Caps nip 'Canes 3-2 to clinch playoff spot

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Nic Dowd scored on a deflection with 4:56 remaining and the Washington Capitals clinched a playoff berth with a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.

Brett Connolly and Jakub Vrana also scored and Braden Holtby made 24 saves to help the defending Stanley Cup champions reach the 100-point mark for the fifth straight season and wrap up their 11th spot in the playoffs in 12 years. Alex Ovechkin - with 49 goals - was held off the score sheet and missed a long shot toward an empty net with about 45 seconds remaining.

Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter scored for the Hurricanes. They lost consecutive games in regulation for the first time since mid-January and missed out on an important two points that would have helped their chase for their first playoff berth in a decade.

ISLANDERS 5, JETS 4

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Casey Cizikas and Jordan Eberle scored 33 seconds apart in the final two minutes to lift New York past Winnipeg.

Cizikas took advantage when Winnipeg couldn't clear the puck and scored with 1:46 to go to make it 4-4. Eberle added his second goal of the game with 1:13 left when he got into the crease and beat Connor Hellebuyck.

Eberle also picked up an assist and Ryan Pulock had three of his own. Mathew Barzal ended a 19-game goal drought with his 11th of the season, and Anders Lee scored his 28th for New York. The Islanders moved two points ahead of Pittsburgh and into second place in the Metropolitan Division.

Adam Lowry scored twice and added an assist, while Brandon Tanev had a goal and a pair of assists for Winnipeg. Mark Scheifele scored his 36th goal,

STARS 3, OILERS 2, SO

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Jamie Benn scored the shootout winner in Dallas' victory over Edmonton.

Alexander Radulov and Miro Heiskanen scored in regulation for the surging Stars. They won their third straight game to tighten their hold on the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers.

BLUE JACKETS 6, CANADIENS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice, Sergei Bobrovsky had 28 saves and Columbus beat Montreal to move into an Eastern Division wild-card spot.

The Blue Jackets tied Montreal for the second wild card and they hold the tiebreaker with five games remaining. Carolina is one point ahead in the first slot.

David Savard, Artemi Panarin, Riley Nash and Brandon Dubinsky also scored for Columbus. Brett Kulak had a goal and an assist, and Jeff Petry also scored for Montreal.

RED WINGS 5, SABRES 4, OT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Tyler Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift Detroit over Buffalo.

Dylan Larkin also had two goals for Detroit, Filip Hronek added a goal, and Jimmy Howard made 35 saves.

Jack Eichel, Kyle Okposo, Marco Scandella and Casey Mittelstadt scored for Buffalo. The Sabres have lost 12 of their last 13 games.

PANTHERS 5, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice and Florida beat Ottawa to snap a three-game losing streak.

Troy Brouwer, Dryden Hunt and Evgenii Dadonov also scored for Florida. Roberto Luongo made 28 saves. Colin White and Brady Tkachuk scored for Ottawa.

13) Purdue 99, Tennessee 94 OT— Vols trailed by 12 at the half; they were 4-13 on the foul line in the first half, 7-9 in the second, 3-6 in OT. Purdue was 16-33 on the foul line.

Second half of this game was outstanding, exciting basketball. Ryan Cline made 7-10 shots behind the arc; Tennessee was 12-24 on the arc, but made only one of last five. Wild game.

2011 Florida Gators were last team to play consecutive OT games in NCAA’s; Gators beat BYU in the Sweet 16, then lost to Butler in the Elite 8. Same results for Tennessee here.

12) Virginia 53, Oregon 49— Teams combined to go 18-58 on arc; Virginia led 30-22 at the half, but were down 3 with 5:30 left. Ducks scored only four points in last 5:44 of this game.

Virginia’s Kyle Guy was shooting 43.9% on arc coming into this game, but he was 2-11 here, and is now 5 for his last 31 over the last four games. They’ll need more from him Saturday.

11) Gonzaga 72, Florida State 58— Seminoles went 3-20 on the arc, were out-rebounded 45-36 and went down fairly meekly.

10) Texas Tech 63, Michigan 44— Not even close; Red Raiders thrashed Michigan here, holding Wolverines to 1-19 shooting on arc (starters were 0-14). Tech won 12 of its last 13 games; their next game is Saturday against Gonzaga.

9) Brewers 5, Cardinals 4— Lorenzo Cain ended the game by robbing Jose Martinez of a game-tying home run. Excellent catch.

2) Mariners 12, Red Sox 4— Seattle treated Chris Sale like a piñata, getting seven runs in three innings against him. Mariners won two games in Japan, are off to a 3-0 start.

Edgar Martinez was in the ESPN booth for part of this game and Alex Rodriguez did a great job of picking his brain about hitting-related things. Obviously they played together for several years and A-Rod has a lot of respect for a guy who was a seriously tremendous hitter.

1) Reds 5, Pirates 3— Derek Dietrich hit a pinch-hit, 3-run homer in the 7th inning, as Cincinnati came from behind and won its opener.

Draisaitl takes aim at 50-goal mark and this weekend's NHL odds and best bets

We have ourselves a goal-scoring race – and the unlikely challenger could find himself drawing even with the perennial superstar by the time the weekend is out. Leon Draisaitl's quest for 50 goals highlights a stuffed schedule of NHL action, which includes the Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Flames riding one of the hottest head-to-head Under trends in the league and the Philadelphia Flyers looking to extend their recent dominance over the once-mighty New York Rangers. Here are the top matchups and trends to monitor as the regular season draws to a close.

Red-Hot Under Play

The Ducks and Flames are 125 points apart in the standings – okay, there's only a 27-point gap, but it certainly feels a lot bigger – but they do share a common interest in low-scoring games, at least when they face off against one another. The Ducks visit Calgary on Friday night, and it's a bit surprising that this one opened with a total of 6; that could change by game-time, given that the teams have combined to score five or fewer goals in seven consecutive meetings. Anaheim ranks last in the league at 2.33 goals per game, while Calgary has scored just one goal over its past two outings.

Neon Leon

Alex Ovechkin is still the odds-on favorite to win his eighth career Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL's top goal scorer – but he's facing some stiff competition with just over a week remaining in the regular-season schedule. Edmonton Oilers sniper Leon Draisaitl finds himself just two goals back of Ovechkin heading into Saturday's encounter with the visiting Ducks. And this matchup could lead to a big game from Draisaitl, who has 11 goals in 19 career games against the Ducks – the most he has scored against any opponent. Draisaitl enters the weekend just three goals shy of the 50 mark.

Goals are Coming

You might look at Saturday's showdown between the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning and think to yourself, "Hey, I bet these teams score plenty against one another." And you'd be right – the Eastern Conference division leaders come into their latest meeting having combined for six or more goals in five of their previous six head-to-head encounters, including a pair of nine-goal results so far this season. The Lightning are averaging an incredible 4.42 goals in March and are at a league-best 3.90 for the season, while Washington ranks ninth for the month (3.29) and fifth on the season (3.37).

Can Philly Make it Seven?

No other Metropolitan Division matchup has been as one-sided in recent years as the series between the Flyers and Rangers, which resumes Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers come in having won each of their last six games against the Rangers, with three of the past four victories coming by shutout. In fact, Philadelphia has been competely dominant vs. the Broadway Blueshirts, outscoring them by a 24-9 margin over the length of the winning streak. The Flyers could use a strong home showing, as they enter Friday with -5.77 units won in their own arena so far this season.

Goalie Profile: Philipp Grubauer, Colorado Avalanche

If you've been betting on Grubauer, you have to be pleased with the outcome so far this month. The journeyman goalie has been red-hot in March, posting a 6-2-1 record with a 1.43 goals-against average (the lowest of any netminder with 10+ appearances), a .955 save percentage and a pair of shutouts. Even more impressively, three of those victories have come with Colorado as the underdog, making for an even better payout. Grubauer has allowed more than three goals in just one of his previous 12 games, and that came last time out when he surrendered three goals in a win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

Injury Update: G Ben Bishop, Dallas Stars

The Stars have done well to stay alive in the Western Conference wild-card race, but they might have to continue their quest without one of the top netminders in the league. Bishop is nursing a lower-body injury suffered in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames, and was forced to miss Dallas' 3-2 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers the following night. He's considered day-to-day as the Stars continue their Western Canada trek with a Saturday night date with the Canucks in Vancouver. Bishop has been the catalyst for Dallas' playoff push with a 26-15-2 record, a 2.03 GAA and a .933 SV%.

Hat Trick Trends

A shift in oddsmakers' approach to totals has modestly stemmed the Under tide, with the past seven days producing 26 Under results compared to 23 overs – good for a 53.1-percent success rate that is considerably lower than recent seven-day spans. The Under is still the far superior play over the past 30 days, cashing in

If you like offense and Ghislain Hebert is officiating your local team, you had better scoop up some tickets. Hebert has seen the highest average goals-per-game total of any referee that has worked at least 50 games so far this season, with teams combining for an incredible 6.59 goals in those outings. Chris Rooney is second on the list at 6.49 goals per game.

The top two teams in terms of betting value are virtually locked into their spots as the season reaches its conclusion. The Tampa Bay Lightning are putting the finishing touches on an incredible season, and are sitting at +16.92 units through 77 games. The New York Islanders are the only other team on pace to finish north of 10 units won, entering Friday at +11.37.

Rinne, Predators top Penguins 3-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pekka Rinne stopped 42 shots to lead the Nashville Predators to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

Rinne was 63 seconds from his fifth shutout of the season when Nick Bjugstad scored for Pittsburgh.

Viktor Arvidsson's 32nd goal of the season - a power-play goal - set a career high and also was the 100th of his NHL career. Craig Smith and P.K. Subban also scored for the Predators, who moved into a first-place tie in the Central Division. Nashville, which clinched its fifth straight playoff berth Monday, has won five of seven after losing four of its previous six.

Matt Murray made 23 saves for the Penguins, whose three-game winning streak ended.

RED WINGS 4, DEVILS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard combined for a shutout, Tyler Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists and the Red Wings topped the New Jersey Devils for their fourth straight win.

Bernier made 21 saves in the first two periods before leaving with an upper-body injury. Howard stopped seven shots in the third period to complete the Red Wings' sixth victory in their last seven games.

Dylan Larkin and Danny DeKeyser each had a goal and an assist, and Andreas Athanasiou also scored for Detroit.

AVALANCHE 3, COYOTES 2, SO

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon's shootout goal lifted Colorado over the Arizona Coyotes and the Avalanche tightened their grip on the second Western Conference wild-card berth.

MacKinnon and Derick Brassard also had power-play goals in regulation for Colorado, which extended its lead over Arizona to three points in the race for the wild-card berth. Both teams have four games remaining.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson had both goals for the Coyotes, including the tying goal with 51 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Avalanche also got 42 saves from Philipp Grubauer, who also stopped all three shots by Arizona in the shootout.

RANGERS 4, BLUES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Jimmy Vesey scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, helping the Rangers beat the St. Louis Blues.

Ryan Strome, Pavel Buchnevich and Chris Kreider also scored, and Alexandar Georgiev made 44 saves for the Rangers, who had lost two in a row.

Vladimir Tarasenko and David Perron scored for St. Louis, which clinched a playoff spot when Arizona lost at Colorado. Jordan Binnington stopped 20 shots in only his third regulation loss on the road this season.

FLAMES 6, DUCKS 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Sean Monahan scored twice to set a single-season career high with 33 goals and also added two assists, leading the Flames to the win.

Mark Giordano, James Neal, Derek Ryan and Garnet Hathaway also scored for Calgary, which extended its lead atop the Pacific Division and Western Conference to eight points over San Jose. The Flames are looking for their first division title since the 2005-06 season and first conference title since 1989-90. The Sharks have five games remaining, including a home date with Calgary on Sunday.

Andy Welinski scored his first NHL goal for Anaheim.

WILD 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Devan Dubnyk stopped 35 shots and the Minnesota Wild defeated the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Wild, who are four points back of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, improved to 5-0-1 all-time against Vegas, including a perfect 3-0-0 at T-Mobile Arena.

Minnesota opened the game with a 3-0 lead on goals by Greg Pateryn, Eric Staal and Kevin Fiala.

Despite the loss, the Golden Knights clinched their second consecutive playoff berth when Arizona lost in a shootout in Denver. Paul Stastny scored both of Vegas' goals, and Malcolm Subban made 30 saves.

13) Auburn 97, North Carolina 80— Didn’t see this coming. Since 1993, Tar Heels were 13-1 in this round; not sure if Nassir Little’s illness was a factor, but the whole team looked sick and kind of lackluster.

NCAA enforcement people must be thrilled; Auburn had one assistant coach indicted last year, another one has been suspended as part of the adidas payoff scandal. Now the Tigers are in the Elite 8 for only the second time (1986). Go figure.

Bad news for Auburn; they lost F Chuma Okeke with a knee injury that the Auburn people said was likely a serious one.

12) Duke 75, Virginia Tech 73— Understood that this is irrelevent, but Duke is 0-3 vs spread in this tournament, 3-12 vs spread in their last 15 games. Tre Jones was shooting 23.2% on the arc before this game; he went 5-7 Friday and saved the Blue Devils’ butts.

Buzz Williams is supposedly off to Texas A&M next season; if he doesn’t already have a deal with the Aggies, his price tag probably went up a little during this game.
