      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

        — If you bet $100 on the Orioles in their first four games, you’d already be up $635.

        — Tampa Bay (4-1) leads the Orioles (3-1) by a half-game atop the AL East.

        — South Florida 63, DePaul 61— Bulls lead best-of-3 series, 1-0.

        — Of the 17 NFL referees in 2014, only six of them still work in the NFL.

        — Knicks 113, Bulls 105— Knicks cover as home favorite for 1st time since Nov. 7.

        — Wonder how much it costs to open/close the roof at Marlins’ Park?

        **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) Being involved in fantasy baseball and handicapping baseball teaches you patience; it is a very long season. There is a tendency to overreact to stuff that happens in the first week of the season, but as the cliche goes, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

        12) Go through this every year; baseball players get hurt.
        — Giancarlo Stanton (biceps strain) goes on the IL.
        — 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum tear in shoulder) also went on the IL.
        — Rays put 3B Joey Wendle (hamstring) on IL.
        — Toronto put P Clayton Richard (knee) on IL.

        11) Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 (11)— Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, bullpen blew a 4-0 lead. Archer threw 99 pitches in those five innings. Pirates wound up using eight relievers over the last six innings.

        10) Orioles 6, Blue Jays 5— David Hess threw 6.1 hitless innings (82 pitches), then was taken out of the game. Toronto quickly scored two runs; Orioles hung on for dear life.

        9) Braves 8, Cubs 0— Chicago made five errors in first five innings of this game; they’ve lost the last three days, giving up 26 runs. Rough start to the season.

        8) Mets 7, Marlins 3— Pete Alonso hit his first major league homer, a 440-foot blast, in front of 6,489 fans, most of whom were rooting for the visitors from New York.

        7) Belmont basketball coach Rick Byrd is retiring after coaching the Bruins for 33 years. Byrd won 805 games and made NCAA tournament eight times.

Belmont led the country in 2-point FG% in five of the last seven seasons.

        6) If you bet on AAF games, some info thru eight weeks:
        — Favorites are 22-10 SU, 16-16 vs spread
        — Home teams are 18-14 SU, 16-16 vs spread.
        — Under is 18-13-1.

        5) Red Sox signed SS Xander Bogaerts to a 7-year, $132M contract extension.

        4) There is a new minor league team this year, the Amarillo Sod Poodles, AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Minor league nicknames are getting weirder and weirder.

        3) Phillies had four sellouts all of last year; after three home games this season, they’ve already had three sellouts. Curious to see what kind of reaction Bryce Harper gets in Washington when the Phillies play there tonight.

        2) Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper has laid off one-third of its staff. 20 years ago, the paper had 340 journalists; now it’s down to 33.

        1. Normal field for a PGA Tour event is 144 golfers, but The Masters has a different set of requirements. Right now, only 86 players have qualified for next week’s tournament, which would be the smallest field at Augusta since 1997.

        • What goes up must come down in the Windy City, and this week's NHL odds and best bets
          Monty Andrews

We're into the final week of the NHL's regular season, and there's still plenty to be decided from a playoff seeding standpoint – and that means meaningful games right up to an action-packed 15-game schedule to close things out Saturday night.

Early-week action includes the Carolina Hurricanes hoping to continue what has been a reverse home-road trend as they travel to Toronto.

Here are the top matchups, NHL betting trends and tips to monitor as we hit the home stretch:

          Hurricane Warning

The Toronto Maple Leafs are all but assured of a third-place finish in the Atlantic Division, and a first-round encounter with the rival Boston Bruins. That development could mean great things for the Carolina Hurricanes, who visit Scotiabank Arena for a Tuesday night tilt.

With the Maple Leafs likely to give some of their top players a bit of a breather over their final three games of the regular season, the Hurricanes - who have a one-point lead over Montreal for the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot – are in prime position to extend a trend that has seen the road team win eight of the last 11 head-to-head meetings.

          All Good Things

We sincerely hope you hopped off the Chicago Blackhawks’ Over train before it careened into the side of a mountain, figuratively speaking. The Blackhawks have gone from one of the greatest two-month Over stretches in the history of professional sports to one of the hottest under options in the NHL as they prepare to host the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.

The Blackhawks were 20-1 O/U during a 21-game stretch earlier in the season but have slipped below the total in seven of their previous eight games and played to a 1-0 win the last time they faced St. Louis back in November.

Goalie Profile: Ben Bishop, Dallas Stars

It might be disingenuous to suggest that Bishop's health will ultimately decide whether the Stars reach the postseason, but it might also be true. Bishop is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury that kept him out of Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks and has him listed as questionable for Tuesday's encounter with the Philadelphia Flyers. Bishop has been one of the best netminders in the league this season, going 26-15-2 with a 2.03 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage while allowing just seven goals in his previous nine appearances.

Injury Update: D Zach Werenski, Columbus Blue Jackets

It looked as if the Blue Jackets' push for a playoff berth had hit a road block when Werenski went through the concussion protocol after being elbowed in the head during Columbus' 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night. But Werenski returned to action not long after the hit and finished out the game. Barring any setbacks, he should be able to suit up for Tuesday's critical matchup with the Boston Bruins. Werenski ranks second on the team among defensemen with 44 points and was on the ice for all four Blue Jackets goals in that shutout victory over the Sabres.

          Hat Trick Trends

          • After a long stretch of Under success, the Overs have won the day – at least, over the previous half-week. Overs nearly matched Unders for the previous seven-day period (48.1 percent success rate) after languishing for the majority of March. The Under has connected 58.7 percent of the time over the last 30 days, and at 51.7 percent for the season.

          • Jake Brenk is the undisputed king of the road when it comes to NHL betting lines. The veteran official has produced a whopping 21.12 units for the road team in the games he has worked this season, with road opponents going an incredible 47-22 ATS. Home teams are being outscored by an average of 0.42 goals in Brenk's assignments this season.

          • The Tampa Bay Lightning have all but locked up just about every team-related regular-season honor this season, including the mantel of the top-earning team in the NHL. The Lightning are at +16.92 units for the season, an incredible number considering they have been favored in the majority of their games. The New York Islanders are a solid runner-up at +11.37 units.

                  • Stars clinch playoff spot; Canes get big win
                    April 3, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) The Dallas Stars clinched their first trip to the playoffs in three years Tuesday night, getting two goals and two assists from Alexander Radulov in a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

The Stars were just a point shy of the postseason and could have made it with an Arizona loss in a later game.

Instead, they left little doubt with four goals in the final 24 minutes, including a pair 10 seconds apart, for just their third Western Conference playoff berth in 11 seasons.

Jason Dickinson, Esa Lindell, Tyler Pitlick and Blake Comeau also scored for the Stars, who hold the first wild-card spot with 91 points and are unlikely to get into the top three in the Central Division. Dallas last made the playoffs in 2016, losing a Game 7 to St. Louis in the second round.

                    HURRICANES 4, MAPLE LEAFS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Williams and Dougie Hamilton each banked in goals from behind Toronto's net as Carolina picked up a big two points in the Eastern Conference playoff race with a victory over the listless Maple Leafs.

Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes, while Hamilton added an empty-netter.

Petr Mrazek stopped 23 shots for Carolina, which came in having lost three of its past four in regulation as the franchise looks to make the postseason for the first time since 2009 - currently the NHL's longest streak of playoff futility.

John Tavares scored his 47th goal of the season for Toronto. Garret Sparks made 32 saves.

The Leafs clinched a playoff spot for a third consecutive spring with Monday's 2-1 road victory over the New York Islanders to set up a second consecutive first-round matchup with the Boston Bruins.

Toronto entered Tuesday's games four points back of Boston for second in the Atlantic Division, and home ice in the opening round, but will now start on the road after the Bruins defeated the Blue Jackets 6-2 in Columbus.

The Hurricanes are in the first-wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 95 points. Columbus and Montreal each have 94 points, but the Blue Jackets have second wild-card spot because of a tiebreaker.

                    BRUINS 6, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jake DeBrusk and the Boston Bruins are looking to build some momentum heading into the playoffs.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are just trying to get into the postseason right now.

Boston beat Columbus, ruining the Blue Jackets' opportunity to clinch a wild card in their last game at home. Instead the race will extend into the last two games of the season.

The Hurricanes are on top of the wild-card standings with 95 points. Columbus and Montreal each had 94, and the Blue Jackets hold the tiebreaker over the Canadiens.

DeBrusk had two goals and an assist and Tuukka Rask made 32 saves to help the Bruins stop a two-game slide. Brad Marchand and Karson Kuhlman each had a goal and an assist, and Marcus Johansson and David Pastrnak also scored.

Oliver Bjorkstrand extended the longest active goal streak in the NHL to six games with a third-period tally for Columbus, which had won five in a row. Matt Duchene also scored.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 19 stops, but allowed four goals before being relieved by Joonas Korpisalo late in the second period.

                    CANADIENS 4, LIGHTNING 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Artturi Lehkonen and Max Domi scored in the third period to lead Montreal win over NHL-leading Tampa Bay, keeping the Canadiens within reach for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Montreal and Columbus both have 94 points and two games left in the regular season. But the Blue Jackets currently own the tiebreaker.

Nate Thompson and Joel Armia also scored for the Canadiens, who improved to 6-1-1 in their past eight games. Carey Price stopped 22 shots for his 35th win of the season.

Steven Stamkos and Cedric Paquette scored for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Lightning, who were playing their third game in four nights.

                    AVALANCHE 6, OILERS 2

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon and Tyson Barrie scored a minute apart to ignite a four-goal second period as playoff-chasing Colorado rallied for a win over Edmonton.

Down 2-0 after the opening period to an Edmonton team already eliminated from postseason contention, the Avalanche surged in the second. MacKinnon started the scoring spree with his 40th goal of the season, while Barrie, Alexander Kerfoot and Colin Wilson joined in. All four goals were scored in a 7:08 span.

Kerfoot and Sven Andrighetto added insurance goals in the third.

                    WILD 5, JETS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota raced off to a big lead against Winnipeg, and then started watching the scoreboard to see if its faint playoff hopes would survive another night.

The Wild did their part, but their six-year playoff streak came to an end.

Zach Parise scored twice in his return from injury, Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves and the Wild rolled against the Jets.

Victor Rask, Joel Eriksson Ek and Marcus Foligno also scored for Minnesota, which entered play five points behind Colorado for eighth in the Western Conference. The Avalanche trailed 2-0 at home against Edmonton before rallying for a 6-2 win that knocked the Wild out of the playoff contention.

Jacob Trouba scored a short-handed goal for Winnipeg, but goaltender Eric Comrie allowed three first-period goals in his first start of the season and fifth of his career. Comrie finished with 23 saves.

The Jets have lost four of five to slip into a tie with Nashville for the lead in the Central Division. The Predators won 3-2 in Buffalo on Tuesday night. Winnipeg and Nashville each have two games remaining.

                    PREDATORS 3, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Ryan Johansen scored 6:32 into the third period, and the Predators stayed in the hunt for the Central Division title.

P.K. Subban had a goal and an assist and Craig Smith also scored as Nashville moved two points ahead of idle St. Louis for second place in the division. The Predators began the day two points behind Central-leading Winnipeg.

Pekka Rinne stopped 26 shots in a game Nashville never trailed.

Jeff Skinner got his career-best 38th goal and Kyle Okposo also scored for Buffalo, which dropped to 0-7-1 in its past eight. Carter Hutton finished with 32 saves.

                    RED WINGS 4, PENGUINS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Pittsburgh missed out on a chance to clinch a playoff spot when Tyler Bertuzzi led Detroit over the Penguins.

Bertuzzi had two goals and an assist as the Red Wings earned their sixth consecutive win. He became the first player in franchise history with four consecutive three-point games. He has five goals and eight assists during a five-game point streak.

Detroit also got two goals from Anthony Mantha, who has five goals and seven assists during a six-game point streak. Dylan Larkin had three assists, and Jimmy Howard made 38 saves.

Phil Kessel scored for Pittsburgh, and Matt Murray stopped 22 shots.

                    CANUCKS 4, SHARKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Tanner Pearson scored twice, leading Vancouver to a comeback win over San Jose.

Markus Granlund and Troy Stecher also scored for the Canucks, while Bo Horvat and Loui Eriksson each had a pair of assists.

Kevin Labanc and Joe Pavelski scored for the Sharks.

Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 33 of 35 shots and Martin Jones had 19 saves for San Jose.

The loss added to a tough stretch for the Sharks, who are 1-8-1 in their past 10 games and haven't had a regulation win since March 12.

                    KINGS 3, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jack Campbell made 49 saves, Trevor Lewis scored 3:29 into the third period, and Los Angeles hurt Arizona's playoff chances with a victory over the Coyotes.

Tyler Clifford had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles, which had dropped three of four. Drew Doughty added an empty-netter with 44.4 seconds left.

Arizona fell four points behind Colorado for the second wild card in the Western Conference. The Coyotes need to win their final two games and have Colorado lose its last two in order to have a chance to get in.

Brad Richardson scored for Arizona, and Darcy Kuemper made 16 saves before he was accidentally struck in the face when Lewis raised his stick after his backhand goal.

Kuemper, who has played a key role in Arizona's push for a wild card, was replaced by Calvin Pickard.

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                        13) After eight weeks of games, the AAF has suspended operations, which is sad for the people who worked there. Players only got paid for the first seven weeks of the season.

Takes lots of money to fund a start-up league like this; there are rumors that the guy from the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes who invested in the AAF only wanted access to the technology for the league’s betting app, and once he had that, he pulled the plug on spending more money. Supposedly, he dropped $70M on this fiasco. Must be a good betting app.

Not sure what this means, if anything, for the XFL, which starts up next spring.

                        12) So it is April 2 and here in upstate New York, spring is slowly emerging. It was 46 degrees when I left my house today; in the bank, a guy in line behind me was wearing shorts. Oy.

                        11) Ronald Acuña signed a $100M extension with the Braves that keeps his contract under team control until 2028. Team-friendly deal.

                        10) Seattle TV analyst Mike Blowers told an interesting story Monday night:

Blowers was playing for the Mariners in the mid-90’s; Lou Piniella (a noted hothead) was the manager. Blowers made two errors in the 9th inning that cost Seattle the last game of a road trip. Blowers: “Lou was sitting towards the front of the plane; he wasn’t real happy with me.”

Next game for Seattle is a home game; Blowers comes to the plate for the first time, and is booed when his name is announced. He hits a grand slam.

Second time up, Blowers is still booed a little; he hits a 3-run homer.

Third time up, Blowers gets a standing ovation.

Lessons: Baseball is a tough game; people are fickle.

                        9) Washington Wizards fired team president Ernie Grunfeld after 16 seasons; Wizards are having their first losing season in six years. Washington hasn’t been to a conference final since 1979, so the franchise’s issues go way back before Grunfeld was around.

                        8) Last Thursday, Michael Reed started in RF on Opening Day for the Giants; he went 0-8 with six strikeouts in four games and Tuesday, he was designated for assignment. Produce or else.

                        7) Nationals’ SS Trea Turner tried to bunt last night; the ball hit his finger and he left the game, with what looked a lot like a broken finger.

                        6) Former tennis star Billie Jean King is a minority owner of the LA Dodgers.

                        5) Few years ago, I’m driving thru New Jersey and stop for gas. I get out of the car and start pumping the gas, and this little Asian guy comes running out of the store, yelling at me, waving his arms. Apparently it is illegal in New Jersey to pump your own gas. Who knew?

Funny thing, they pump it for you but the gas is still cheaper than it is in New York.

                        4) From Christopher Kamka: Last time Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks all won on the same day was April 21, 2012, the day Philip Humber threw a perfect game for the White Sox.

                        3) Puerto Rico has a larger population than 21 of the 50 states.

                        2) Lipscomb 71, Wichita State 64— Shockers led by 11 in second half, but veteran Lipscomb team rallied back, scored last 14 points of the game and will play for the NIT title Thursday night.

                        1) Texas 58, TCU 44— If you had Texas-Lipscomb in your NIT brackets, you’re about to get paid. TCU beat the Longhorns twice during the regular season, but came up empty here.

                              • Blackhawks slip past Blues in shootout
                                April 3, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Jonathan Toews scored the lone goal in the shootout after connecting for his career-high 35th in regulation, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist to set a career high for points at 107. Cam Ward stopped 37 shots through overtime and all three Blues shooters in the tiebreaker.

Tyler Bozak stuffed in a rebound with 38.9 seconds left to tie the game at 3 and send it to overtime as St. Louis rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period.

Ward stopped Bozak's point-blank first deflection of Patrick Maroon's pass from left wing, but Bozak jammed in a second attempt. The goal withstood a video review for goaltender interference.

Vladimir Tarasenko and David Perron also scored for St. Louis, which improved to 95 points, but missed an opportunity to climb into a tie for first place in the Central Division with idle Winnipeg and Nashville, both of which have 96. The three teams have all clinched playoff spots and each has two games remaining.

Artem Anisimov also connected for Chicago.

                                DUCKS 3, FLAMES 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Rookies Sam Steel and Max Jones scored first-period goals and Anaheim continued its strong finish to a lost season with a victory over Calgary.

Captain Ryan Getzlaf also scored and Ryan Miller made 25 saves in his first victory since March 5 for the Ducks, who responded to a 6-1 loss to first-place Calgary last week with their 10th win in 16 games overall. Anaheim's streak of six straight playoff appearances will end next week thanks to its disastrous 5-21-4 midseason slump.

Derek Ryan scored and David Rittich stopped 29 shots for the Pacific Division champion Flames, who will start the postseason next week as the top seed in the Western Conference. With nothing to gain from a win, the Flames rested several healthy regulars, including 82-point scorer Sean Monahan and 78-point scorer Elias Lindholm.

Johnny Gaudreau got his 98th point with an assist on Ryan's first-period goal, extending his scoring streak to five games and getting close to his first 100-point season.

The Flames' three-game winning streak ended, and they lost at Honda Center for the 32nd time in their past 33 games in Orange County. Calgary had lost 29 straight games in Anaheim since 2006 before a win early last season.

The Flames have won their division for the first time since 2006, but they've won just one playoff series since 2004. The Ducks' run of five straight Pacific titles ended last season, and they're missing the playoffs this spring for only the third time since 2004.

                                SENATORS 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist and Ottawa earned a win against New York.

Bobby Ryan, Zack Smith and Brian Gibbons also scored while Anders Nilsson made 27 saves as the league-worst Senators picked up their second win in the past three games. Colin White also had two assists.

Lias Andersson scored for New York and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 of 31 shots as the Rangers fell for the second straight game.

Ottawa benefited from superior play on special teams, with two power-play goals a short-handed tally.

Ryan opened the scoring when he sent a wrist shot past the glove of Lundqvist at 12:14 of the first period. Chris Tierney delivered the puck from below the goal line to set up Ryan for the power-play goal. Tkachuk also assisted on the play.
