar. Despite there being 24 Unders compared to 23 Overs in the previous seven days, Overs still convert at a 51.7-percent clip of non-push outcomes, with the Under coming in at 48.3 percent so far.

                                • Peter MacDougall is at it again. The veteran official has overseen the most high-scoring games of any referee in the league, with his matchups going a perfect 8-0 O/U with an average of 8.38 goals scored. MacDougall was one of the top Over officials last season, as well, with a 21-9 O/U mark and 6.80 total goals scored per game.

                                • The Buffalo Sabres and Colorado Avalanche are the early profit leaders, with the 7-1-1 Sabres having returned an impressive +6.16 units to date and the 7-0-1 Avalanche a close second at 6.06 units won. The Edmonton Oilers (+4.18 units) round out the top three, while the Dallas Stars are bringing up the rear at -5.32 units.
