        Canadiens respond to Ovechkin hit with scoring flurry

        WASHINGTON (AP) Shea Weber scored to extend his points streak to five games, Carey Price made 25 saves and the Montreal Canadiens responded to a big hit by Alex Ovechkin on Jonathan Drouin, beating the Washington Capitals 5-2 on Friday night.

        Phillip Danault, Weber, Jordan Weal and Nick Suzuki scored after Ovechkin flattened Drouin with an open ice hit that knocked him out for the rest of the second period. Drouin returned for the third.

        Ovechkin's shoulder-to-shoulder blow on Drouin was the first big highlight of the night after a ho-hum first period. Ovechkin appeared to leave his feet to deliver the blow, and Drouin was slow to get up before skating to the bench and going down the tunnel.

        Four goals in 11 minutes after the hit provided enough support for Price, who beat the Capitals for just the eighth time in 27 career games. Price's biggest save came a few shifts after Drouin's injury when he denied Jonas Siegenthaler and was bailed out by defenseman Brett Kulak blocking the rebound, and he made a series of crucial stops in the final minutes.

        Ovechkin scored on the power play in the third period, his 14th of the season, and Evgeny Kuznetsov added a breakaway goal with 4:22 left to make things interesting. Tomas Tatar sealed it with an empty-netter.

        BLUE JACKETS 3, BLUES 2, OT

        COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Zach Werenski scored 3:34 into overtime to lift Columbus past St. Louis.

        With the Blue Jackets on a 4-on-3 power play, Werenski buried a shot from the right circle. He has scored in three straight games.

        Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Columbus early in the third period to tie it at 2. Vladislav Gavrikov got his first NHL goal and Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves for the Blue Jackets.

        Mackenzie McEachern and Brayden Schenn scored for the Stanley Cup champion Blues, who lost a second consecutive game in overtime. Jake Allen, starting ahead of Jordan Binnington on the first night of a back-to-back, had 36 saves.

        BRUINS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2

        TORONTO (AP) - Brad Marchand scored two third-period goals to help Boston beat Toronto.

        Charlie Coyle had a goal and an assist, Zdeno Chara added a goal, and Tuukka Rask made 29 saves. The Bruins snapped a 0-2-2 skid.

        Auston Matthews and Kasperi Kapanen scored for Toronto, and Frederik Andersen made 30 saves. The Maple Leafs have dropped four straight games, the last three in regulation.

        DEVILS 2, PENGUINS 1

        NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mackenzie Blackwood made 38 saves and Travis Zajac and Blake Coleman scored in New Jersey's victory over Pittsburgh.

        Jack Johnson scored for Penguins and Matt Murray made 19 saves.

        It was Pittsburgh's first game without star center Sidney Crosby. He's expected to miss at least six weeks following surgery for a core muscle injury.

        SENATORS 2, FLYERS 1

        OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Filip Chlapik scored in the second period, Anders Nilsson made 26 saves and Ottawa killed off a late four-minute power play to beat Philadelphia.

        Ottawa's Colin White took a double minor for high-sticking Claude Giroux with just over four minutes remaining. The Flyers pulled Carter Hart for a two-man advantage, but were unable to score.

        Tyler Ennis also scored for Ottawa. Tyler Pitlick scored for Philadelphia.

            Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out cluttered mind……

            13) Browns’ DE Myles Garrett was suspended indefinitely (minimum of 6 games) by the NFL after the fracas at the end of the Browns’ game with Pittsburgh Thursday night.

            Cleveland DT Larry Ogunjobi was also suspended for a game; Pittsburgh’s center Maurkice Pouncey was suspended for three games.

            12) Shaky programming move by ESPN, putting the UNC-Pitt game on Thursday night, same time the Steelers were playing. Wednesday or Friday would’ve worked better.

            11) Pittsburgh Pirates hired former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington as their new GM, then fired assistant GM Kyle Stark. Cherington was GM in Boston when they won the 2013 World Series, but got the boot two years later- they’re not real patient in Boston.

            Cherington’s first job is probably to hire a manager, seeing how the Pirates don’t have one yet after they fired Clint Hurdle.

            10) West Virginia 68, Pittsburgh 53— ESPNU’s analyst for this game was Chris Spatola, who is Mike Krzyzewski’s son-in-law. Pitt is coached by former Dukie Jeff Capel; they did couple of segments during the game where they showed Pitt’s new locker room, it was like a Pitt Panther infomercial, geared towards recruits.

            Meanwhile, West Virginia has a big kid named Oscar Tshiebwe who dominated the game inside, with 20 points, 17 rebounds in his second college game. Mountaineers have won four in a row over Pitt for first time since 1977.

            9) Rhode Island 93, Alabama 79— Solid win for the A-14, with URI forcing 22 turnovers (+10).

            8) Gonzaga 79, Texas A&M 49— Zags are this generation’s version of the Jerry Tarkanian UNLV teams; a national power that dominates a mid-major league in January-February, and uses pre-conference play to test itself in games like this. Aggies shot 30.4% from floor in this game.

            7) NFL stuff:
            — Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford (back) is out again this week.
            — Vikings’ WR Adam Thielen (hamstring) is out again this week.
            — Eagles put RB Darren Sproles on IR, ending his season.

            6) NBA stuff:
            — Nets’ F Caris LeVert (thumb) will likely miss 4-6 weeks.
            — Hawks’ F Kevin Huerter (shoulder) is out two weeks.

            5) A few over/under numbers for CONFERENCE wins in college hoop:

                  Kuemper records shutout, Coyotes beat Flames 3-0

                  GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Darcy Kuemper stopped 37 shots and slammed an opponent to the ice during a brawl in the second period, and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Calgary Flames 3-0 Saturday.

                  After Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau cross-checked Arizona's Jason Demers late in the second period while Demers was down on the ice, Kuemper put the Flames' Matthew Tkachuk in a headlock and flipped him off his feet. Tkachuk came up swinging and landed a few blows on Kuemper in a dustup that also included Calgary goaltender David Rittich barreling in from the other side of the rink.

                  The crowd chanted Kuemper's name as he returned to the net. Three Flames and two Coyotes combined for 14 penalty minutes. Vinnie Hinostroza served Kuemper's four-minute roughing penalty, and Rasmus Andersson sat for two minutes on Rittich's behalf.

                  Derek Stepan, Carl Soderberg and Lawson Crouse scored, and Arizona won for the third time in four games.

                  Kuemper and forward Nick Schmaltz played in their 200th career NHL games.

                  STARS 5, OILERS 4, OT

                  EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Jamie Benn scored 1:14 into overtime, and Dallas beat Edmonton for its third consecutive win.

                  Benn converted a backhand to close out Dallas' 3-0-1 trip to Canada. It was Benn's first goal since Oct. 10 and his second on the season.

                  Jason Dickinson, Miro Heiskanen, Blake Comeau and Tyler Seguin also scored for the Stars (11-8-2), who have won 10 of 12 overall.

                  Jujhar Khaira scored two goals for the Oilers (13-6-3), who have lost two of three. Leon Draisaitl and Ethan Bear also scored.

                  JETS 4, LIGHTNING 3

                  TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves and Winnipeg overcame Steven Stamkos' 400th goal and beat Tampa Bay.

                  The 29-year-old Stamkos is the ninth active player and 98th overall to reach the milestone.

                  Mathieu Perreault, Nikolaj Ehlers, Jack Roslovic and Kyle Connor scored for Winnipeg, which is on a 6-1-1 roll. The Jets are 9-1-1 in one-goal games.

                  Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 23 saves. Victor Hedman got his fourth of the season for Tampa Bay. Anthony Cirelli also scored.

                  KINGS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3

                  LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jeff Carter scored in his 1,000th career game and Los Angeles beat Vegas for its third straight victory.

                  Drew Doughty had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who are on their longest win streak of the season. Nikolai Prokhorkin scored his first career goal, and Jonathan Quick made 28 saves.

                  Max Pacioretty and Jonathan Marchessault each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights, who have lost five straight. William Karlsson also scored, and Malcolm Subban made 21 saves.

                  Carter tipped Matt Roy's shot from the blue line to put the Kings ahead 4-3 at 12:42 of the third period. It was the 371st career goal and 713th point for Carter, who also played his 500th game with the Kings.

                  HURRICANES 4, WILD 3, OT

                  ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Andrei Svechnikov's goal 1:33 into overtime lifted Carolina to a victory over Minnesota.

                  Joel Edmundson, Brock McGinn and Warren Foegele also scored for Carolina. James Reimer made 32 saves.

                  Luke Kunin, Zach Parise and Carson Soucy, who netted his first NHL goal, scored for the Wild. Dave Dubnyk made 24 saves.

                  PENGUINS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 1

                  PITTSBURGH (AP) - Dominik Kahun scored two goals and Pittsburgh routed Toronto.

                  Kahun matched a career-high with three points. Bryan Rust also had a three-point game, with a short-handed goal and two assists.

                  Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and an assist, and Jared McCann also scored for the Penguins, who bounced back from Friday's 2-1 loss at New Jersey. The Penguins have won three of their last seven games, but have points in seven of their last nine games.

                  Tristan Jarry made 32 saves for Pittsburgh. Jarry has allowed two or fewer goals in four of five outings.

                  Jason Spezza scored his second for Toronto. The Maple Leafs lost their fifth straight, their longest skid of the season.

                  Kasimir Kaskisuo stopped 31 shots for Toronto in his NHL debut.

                  ISLANDERS 4, FLYERS 3

                  PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier scored twice during New York's three-goal, third-period rally, and the Islanders beat Philadelphia in a shootout.

                  Beauvillier and Mathew Barzal combined to erase a 3-0 deficit in the final 13 minutes of regulation, and Jordan Eberle and Barzal scored in the shootout.

                  The Islanders are on a 13-0-1 roll that has vaulted them into second place in the Metropolitan Division behind Washington. It's New York's longest stretch without a regulation loss since a 15-game run in 1982.

                  Thomas Greiss stopped 28 shots for the Islanders.

                  Sean Couturier and Ivan Provorov and Oskar Lindblom scored for the Flyers.

                  CAPITALS 3, BRUINS 2, SO.

                  BOSTON (AP) - T.J. Oshie tied it with 59 seconds left in regulation and Jakub Vrana scored the decisive goal in the shootout as Washington beat Boston in a matchup of the Eastern Conference's top teams.

                  Charlie Coyle scored to open the shootout for Boston, but Braden Holtby stopped the next four tries. Nicklas Backstrom tied it on Washington's third try and then, after Jaroslav Halak's glove save on Alex Ovechkin went to a replay review, Vrana scored the winner.

                  Holtby stopped 21 shots for Washington, which outshot the Bruins 44-23 in regulation. Travis Boyd scored in regulation for the NHL-best Capitals.

                  David Pastrnak scored to break a second-period tie, and Coyle also had a goal in regulation for Boston. Halak made 42 saves for Boston, which has beaten the Capitals just once in 15 tries (0-11-4).

                  PANTHERS 4, RANGERS 3

                  SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Evgenii Dadonov scored twice to lead Florida over New York.

                  Mike Hoffman and Brett Connolly also scored, and Jonathan Huberdeau and Keith Yandle each had three assists for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots to help coach Joel Quenneville get his 900th career victory.

                  Huberdeau increased his career total to 252 assists, taking over the franchise record after coming in tied with Stephen Weiss.

                  Ryan Strome, Artemi Panarin and Tony DeAngelo scored for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 26 saves.

                  SABRES 4, SENATORS 2

                  BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel scored four goals to lead Buffalo over Ottawa.

                  It was the first four-goal performance of Eichel's five-year NHL career, and the first by a Sabres player since Thomas Vanek in April 2010. It was Eichel's second hat trick, with the first coming on Dec. 15, 2017, against Carolina.

                  The Sabres snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 10-6-3.

                  Linus Ullmark made 21 saves for Buffalo.

                  Tyler Ennis and Anthony Duclair scored for Ottawa, which lost after consecutive wins. Craig Anderson made 28 saves.

                  DEVILS 4, CANADIENS 3, OT.

                  MONTREAL (AP) - Kyle Palmieri scored a power-play goal 1:30 into overtime to complete New Jersey's comeback from two goals down in a win over Montreal.

                  Nikita Gusev, Nico Hischier and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Devils, who trailed 3-1 late in the second. Mackenzie Blackwood, playing his second game in two nights, stopped 31 shots.

                  Brendan Gallagher, Cale Fleury and Nick Suzuki scored for the Canadiens, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Keith Kinkaid made 39 saves against his former team.

                  DUCKS 4, BLUES 1

                  ST. LOUIS (AP) - Derek Grant recorded his first career hat trick, Ryan Getzlaf added a goal and an assist, and Anaheim beat St. Louis.

                  It was just the second multigoal game of Grant's 229-game career and first since Oct. 20, 2017.

                  John Gibson made 37 saves as the Ducks snapped a five-game losing streak.

                  Vince Dunn scored and Jordan Binnington made 21 saves for the Blues, who had their nine-game points streak snapped with their first regulation loss since October 26.

                  BLACKHAWKS 7, PREDATORS 2

                  NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, and Chicago routed Nashville for its third straight victory.

                  Robin Lehner made 39 saves for Chicago, and Alex Nylander had two goals in the third period. Erik Gustafsson, Dominik Kubalik, Brent Seabrook and David Kampf also scored.

                  The Blackhawks improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven games. It was a markedly different performance than their first meeting with Nashville this season, a dominant 3-0 win for the Predators on Oct. 29.

                  Nashville got two goals from defenseman Roman Josi in its fourth consecutive loss. Pekka Rinne allowed four goals in 14 shots before he was replaced by Juuse Saros.

                  Kane's goal-scoring streak reached five games and his point streak eight.

                  AVALANCHE 5, CANUCKS 4, OT

                  VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon scored his second goal of the game 27 seconds into overtime, lifting Colorado past Vancouver.

                  MacKinnon used his speed to go around a Canucks defender and scored on goalie Thatcher Demko's blocker side.

                  Andre Burakovsky had a goal and an assist, and Nazem Kadri and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored to help the Avalanche improve to 4-1-0 in their last five games. Rookie defenseman Cale Makar added four assists.

                  Colorado goalie Antoine Bibeau, who was making his first NHL start since the 2016-17 season when he started two games for Toronto, stopped 28 shots.

                  Adam Gaudette had two power-play goals, and Alex Edler and Brock Boeser also scored for Vancouver, which fell to 1-4-2 in its last seven games. Josh Leivo had two assists and Demko had 18 saves.

                  SHARKS 4, RED WINGS 3, SO

                  SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Labanc had a goal, two assists and the shootout winner as San Jose beat Detroit for its sixth straight win.

                  Logan Couture had three assists and Erik Karlsson and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored for San Jose.

                  Andreas Athanasiou scored twice and Taro Hirose added one for Detroit, which has dropped 12 of 16.

                  The Sharks moved to .500 (10-10-1) for the first time since they were 3-3 on Oct. 15.

                  Martin Jones had 25 saves and stopped all three Red Wings attempts in the shootout.

                  Jimmy Howard had 16 saves and stopped 2 of 3 shootout attempts.

                              Kane, Dach lead Blackhawks past Sabres 4-1
                              November 17, 2019

                              CHICAGO (AP) Patrick Kane extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 on Sunday night for their fourth straight victory.

                              Kirby Dach scored twice as the resurgent Blackhawks improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Jonathan Toews added his fourth of the season, and Corey Crawford made 33 saves.

                              Kane won a battle with Buffalo defenseman Marco Scandella for a loose puck during a third-period power play, and then beat Carter Hutton on the glove side for his team-best 11th goal. The star forward has eight goals and nine assists during a nine-game point streak.

                              Jack Eichel scored his fifth goal in two days, but banged-up Buffalo lost for the seventh time in eight games. Eichel had four goals in the Sabres' 4-2 victory over Ottawa on Saturday.

                              Buffalo played without forward Kyle Okposo, who left the win against the Senators with a possible head injury. Okposo accidentally collided with Senators defenseman Ron Hainsey after he got on the ice for a line change.

                              ''It's the type of injury that just needs a little space,'' coach Ralph Krueger said. ''We'll know more for sure by tomorrow.''

                              Okposo was sidelined for part of last season after he was diagnosed with his third concussion in less than three years.

                              Buffalo also has lost Vladimir Sobotka, Marcus Johansson and Johan Larsson to injuries this month.

                              The 18-year-old Dach got each of his goals on the backhand side. It was the first career multigoal game for the rookie, who was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft.

                              Dach's shot from the left circle in the first went off the stick of a backchecking Eichel and fluttered over Hutton. He made it 2-0 in the second when he flipped a slick backhand into the net at 12:32 for his fifth goal in 14 games this season.

                              NOTES: F Tage Thompson made his season debut for Buffalo, replacing Okposo in the lineup. Thompson was recalled from Rochester of the AHL. ... D Henri Jokiharju was back in Chicago after he was traded to Buffalo in July for F Alex Nylander. The 20-year-old Jokiharju was selected by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2017 draft, but he fell out of favor with the club after Jeremy Colliton took over as coach last season. ''I think it's a little bit how the coach sees you as a player and as a person,'' Jokiharju said, ''so I think that was one of the issues in here.'' ... Blackhawks D Brent Seabrook skated in his 1,100th NHL game.
