Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

      13) I’m not a New Jersey Giants’ fan, I’m a Ram fan who spends way too much time handicapping sports. Not really sure what the Giants are thinking when they trade Odell Beckham but keep their 38-year old QB. They also dumped Vernon/Collins, so their defense has been depleted.

Peter King wrote that the Giants “…..are an expansion team with a 38-year old QB.”

Better hit a home run with those two draft picks they got from Cleveland. Giants have three of the first 37 picks in the draft, so there is opportunity there.

In fairness to the Giants, the last two Decembers, Beckham played one game, and caught three passes for 35 yards in that game. I’m not saying what they did was wrong, I’m just saying that what they’re doing confuses me. Why not go young at quarterback, too?

This is the first time since 1984 the Giants have two 1st-round picks in a draft. That year, they took LB Carl Banks and OL William Roberts.

      12) Westgate SuperBook dropped Cleveland from 25-1 to 14-1 to win the Super Bowl; William Hill books lowered them from 25-1 to 18-1.

Giants went from 40-1 to 80-1 to win the Super Bowl, which seems a bit excessive. Maybe it is more accurate to say that 40-1 was too low to begin with.

      11) Le’Veon Bell gets $52.5M, four years from the Jets. I’m curious how many of these contracts are affecting the NFL’s primetime schedule for this coming season.

Terrell Suggs played 16 years for the Ravens but is now on Arizona; that would be an interesting Monday night game.

Do the Steelers play the Jets this year?

Earl Thomas signed with the Ravens Wednesday; another potential 2019 primetime matchup.

      10) No matter what, the NFL continues their amazing ability to stay in the headlines 12 months a year. After the NCAA’s, the NFL schedule will come out next month, then the draft is late next month. Always something going on.

      9) Iona has won the MAAC tournament four years in a row; here is how they did in the NCAA’s the last three years:
      — 2018, lost 89-67 to Duke (+20)
      — 2017, lost 93-77 to Oregon (+15.5)
      — 2016, lost 94-81 to Iowa State (+7.5)

Something tells me the Gaels might be heading to Dayton next week.

      8) Saint Mary’s 60, Gonzaga 47— After the brackets come out Sunday night, it’ll be fun to try and figure out which team got KO’d from the tournament because Saint Mary’s won this game. Gonzaga hadn’t lost a conference tournament game since 2012.

      7) William & Mary fired coach Tony Shaver Wednesday; the Tribe has never made the NCAA tournament, which is obviously a sticking point, but the last six years, W&M was 64-42 in CAA games, with all six seasons above .500 in conference play.

Last six years, Tribe was 6-6 in CAA tourney, losing in finals in both 2014, 2015- they lost to Delaware by a point in ’14. There is no guarantee the new coach will be a better coach than Shaver— JMU fired Matt Brady three years ago and is 19-35 in CAA games since then.

      6) Was odd seeing Magic Johnson at the OVC tournament, watching Ja Morant play; you don’t expect to see an NBA legend courtside when you’re watching a Belmont-Murray State game. Magic was at the ACC tournament in Charlotte Wednesday.

      5) NC State 59, Clemson 58— Tigers led by 18, but lost; they’re 18-13, and probably headed to the NIT. Here are some of the reasons they didn’t win 20 games:

      — Nov 26, lost 68-66 to Nebraska
      — Jan 26, lost 69-67 at NC State
      — Feb 13, lost 65-64 at Miami
      — Feb 16, lost 56-55 at Louisville
      — March 2, lost 81-79 to North Carolina
      — March 13, lost 59-58 to NC State

      4) Ted Valentine did the Clemson-NC State noon game in Charlotte; wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if he had showed up somewhere else on TV, reffing a night game. When was last time a ref worked two games in the same day? Has it ever happened at that level?

      3) Big Sky tournament: 3-point shooting decided the first two games:
      — Saacramento State 72, Northern Arizona 60— Hornets were 12-20 on the arc.
      — Southern Utah 94, Idaho State 80— Thunderbirds were 11-15 on the arc.

      2) West Virginia 72, Oklahoma 71— Kid on Oklahoma swished what looked like a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but his toes were on the line, so it was only a 2-point shot and the Sooners head to the bubble- their next four days will be agonizing, waiting to hear their fate Sunday.

      1) Cleveland Browns were going to sign WR Breshad Perriman, but when they traded for Beckham, that ship sailed, so Perriman signed a one-year, $4M deal with Tampa Bay instead.

        • In the Crease - Week 25

          Hurricane Warning

The Carolina Hurricanes are showing no signs of letting up, as they attempt to break the NHL's longest playoff drought dating back to the 2008-09 NHL season.Carolina has posted a 16-4-2 mark across the past 22 outings. They'll hit the road for a crucial battle against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night in Ohio's capital city. The Canes have posted victories in six of the past seven on the road, and they're 4-1 in their past five as an underdog while going 5-2 in the past seven against winning teams. They've also won 23 of the past 32 games overall.

As far as the Jackets are concerned, they're one of a handful of teams jockeying for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their best asset is their penalty kill unit, ranking second overall in the NHL, killing 84.78 percent of their penalties. However, they have struggled on the offensive side of things, which is why they went all-in at the trade deadline to acquire offensive talent. So far the new faces haven't made much of a difference, as they have alternated wins and losses over the past five.

          Looking Ahead

          Thursday, March 14

          Dallas at Minnesota:
The Stars have been on a roll in the Western Conference, as they lock horns with the Minnesota Wild in the Twin Cities. Goaltender Ben Bishop has been the reason for the hot streak, as he rolls into the game with three consecutive shutouts, just the third goaltender in franchise history to accomplish that feat. He needs to 15:07 of scoreless action on Thursday to set the franchise's all-time streak for a netminder. He has posted an impressive 1.73 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in eight career starts against the Wild, and he has won two of his three meetings with the Wild this season. On the flip side, Devan Dubnyk has managed an 8-9-3 mark in 21 career appearances vs. Dallas.

          Boston at Winnipeg:
The B's and Jets jook up at MTS Centre in Manitoba, and it could be a high-scoring affair. The Jets won in Boston by a 4-3 score on Jan. 29 in the first meeting between these teams, and the over is 4-2-1 in the past seven meetings, and two of the past three in Winnipeg. The Bruins lost their last trip to Winnipeg, but won the previous two. The B's have been slumping a bit, allowing 11 goals over the two outings after having their 19-game streak with at least one point snapped. The Jets have dropped three of the past four, and they have allowed 14 total goals over their past four outings.

          Florida at San Jose:
This series has been heavily in favor of the road team in recent seasons. Florida won 6-2 at home on Jan. 21 against San Jose, but that was the first win by a home team in this series over the past six meetings dating back to Nov. 5, 2015. The underdog has connected in each of the past four meetings in this series, too. Florida has won four of the past five at the Shark Tank, too.

          Friday, March 15

          N.Y. Rangers at Calgary:
The Rangers head into Calgary on Friday night with just one victory over the past nine outings, and they're 1-6 in the past seven on the road after their 4-1 loss in Vancouver on Wednesday evening. The Rangers are non-contenders and were major sellers at the deadline. The Flames are major contenders, and they piled up nine goals, including six third-period goals, in Tuesday's win over New Jersey. Calgary leads the NHL in third-period tallies. The 'over' is 3-0-1 in Calgary's past four at home, too. For the Flames, the over is also 7-1-1 in the past nine at home vs. Eastern Conference teams.

          New Jersey at Vancouver:
The Devils were roughed up for a season-high nine goals on Tuesday in Calgary, but they bounced back nicely with a 6-3 win in Edmonton on Wednesday night. They'll be looking to make it a season sweep against the Canucks, blanking Vancouver 4-0 back on New Year's Eve in the first meeting. The 'over' has cashed in six straight road games vs. Western Conference teams for the Devils.

          Saturday, March 16

          Columbus at Boston:
The B's and Jackets just met in C-Bus on Tuesday, with Columbus coming away with a 7-4 victory. Believe it or not that was the first meeting of the season between these two Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls, and they'll also meet again on April 2 in Ohio. The Jackets head into this one with a tough back-to-back situation. In the second end of a back-to-back Columbus is 5-6 this season. They also headed in Friday's game with Columbus on a 4-1 'under' run.

          Washington at Tampa Bay:
The defending Stanley Cup champions against the potential champs this season? The Lightning have the league's best record, so this is gonna be a war. It's hard to believe, but these teams have yet to face each other this season. This is the first of two meetings in the next five days, and they'll square off three times between now and March 30. The Lightning have won four in a row at home since a 4-2 setback to the Maple Leafs on Jan. 17. The Caps will be decisive underdogs in this one, and they're 2-1 (+190) in their past three as a 'dog.

          Nashville at San Jose:
This will be the third and final meeting between the Predators and Sharks, although there is a real good chance they'll meet in the postseason. San Jose has won each of the first two meetings by a 5-4 score, as the 'over' comfortably hit in both. Each of the four meetings in this series have cashed the 'over', too. The road team is 5-1 across the past six meetings in this series, too.

          Sunday, March 17

          Edmonton at Vegas:
These teams split a pair of meetings in Edmonton earlier this season, and this will be the first meeting at T-Mobile Arena. It's the sixth all-time meeting in the series since Vegas' inception, ans the Oilers have more than held their own with three wins in five tries. All three of their wins have been one-goal victories, while the two wins by Vegas are each by three goals apiece. The Golden Knights have hit the 'under' in four of their past six at home, and the under is 7-1-1 in their past nine at T-Mobile Arena vs. Western Conference foes.

                  • Stamkos ties team record, Lightning rally past Red Wings 5-4
                    March 15, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Steven Stamkos tied Vincent Lecavalier for Tampa Bay's career lead in goals, Nikita Kucherov scored twice in the third period and the Lightning rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Thursday night.

The Red Wings led 3-0 in the second when Stamkos scored on the power play to start Tampa Bay's comeback. His 383rd goal pulled him even with Lecavalier, and the NHL-leading Lightning weren't done. The league's highest-scoring team added four goals in the third, with Kucherov and Tyler Johnson scoring 26 seconds apart to give Tampa Bay the lead with 11:10 remaining. Kucherov made it 5-3 with 3:22 left.

Brayden Point also scored early in the third for the Lightning. Madison Bowey, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader and Michael Rasmussen scored for the Red Wings, who lost for the 12th time in 13 games. Tampa Bay tied its franchise record of 54 wins, set last season.

                    PENGUINS 5, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Phil Kessel had a goal and an assist, Sidney Crosby added two assists and Pittsburgh blanked Buffalo.

Nick Bjugstad and Jake Guentzel each had a goal and an assist for the surging Penguins, who have won six of seven and sit third in the Metropolitan Division. Brian Dumoulin and Patric Hornqvist also scored, and Casey DeSmith made 26 saves for his fourth career shutout.

Carter Hutton stopped 21 shots for the Sabres, who matched a franchise record with three consecutive shutout losses. It happened for the first time last season during a three-game stretch that concluded with a 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh.

                    STARS 4, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Radek Faksa, Roope Hintz and Joel L'Esperance scored in a span of 2:22 early in the second period, and Dallas hung on to beat Minnesota after goalie Ben Bishop got hurt.

Anton Khudobin stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced in relief of Bishop, who made seven saves and established a franchise record by stretching his scoreless streak to 240:53 before exiting with a lower-body injury.

Alexander Radulov added an empty-netter for the Stars, who have won six of their last seven games - five in regulation.

Jason Zucker had the only goal for the Wild, who took a big hit in the Western Conference wild-card race with their third consecutive loss. They're in ninth place with 74 points and 11 games to go, trailing Arizona by three points for the final spot.

Minnesota is 1-6-3 in its last 10 home games since Jan. 19.

The Stars, meanwhile, moved into a tie with St. Louis for third place in the Central Division with 79 points. They have 12 games remaining, as do the Blues.

                    ISLANDERS 2, CANADIENS 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anders Lee scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period and Thomas Greiss stopped 33 shots as New York beat Montreal.

Adam Pelech also scored in the second period to help the Islanders win for the fourth time in five games to remain two points behind first-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division.

Jordie Benn had the tying goal for Montreal late in the second, and Carey Price finished with 36 saves.

Lee converted on a 2-on-1 with Matthew Barzal for his team-leading 25th goal of the season with 2:57 remaining.

                    JETS 4, BRUINS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists to help Winnipeg hand Boston its third straight loss.

Blake Wheeler added a goal and an assist, and Jacob Trouba and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored for the Jets. Patrik Laine had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 36 shots as Winnipeg moved three points ahead of Nashville atop the Central Division.

Charlie McAvoy, Joakim Nordstrom and Charlie Coyle scored for Boston and David Krejci had two assists. Tuukka Rask finished with 20 saves.

Ehlers scored the eventual game-winner with just under 7 minutes left after Trouba put the Jets ahead 3-2 earlier in the third period. Coyle got Boston within one with 2:56 remaining, but the Bruins couldn't tie it up.

                    CAPITALS 5, FLYERS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brett Connolly had two goals and an assist to help Washington maintain its lead atop the Metropolitan Division.

Evgeny Kuznetsov added a goal and an assist, and Lars Eller and Tom Wilson also scored as the Capitals stayed two points ahead of the second-place New York Islanders in the division. Braden Holtby stopped 22 shots.

James van Riemsdyk and Scott Laughton scored for Philadelphia, and Carter Hart finished with 27 saves. The Flyers remained five points out of the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

                    SENATORS 2, BLUES 0

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Anders Nilsson stopped 34 shots for his second shutout to lead Ottawa.

Christian Wolanin and Chris Tierney scored to help the Senators snap a three-game losing streak. The shutout was Nilsson's sixth of his career.

Jake Allen made 19 saves in the loss for the Blues (36-27-7).

The rebuilding Senators had two players making NHL debuts - defenseman Erik Brannstrom and forward Max Veronneau.

                    COYOTES 6, DUCKS 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Vinnie Hinostroza's first career hat trick sent Arizona past Anaheim.

Hinostroza scored his third goal of the night with 51 seconds left, and hats came flying out of the crowd onto the ice.

Jason Demers added a goal and an assist for the rolling Coyotes, who have won 10 of 12. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Mario Kempe also scored, and Alex Goligoski had two assists.

Arizona's victory coupled with Minnesota's loss to Dallas moved the Coyotes three points ahead of the slumping Wild for the second Western Conference wild card. Both teams have 11 games remaining.

Darcy Kuemper stopped 37 shots for his 13th win since Feb. 9, and was credited with an assist.

Jakob Silfverberg scored for Anaheim, which had won four of six.

                    PANTHERS 4, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Mike Hoffman scored a tiebreaking goal on the power play late in the second period and Florida denied San Jose a chance to clinch a playoff berth.

Hoffman also set up Frank Vatrano's insurance goal in the third to send the Panthers to their third straight win following a six-game skid. Florida moved within seven points of Columbus for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot but has only 12 games left to make up that margin.

Jamie McGinn and Dryden Hunt also scored for the Panthers, and rookie Sam Montembeault made 26 saves to win his first career road start.

Melker Karlsson and Kevin Labanc scored for the Sharks, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. San Jose looked tired playing for the third time in four nights and missed an opportunity to become the first Western Conference team to clinch a postseason slot. More importantly, the Sharks failed to increase their one-point lead over second-place Calgary in the Pacific Division race. The Flames have one game in hand.

Martin Jones made 23 saves in San Jose's second regulation loss at home since Dec. 20.

                    PREDATORS 3, KINGS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Colton Sissons had a goal and an assist, Pekka Rinne made 25 saves and Nashville kept pace in the Central Division race with a victory over Los Angeles.

Viktor Arvidsson and Craig Smith also scored for the Predators, who snapped a two-game skid with a comfortable win over the last-place Kings.

Led by Sissons' first multipoint game since Jan. 7, Nashville remained one point behind Central-leading Winnipeg. The defending division champion Predators also increased their lead over third-place St. Louis and Dallas to six points, although the Jets, Blues and Stars all have two games in hand on Nashville.

Austin Wagner scored and Jonathan Quick stopped 31 shots for the Kings, who opened a five-game homestand by losing for the 14th time in 16 games.

                        7) Upsets of the Day:
                        — West Virginia (+13) 79, Texas Tech 74
                        — Southern Utah (+7.5) 83, Northern Colorado 64

                        — Nebraska (+5.5) 69, Maryland 61

                        6) Wow, the announcers on the Big 14 Network are incredible shills; every game is great, every kid is wonderful, never is heard a discouraging word.

Near the end of the Penn State-Minnesota game, couple kids start jawing at each other, and one of Penn State’s subs walks off the bench to join the fray. He winds up getting tossed out of the game for it, but the TV analyst is defending the kid. Seriously.

                        5) Marquette’s Markus Howard scored 30 points against St John’s Thursday; it was his 6th career game against the Johnnies. In the first five games:
                        — He was 5-34 inside the arc.
                        — He was 12-31 on the arc
                        — He scored a total of 55 points (11 ppg) in those games.
                        — This game was a whole lot better.

                        4) Washington State fired basketball coach Ernie Kent Thursday. Here is the record of the last few Cougar basketball coaches:
                        — 1999-2003: Paul Graham 31-79
                        — 2003-06: Dick Bennett 36-49
                        — 2006-09: Tony Bennett 69-33
                        — 2009-14: Ken Bone 80-86
                        — 2014-19: Ernie Kent 58-98

If that doesn’t prove that Tony Bennett is a great freakin’ coach, not sure what does.

                        3) Bowling Green 99, Ball State 86— This game was 54-51 at the half; you don’t see that much, a game where both teams have 50+ at halftime.

                        2) San Diego State 63, UNLV 55— Since 2006, Aztecs are 8-0 vs UNLV in the Mountain West tournament; seeing how the tournament is almost always in Las Vegas, thats quite a streak.

                        1) Utah State-Fresno State figures to be a very good game in the Mountain West semi-finals tonight; teams split a pair of one-point decisions this season, with road team winning both of them.
