Tkachuk scores in OT, Senators beat Canadiens 2-1

MONTREAL (AP) Brady Tkachuk went five-hole on Carey Price 38 seconds into overtime to lift the Ottawa Senators over the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 Wednesday night.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Senators, who have won four of five. Craig Anderson stopped 35 shots.

Montreal rookie Nick Suzuki scored in the second period, and Price stopped 22 shots for the Canadiens a day after allowing five goals in Columbus.

RANGERS 4, CAPITALS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Artemi Panarin scored twice, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 shots, and New York beat short-handed Washington.

Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and an assist, Brett Howden also scored, and Kaapo Kakko added two assists for the Rangers, who ended a two-game skid and improved to 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. Lundqvist earned his 454th win, tying Curtis Joseph for fifth on the NHL's career list.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored and Braden Holtby made 27 saves for first-place Washington, which lost in regulation for the second time in four games after an 11-0-2 stretch. The Capitals failed to earn a point for only the fourth time in 24 games, including the second time in 13 on the road.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) In 1941, Franklin Roosevelt and Congress established Thanksgiving as a United States federal holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, which makes November 28th the latest it can be, which is when it is this year.

12) For me, college basketball season starts when I watch the Maui Classic, which is always Monday-Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. With college ball starting November 5th this year, it has been a lackluster 16 nights of basketball so far, filled with buy games and not a lot of great matchups.

That changes starting today, with holiday tournaments beginning, and that is a good thing.

11) NFL underdogs are 89-68-6 ATS so far this season.

10) Not sure how they came up with this decision, but Memphis Tigers’ freshman center James Wiseman is suspended for another 11 games; he will be eligible to play on January 12 against South Florida. Memphis is very young but very, very talented.

4) An average of 6.2 goals/game are being scored in the NHL this season, the league’s 2nd-highest average in the last 23 years, behind the 2005-06 season.

3) NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs fired coach Mike Babcock after a 9-10-4 start- they lost their last six games. Babcock won the Stanley Cup coaching the 2007-08 Red Wings; he’s won three conference titles, and has a career record of 67-56 in playoff games.

NEW YORK (AP) Brock Nelson scored his second goal of the game 4:16 into overtime, and the New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Thursday night to extend their point streak to a franchise-record 16 games.

Nelson, who also scored the overtime winner at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, got a pass from Mathew Barzal on the left side on a rush. He cut across the front of a goal to avoid a defender and draw goalie Matt Murray out of position, and then backhanded the puck into the right side for his eighth.

The Islanders improved to 15-0-1 during their streak while winning their fifth straight since an overtime loss to the Penguins on Nov. 7. New York had earned points in 15 straight games three times previously, the last during a 15-game win streak in the 1981-82 season.

Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Murray finished with 20 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Sheldon Keefe won his coaching debut with Toronto, and the Maple Leafs stopped a six-game slide.

Auston Matthews, Tyson Barrie and Pierre Engvall scored for Toronto, and Frederik Andersen stopped 30 shots. It was Barrie's first goal of the season, and the first one of Engvall's career.

Keefe took over for the fired Mike Babcock on Wednesday.

Vinnie Hinostroza scored for Arizona with 17 seconds left. Darcy Kuemper finished with 29 saves.

PANTHERS 5, DUCKS 4, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aaron Ekblad scored his second goal of the game 22 seconds into overtime, and the Panthers rallied with five straight goals.

Brett Connolly sparked the comeback with two goals in 27 seconds in the second period, and Dominic Toninato tied it with 4:23 remaining in the third. Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves, and Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau each had two assists.

Florida became the second team in NHL history to overcome a deficit of four-plus goals to win a game multiple times in a season, joining the 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers. The Panthers also pulled off the trick in a 5-4 shootout win at Boston on Nov. 12.

Ondrej Kase had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, and Rickard Rakell, Nick Ritchie and Max Jones also scored. John Gibson stopped 23 shots.

CANUCKS 6, PREDATORS 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Bo Horvat scored one of Vancouver's five power-play goals, and the Canucks stopped a three-game slide.

Vancouver went 5 for 6 with the man advantage. Elias Pettersson had a goal and two assists, and Tyler Graovac, J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser also scored power-play goals before Tanner Pearson made it 6-3 with a short-handed goal with 2:02 remaining.

Nashville dropped its sixth consecutive game. Ryan Johansen, Calle Jarnkrok and Matt Duchene scored for the Predators, and Pekka Rinne made 12 saves on 17 shots before he was replaced by Juuse Saros.

STARS 5, JETS 3

DALLAS (AP) - Jamie Benn scored with 4:21 left, and the rolling Stars got the win after they blew a three-goal lead.

Mattias Janmark returned from injury to score the first of three Dallas goals in the second period, all assisted by Corey Perry.

Patrik Laine got his 17th goal in 15 games against Dallas, and Luca Sbisa tied it with 4:46 left in the third.

Benn scored 25 seconds later, skating across the slot and slipping a shot into the right side of the net. Tyler Seguin added an empty-netter with 35 seconds to play.

The Stars won their fifth straight to go to 12-1-1 in the last 14 games. The Jets had won five of six.

BRUINS 3, SABRES 2

BOSTON (AP) - David Pastrnak got his NHL-leading 20th goal, helping Boston to the victory.

Brad Marchand scored twice for the Bruins, who won for the third time in four games (3-0-1) following a four-game skid. Tuukka Rask stopped 35 shots.

Buffalo has dropped nine of 10 (1-7-2) after winning nine of its first 12 games. Rasmus Ristolainen and Brandon Montour scored for the Sabres, and Linus Ullmark had 24 saves.

Bruins star center Patrice Bergeron had an assist in his return after missing two games with a lower-body injury.

WILD 3, AVALANCHE 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Jason Zucker scored midway through the third period, and the Wild won consecutive games for the second time this season.

Mats Zuccarello and Jordan Greenway also scored for Minnesota. Alex Stalock made 25 saves and Ryan Suter added two assists as the Wild improved to 5-0-2 in their last seven home games.

Cale Makar scored two goals for the Avalanche. Andre Burakovsky had two assists, and Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves.

BLUES 5, FLAMES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis goaltender Jordan Binnington stopped 40 shots for his sixth career shutout, and Oskar Sundqvist scored twice.

Zach Sanford had a goal and three assists, helping the Blues improve to 9-1-2 in their last 12 games. David Perron and Vince Dunn also scored, and Robert Thomas had three assists.

David Rittich finished with 26 saves for Calgary, which has lost six in a row while being outscored 23-5.

LIGHTNING 4, BLACKHAWKS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Cirelli and Brayden Point scored 2:39 apart midway through the third period, and Tampa Bay earned its eighth consecutive victory against Chicago.

Mikhail Sergachev scored a power-play goal in the first period, and Cedric Paquette added an empty-netter.

The Lightning played without NHL MVP Nikita Kucherov, who is day to day after suffering an upper-body injury in the second period of Tuesday's 3-1 loss at St. Louis.

Steven Stamkos, who leads the Lightning with seven goals and 20 points, was held out of the second and third periods but was on the bench. He played 5:17 over nine shifts in the first.

Brent Seabrook and Dylan Strome scored for Chicago, and Corey Crawford made 31 stops.

BLUE JACKETS 5, RED WINGS 4

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Oliver Bjorkstrand, Boone Jenner and Eric Robinson scored in the third period, powering Columbus to its third straight win.

Jenner beat Jimmy Howard with a sharp-angle shot 8:43 into the third, 63 seconds after Bjorkstrand's tying power-play goal. Robinson made it 5-3 before Detroit's Tyler Bertuzzi scored with 3:14 left.

Alexandre Texier and Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets. Joonas Korpisalo made 22 saves.

Bertuzzi had two goals for Detroit, which has lost four straight. Filip Hronek and Luke Glendening also scored, and Howard made 32 saves.

13) Texans 20, Colts 17— Houston takes over first place in AFC South; they outgained the Colts by 100 yards (396-296). Indy threw ball for only 121 yards, even though Houston’s secondary is banged-up. Colts converted 9-15 3rd down plays, but fall to 6-5.

12) Disappointing but hardly surprising that major league baseball may want to implement a plan to shrink minor league baseball, by as many as 100 teams.

MLB enjoys an exemption from federal antitrust law that has lasted since the Supreme Court’s decision in the 1922 case Federal Baseball Club v. National League; that exemption could be used as leverage by Congress against shrinking the minor leagues.

Minor league baseball is affordable fun in lot of smaller towns around the country, and also provides a decent amount of jobs; would be sad if the greed of major league owners eliminated those jobs, and eliminated fun for lot of people in smaller towns.

11) Speaking of the minor leagues, the Class A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will be giving away a Cody Bellinger/Mike Trout “double MVP bobblehead” at a 2020 home game this summer; the Quakes are only team both Bellinger/Trout have played for.

10) Chicago White Sox signed C Yasmani Grandal to a 4-year, $73M contract.

1) RIP Fred Cox, 80, the Vikings’ all-time leading scorer and the inventor of the Nerf football. Cox finished his career with 1,365 points and led the Vikings in scoring 11 years in a row.

Cox became a chiropractor after his kicking days were done.

Penguins beat Devils 4-1 with 3rd-period burst

PITTSBURGH (AP) Jared McCann and John Marino scored 25 seconds apart in the third period to boost the Pittsburgh Penguins past the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Friday night.

Jake Guentzel had his team-leading 11th goal for Pittsburgh and Dominik Kahun added his sixth of the season to help the Penguins snap a four-game winless streak at home against New Jersey.

Tristan Jarry trimmed his goals-against average to 1.81 by stopping 36 shots, weathering an early second-period surge from the Devils, then coasting after Guentzel's pretty backhander just past the midway point gave the Penguins the momentum they would need.

Taylor Hall scored his third of the season for the Devils. Mackenzie Blackwood made 30 saves before being pulled in favor of Louis Domingue early in the third period after giving up goals on back to back shots by McCann and Marino.

SENATORS 4, RANGERS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist, Anders Nilsson stopped 30 shots and Ottawa beat New York for its third straight victory

Logan Brown, Tyler Ennis and Anthony Duclair also scored for the Senators.

Jacob Trouba scored for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves.

13) Xavier 75, UConn 74 2OT— Best college hoop game of the young season; six guys fouled out, three for both teams, who will be Big East rivals starting next season.

Xavier won despite going 16-26 on foul line; UConn was 25-27.

Musketeers will play Florida in the finals of the Charleston Classic Sunday night.

12) Duke 81, Georgetown 73— It is usually pretty fun to watch a coach go against Duke for the first time, how he handles getting screwed over in key situations. Patrick Ewing was a great player, but he is a young coach, and he didn’t enjoy this game very much.

Duke was 21-29 on the foul line, Georgetown 11-18. Go figure.

11) Temple 70, USC 61— Nice win for the AAC, and Temple’s rookie coach Aaron McKie.

10) Clippers 122, Rockets 119— Wouldn’t mind if these teams hooked up for a best-of-7 playoff series next spring. Lou Williams scored 26 points in the 2nd half, after not scoring in the first.

9) Myrtle Beach tournament:
— Villanova beat Mississippi State 83-76. High level game.
— Baylor beat Coastal Carolina 77-65; Coastal’s best guard hurt his knee in this game.

Villanova-Baylor is an interesting game Sunday, in the tournament final.

8) Utah State 80, LSU 78— Aggies were down 19 with 16:32 left; big win for the Mountain West Conference, which could use some quality wins.

7) NFL stuff:
— Bears’ QB Mitchell Trubisky will start Sunday.
— Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford (back) will miss his 3rd straight game.

6) Seattle Mariners agreed to a six-year, $24M contract with first baseman/prospect Evan White, who spent last season with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers, where he hit 18 HRs with 55 RBI in 92 games last year.

White is the first player ever at the AA level to get a long-term extension.

5) White Sox gave 1B/DH Jose Abreu a 3-year, $50M contract extension; somehow Abreu will make less money than C Yasmani Grandal, who signed with the Pale Hose this week, getting $73M for four years.

4) Missouri State 71, St Joe’s 69— Nice win for the Bears, who’ve used transfers to elevate their talent level; Lamont West played 110 games for West Virginia. Missouri State figures to contend in the Missouri Valley Conference this winter.
