BOSTON (AP) Josh Manson and Rickard Rakell scored second-period goals to lead Anaheim to a 4-3 victory over Boston on Thursday night.

Andrew Cogliano and Kevin Bieksa also scored for the Ducks, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Jonathan Bernier stopped 31 shots.

Zdeno Chara, Austin Czarnik and David Krejci had Boston's goals. It was the Bruins' fifth loss in six games (1-3-2).

Boston's backup goaltender Anton Khudobin made 23 saves. The Bruins have won just one game that regular netminder Tuukka Rask hasn't started.

      ---

      BLACKHAWKS 5, ISLANDERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Richard Panik scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:13 left in the third period for Chicago.

Panik's eighth of the season gave Chicago its fourth victory in five games and eighth in the last 10 meetings with the Islanders.

Scott Darling made 28 saves as the Blackhawks (20-8-4) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit.

Anders Lee scored his ninth goal of the season for New York, and eighth in the last 11 games, to break a 3-all tie 22 seconds into the second period. That followed a wild first period in which each team scored three times.

      ---

COYOTES 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2, SO

TORONTO (AP) - Former Toronto forward Peter Holland scored the shootout winner for Arizona.

Traded to the Coyotes last week, Holland was the only one of the three shooters for each team to score in the tiebreaker.

Jordan Martinook and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored in regulation for Arizona, and Mike Smith made 44 saves. The Coyotes have won three of their last four games to improve to 10-14-6.

Arizona product Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner scored for Toronto, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves. The Leafs have lost four straight at home and are 12-11-6 overall.

      ---

      KINGS 4, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Nic Dowd had a tie-breaking goal late in the second period and Tyler Toffoli scored twice in the third for Los Angeles.

Derek Forbort scored 21 seconds into the game on the Kings' first shot and Dowd scored off his own rebound with 17 seconds left in the second period. Toffoli scored with 6:10 left in the game, giving Los Angeles a two-goal cushion that was safe against a team that is struggling to score and he added an empty-net goal with 3:34 to go.

The Red Wings had two shots in the first, their lowest total for any period this season and added just six more in the second.

Jeff Zatkoff made 17 saves for the Kings. Detroit's Jimmy Howard stopped 27 shots.

      ---

      WILD 5, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Devan Dubnyk made 34 saves, Eric Staal scored twice and Minnesota won its sixth straight.

Dubnyk's best save came with 8:30 remaining in the third period when he denied Ryan Johansen from the left faceoff dot with the Predators on a power play and Minnesota holding a one-goal lead.

Jonas Brodin, Charlie Coyle and Mikael Granlund also scored for Minnesota, which extended its longest winning streak of the season.

Ryan Ellis and Mike Fisher had the goals for the Predators, who have lost three of four.

      ---

      BLUES 5, DEVILS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists and Alex Pietrangelo scored the go-ahead goal for St. Louis.

Jori Lehtera, Nail Yakupov and Patrik Berglund also scored for the Blues, who overcame an early two-goal deficit. Jake Allen made 24 saves as St. Louis improved to 13-1-3 on home ice.

Adam Henrique and Miles Wood scored for the Devils, while Cory Schneider made 26 saves. New Jersey's losing streak is at a season-high four games and the Devils dropped their seventh straight game against St. Louis.

      ---

      JETS 4, PANTHERS 3, SO

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mathieu Perreault scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout for Winnipeg.

Perreault did some slow stickhandling before flipping a forehand shot past Roberto Luongo to end Winnipeg's four-game losing streak.

Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and an assist, Adam Lowry and Bryan Little also scored in regulation, and Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves.

Aleksander Barkov, Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck scored power-play goals - with Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom in the penalty box for each one - in the second period for Florida. Luongo made 29 saves.

      ---

      RANGERS 2, STARS 0

DALLAS (AP) - Rick Nash scored an unassisted, short-handed goal in the third period and two New York goalies combined for the shutout.

Nash broke up a pass by Jamie Benn near the Rangers' blue line, skated down the ice and put a snap shot past Dallas goalie Antti Niemi at 7:08.

Mats Zuccarello added an empty-net goal.

Henrik Lundqvist started in net for New York for the first time in six games, but left for 5:31 of the first period after Dallas' Cody Eakin hit him behind the net. Eakin received a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct.

Lundqvist finished with 27 saves. His brief replacement, Antti Raanta, had none.

Niemi made 28 saves for Dallas.

      • Friday’s six-pack

        — Seahawks 24, Rams 3– Seattle clinches the NFC West title.

        — Rams were first NFL team with a logo on their helmet; it was designed by Fred Gehrke, who played for the Rams and whose grandson is Christian Yelich, the Marlins’ left-fielder.

        — Former Villanova/NBA star Kerry Kittles is now an assistant coach at Princeton.

        — Monmouth 82, Memphis 79— Statement win for the Hawks.

        — 5-9 Marcus Keene has been a dynamo for Central Michigan this season; when he played at Youngstown State, he was listed at 5-11. Apparently the move to CMU cost him a couple of inches.

        — Michael Floyd gets a DUI, is cut by Arizona, gets signed by the 1st-place Patriots. Players on cruddy teams will be driving drunk all weekend, trying to get cut so they can hook up with good teams.

Friday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

        13) RIP Craig Sager; the TNT sideline reporter passed away Thursday at age 65, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Known for his colorful wardrobe, Sager inspired us with his toughness as he would commute from chemo treatments to NBA playoff games last spring, then go back for chemo treatments the next day.

“Time is something that cannot be bought, it cannot be wagered with God, and it is not in endless supply, time is simply how we live our lives.” RIP sir.

        12) Derek Dooley is the Cowboys’ WR coach; he was fired as Tennessee’s football coach four years ago. This month he got the last of his payments from Tennessee for having coached there. Four years of checks without stepping foot in Knoxville; not bad.

        11) Jordy Nelson has 17 red zone receptions (plays inside opponents’ 20-yard line), the most of anyone in the NFL.

        10) Tom Brady’s career record against Denver is 6-9, the only NFL team he is under.500 against.

        9) Our thoughts and prayers are with baseball great Rod Carew, who received both a new heart and a new kidney Thursday. What a hitter Carew was, a career .328 batter.

        8) Chicago Bulls are the only NBA team this season that has scored more points on the foul line than they have on the 3-point arc.

        7) Ole Miss signed a new offensive coordinator from I-AA Sam Houston State, a team that ran the Air Raid offense. Ole Miss HC Hugh Freeze was once a high school coach, so hiring a guy from a I-AA program is no big deal.

        6) Sean Woods “resigned” as basketball coach at Morehead State, which probably means they gave him some money so he would go away and they wouldn’t have to fire him. One parent claimed Woods head-butted his son, one of the Morehead players, which obviously is not good.

        5) NFL salary cap is expected to go up around $12M next year, so next time Richard Sherman whines about Thursday night games, maybe he should say whether or not he would be willing to take less of a salary if the NFL eliminated Thursday games. Maybe he would, maybe not.

        4) 20 of 80 teams playing in bowl games had a 6-6 or worse record, part of the reason ESPN is having a harder time finding title sponsors for these games that featured such mediocre teams.

        3) SEC Network is showing lot of basketball this month, but by God, except for Kentucky, does anyone in the SEC go to any of these games? Games at Alabama-Tennessee-Miss State-LSU, they seemed more like funerals than games on a college campus. After New Year’s, when conference games start, things will pick up but these December games have had practice-like atmospheres.

        2) If you care about such things, Golden State Warriors are 4-0 as a road favorite when laying 7 or less points, 3-8 when laying 8+ points.

        1) Given what happened earlier today, I’m not sure how any NBA player can simply take a day off now to “rest”. Live your life, use the gifts God gave you to entertain the public. Ron Boone played in 1,041 consecutive ABA/NBA games and his team didn’t travel on a chartered plane. Life is short, we need to do what we can, while we can.

                        — Redskins are 13-4 vs spread in their last 17 games.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a damn cold day

                        13) NBA has a problem on their hands; teams are routinely sitting stars when they play back/back games, and fans who are paying serious money to watch these games aren’t happy. I’m not talking about players who are legitimately injured, I’m talking about guys being given nights off to “rest”. Rest from what?

Seems like most teams try to rest their stars on the road, so their fans don’t get screwed out of seeing the hometown heroes play, but what about when the Cavaliers or Warriors or Rockets go on the road?

People pay a LOT OF MONEY to see Lebron play or Steph Curry or James Harden play and if they don’t play, thats bad for future business. Bad for current business, too.

“I never thought this would happen in our sport.” Allen Iverson said that about players resting during Friday night’s Lakers-Philly broadcast.

                        12) Gregg Popovich is the man most responsible for implementing this practice, but the media won’t call him on it because he’s won a lot and he’s a grumpy human on a good day.

But I remember walking into the Mandalay Bay sportsbook just before Christmas 2012 and there was a kerfuffle because the Spurs were on TNT that night and Parker/Duncan/Ginobili weren’t playing.

Spurs won anyway that night and now that practice has spread all over the league. Guys who played 2-3 games a day in their teen/AAU years can’t play a game one night, get on a private plane and fly to another city to play again the next night, its too much for them.

I sound like the old guy telling kids to get off his lawn but I’m right; modern NBA players make a bleeping fortune and they sit out games when they’re not hurt and it sucks.

                        11) I didn’t even mention people like myself who pay $200 for the Full Court package on TV; I want to watch ball, if a star sits out, I’ll just put another game on, so it isn’t as big a deal as if you go buy game tickets, then travel to the arena for that one game.

But when the average salary in the NBA is set to jump to $9M (AVERAGE!!!!) pretty soon, you’d think guys would suck it up and actually play in all the games, so people who drove 300 miles and use their savings to let their kid see Lebron or Dwyane Wade play wouldn’t go home disappointed.

                        10) There is a big mess up in Minnesota; 10 Golden Gopher football players were suspended for their bowl game, after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault at an off-campus apartment in September was re-opened. That opened a huge can of worms.

As a result of the investigation being re-opened, the rest of the Gophers are boycotting football activities, which puts their Holiday Bowl game with Washington State in jeopardy.

There is the potential for a lot of collateral damage here; bowls generally benefit charities, so that would be bad, Washington State would be negatively impacted, the people who work at Qualcomm Park and at ESPN would lose work.

There is the chance Minnesota could drop out of the bowl and be replaced by another team, but plans have been made and it would be cumbersome for another team to re-gather and begin bowl prep. Curious to see how this one plays out.

                        9) Elsewhere in Minnesota, Adrian Peterson will play this week against the Colts, coming back a little earlier than expected from his knee surgery.

                        8) This from Mr Bill Deacon on the Interweb:

“…..At the age of 52, Bill Wyman, Sir Mick (Jagger)’s former bandmate, married an 18-year-old called Mandy Smith. A few years later, Wyman’s grown-up son from a previous marriage married Mandy’s mother.

Which meant that Wyman’s mother-in-law was also his daughter-in-law.”

                        7) Louisville suspended its offensive coordinator as a result of the Wake Forest scandal, where a disgruntled former coach leaked gameplay info to Demon Deacon opponents.

I’ll say this, whether I’m right or wrong who knows, but it is how I feel: if a friend of yours does this and contacts you with gameplay info, no one on this planet is turning his friend in. You may ask him if anything is wrong, you may take the info and toss it away, but who would rat out their friend? It is unrealistic to think that would happen. A “friend” would not do that.

                        6) Austin Wiley, a top-20 basketball prospect in the class of 2017, has enrolled at Auburn and will be immediately eligible; this means the kid gave up his senior year of high school to play college hoop right now. Decisions like this are tough; you’re giving up a piece of your normal childhood, but for what?

Chances are he is a lot younger than his new teammates; from a social standpoint, is it a positive? He has to leave home; hopefully this turns out to be a good decision for the player, and is not a reaction to two Auburn players being suspended earlier this week after they got busted by the cops with weed.

                        5) Good news: Rod Carew is expected to make a full recovery from his heart/kidney transplants that took place Thursday night into Friday- whole thing took 13 hours. Medicine is an amazing thing.

                        4) Former NBA player Darius Miles is 35 years old; he made $62M in his 11-year playing career, which ended seven years ago. Unfortunately, Miles has declared for bankruptcy; this week his sports memorabilia was auctioned off near St Louis. You make $62M in 11 years, you shouldn’t be broke seven years later. Guys need to learn how to handle their money.

A guy like Shaquille O’Neal has been brilliant with his money; he owns close to 100 fast-food places and some car washes, plus she still banks a fortune each year doing commercials. Junior Bridgman owns 70 or 80 Wendy’s, but most athletes squander their money and that is a tragedy.

                        3) North Carolina is 8-4 vs Kentucky when they’ve played, with both teams in the top ten.

                        2) We will never see anything like this, but would love to hear a President’s candid thoughts (any President) after he leaves office.

                        — Was it what he thought it would be like?
                        — Did the time fly by?
                        — Did he enjoy it at all?
                        — Did he miss being able to drive his own car?
                        — Would he do it all over again, if he could?
                        — What advice would he give to future Presidents?

                        1) Nothing brings out hostility in people like getting stuck in traffic jams at Christmastime, when everyone is in a hurry to do the same thing; where I live, traffic jams are uncommon, but there was one today around 1:45 in the afternoon and people were salty about it. Horns blaring, near-accidents, people cutting off other cars, great fun.

Guy in lane next to me in a red Mercedes banged his horn so hard it looked like he might’ve hurt his hand. Why? Because the car in front of him let someone cut in front of them from a parking lot. Hey buddy, you drive a Mercedes, you’re probably rich. Chill. Merry Christmas!!!
