NHL notebook: G Howard returns to Red Wings
December 7, 2016

The Detroit Red Wings removed goaltender Jimmy Howard from injured reserve on Wednesday.

Howard, 32, has shown significant progress since suffering a groin injury on Nov. 25 against the New Jersey Devils. He is 5-5-0 with a 1.82 goals-against average and .940 save percentage in 12 games (11 starts) this season.

The Red Wings also assigned center Tomas Nosek and goaltender Jared Coreau to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins.

--The Edmonton Oilers placed defensemen Mark Fayne on injured reserve.

Fayne, 29, logged just 4:34 of ice time due to an undisclosed injury in the 4-3 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. He has played in only four games this season because of injuries, posting two assists.

The Oilers also recalled defenseman David Musil from the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League. Musil, 23, skated in 16 games with the Condors this season, posting one goal, five assists and eight penalty minutes. He played in four career NHL games with the Oilers, registering two assists and two penalty minutes.

--The San Jose Sharks recalled defenseman Mirco Mueller from the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League.

Mueller, 21, ranks third among defensemen on the Barracuda in assists with six in 16 games this season. In 78 career AHL games, he has 20 points (two goals, 18 assists). In 50 NHL games, Mueller has one goal and three assists.

--The Boston Bruins assigned forward Noel Acciari to Providence of the American Hockey League.

Acciari, 24, appeared in 12 games with the NHL's Bruins in 2016-17, logging two assists and four penalty minutes. He skated in 31 career NHL games with the Bruins the past two seasons, compiling three assists and 12 penalty minutes.

--The Anaheim Ducks recalled right winger Stefan Noesen from the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League.

Noesen, 23, appeared in two career NHL games with Anaheim. He played in the Ducks' franchise-tying 10th straight victory on March 3 in Arizona.

Noesen has three goals, eight assists and 28 penalty minutes in 18 games with the Gulls this season.

--The New York Rangers recalled forward Nicklas Jensen from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

Jensen, 23, played in 21 games with the Wolf Pack this season, registering eight goals, seven assists and 18 penalty minutes. He leads Hartford in shots on goal (68), is tied for the team lead in goals and ranks second in points (15).

Jensen skated in 24 career NHL games over parts of three seasons, all with the Vancouver Canucks, recording three goals, three assists and 10 penalty minutes.

Penguin Power
The Pittsburgh Penguins bludgeoned the Ottawa Senators by an 8-5 score Monday night for their eighth consecutive over result. They will travel to Sunrise to meet the Florida Panthers Thursday night. The two sides met in the Steel City Oct. 25 with the Pens coming out on top 3-2 in a push on the total. The past four meetings between the Penguins and Panthers have resulted in no overs, one under and three pushes. In the past 11 road outings the 'over' is 7-3-1 for the Pens.

Tropical Depression
The Carolina Hurricanes have had a power outage lately, posting two or fewer goals in each of their past four games, and seven of their past eight. During the eight-game span the Canes are averaging 1.6 goals per game, and it's no surprise the 'under' is 7-1-3 in the past 11 games for Carolina. The Hurricanes are also struggling to produce wins, going 2-4-1 in the past seven outings. They begin a three-game West Coast road swing Tuesday evening in Anaheim. The Hurricanes are 0-4-1 in their past five road games, and 3-7-3-2 overall on the road this season.

Tuesday, Nov. 22
The Rangers and Islanders battle for Gotham supremacy at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Rangers are 32-15-1 in their past 48 trips to Uniondale/Brooklyn, and the road team is 13-5 in the past 18 meetings in this series. The Islanders are just 3-15 in their past 18 games against Eastern Conference teams and 2-6 in their past eight against the Metropolitan Division. ... The Bruins host the Avalanche, looking for their third win in the past four in this series. They won 2-0 in the first meeting Nov. 13 in Denver, as the 'under' cashed for the seventh time in eight meetings. Last season the Bruins topped the Avalanche 6-2, ending a 7-0-1 run by Colorado in Boston which dated back to March 30, 1998. The Wild host the Oilers, as they look to stay hot against Edmonton. Minnesota won 2-1 in overtime Dec. 4, and they have had good luck in Northern Alberta. They have struggled against the Oilers on home ice, however, winning just one of their past four in St. Paul, while going 4-4-1 in their past nine home meetings with Edmonton. The 'under' has cashed in five of the past seven in this series. ... The Ducks welcome the Sharks to town for the third meeting of the season. Both teams have a win in two meetings in San Jose, with the Ducks coming out on top 3-2 in the most recent outing. The 'under' is 4-0-2 in the past six in this series and 6-1-2 in the past nine. — White Sox traded Adam Eaton to Washington; they got four prospects in return. Eaton is overvalued by the sabermetric guys.

— Colorado 68, Xavier 66— Important win for the Pac-12.

— Grand Canyon 76, San Diego State 72— Very bad loss for the Mountain West.

— Aroldis Chapman gets $86M for five years to be the closer in the Bronx.

— Cubs replace Chapman by trading Jorge Soler to the Royals for Wade Davis.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) Used to be I bought the NBA League Pass in part just to watch the Warriors play; their games were so much fun and Golden State has long played a wide-open, entertaining style.

Now that Kevin Durant stuffed the ballot box in trying to win a championship ring, Golden State isn’t fun to watch anymore; they’ve already won eight games by 23+ points. Close games are fun to watch; when it is 70-43 in the second quarter, not so much.

12) That said, Klay Thompson scored 60 points against Indiana Monday night; he made 21 baskets. On the 21 touches where he scored those hoops, he dribbled a total of 11 times. Catch-and-shoot…..get open and drill a jumper.

Kids who are interesting in learning the right way to play should watch Thompson and Steph Curry; they are so fundamentally sound in getting open and teammates give them great passes.

11) It is a good week to play basketball for Duke; they played Florida in New York City Tuesday and now they’re going to Las Vegas to play UNLV Saturday. Pretty good week for a college kid.

10) During the Jet game Monday night, Jon Gruden seemed annoyed that Baylor’s football team doesn’t have an actual playbook; he mentioned it more than once. It is a little unusual.

Speaking of Baylor and the Jets, Bryce Petty will start the Jets’ last four games, which seems like a good idea. At least they can get an idea if he’s good enough to be their QB moving forward.

9) Odd Fact of the Day: Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins both have only one home loss this season, both to the Tennessee Titans. Wouldn’t have guessed that.

8) This is crazy; LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will make $5.5M over the next three years- thats almost $2M a year, and he isn’t the head coach!!!

7) Former Alabama QB Blake Barnett, who started the Crimson Tide’s first game this year, has transferred to Arizona State

6) LA Clippers played 21 games in the first 36 days of the season; this week was the first time since October they two off days in a row.

5) Before the Lions won in New Orleans Sunday, they had lost 22 road games in row the week after Thanksgiving. Figuring Detroit usually has three extra days to prepare after playing on Thanksgiving Day, losing 22 games in a row is pretty dismal, even if they were all road games.

4) Over their last eight games, Jacksonville Jaguars are -16 (2-18) in turnovers.

3) Indiana State 72, Butler 71— Sycamore fans stormed the court after this upset, which happened on Larry Bird’s 60th birthday.

2) Supposedly, Sylvester Stallone wrote the original Rocky screenplay in 3.5 days.
