        • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Tom Brady has won 16 NFL games while throwing 50+ passes; next-highest in NFL history are several guys, who each won five such games.

-- Pat Haden makes $2.5M a year as USC's AD; apparently he also makes another half million or so as a member of six corporate/non-profit boards. Must be nice.

-- They made another Rocky movie, this one with Apollo Creed's son boxing. Oy.

-- Ryan Tannehill now holds the NFL record with 25 consecutive completions; I'm surprised the number is that low for an all-time record.

-- Danny Woodhead caught seven passes on one drive Sunday, the most by any player since Troy Brown caught seven passes on one drive in a 2002 game.

-- Some good news: Craig Sager will be back working NBA games on TNT when the season starts this week; he is doing well in his battle with leukemia. Great!!!

          **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

We're moving the weekly NFL wrap to Tuesday this week........

          13) RIP Flip Saunders, who lost his battle with lymphoma at age 60. I used to go to Florida for my summer vacation to watch AAU basketball. One summer Saunders' son was playing for a team (Minnesota Magic??) and I was watching their game down in Orlando at Disney World. Saunders was there, but not coaching. There were six games going on at once in the building; the place was a beehive of activity.

At halftime, I drifted towards the concession stand (surprise!!!) and walked down the hall where the Minnesota team was resting. Flip Saunders had a grease board and was diagramming stuff for the kids, teaching them about the x's and o's of basketball. No yelling, just instruction and quiet encouragement.

What an education those kids must've gotten. RIP, sir.

          12) Great stat on the Browns-Rams game on CBS yesterday: St Thomas Aquinas HS in Florida has 15 alumni playing in the NFL; next most are three schools with six. Michael Irvin, Chris Evert also went to St Thomas Aquinas.

          11) Giants ran a kick and an INT back for TD in the same game Sunday for the first time since 1951 (in regular season); last time they did that the guy who ran the pick-6 back was Tom Landry, who went on to be a pretty good coach.

          10) New Orleans Saints have 25 new players on their team this year, most in NFL.

          9) Do NASCAR drivers have a concussion protocol? Do older drivers suffer from hearing loss? It has to be really, really loud in those cars.

          8) NFL wants its officials to pick out someone to penalize whenever there is a brief scuffle, which is impossible to do (correctly). Why not just throw the flag, call fouls on both sides and move on? NFL is the most over-officiated sport ever.

          7) Someone named Smylie Kaufman won the Las Vegas PGA stop this week; last week it was Emiliano Grillo; the two guys are a combined 46 years old. Lot of really good young golfers world-wide.

          6) Miami fired Al Golden Sunday; now both sides can move on. Golden is a good coach who wasn't a great fit in Miami; the alumni blamed him for everything this side of global warming. Very curious to see who gets this job next; the alumni are mouthy and demanding, they don't have a great home field advantage and they're in a league. When they were a power, Miami was an independent and scheduled differently. .

          5) Northeast of Miami, UCF coach George O'Leary "retired" during an 0-8 season; the kicker here is that OC Brent Kay was promised the job after O'Leary and because he is not getting it, the school has to pay Kay $700K to go away- must be nice.

          4) Philip Rivers' wife is having the couple's 8th child any day now; I have a friend who has seven kids. How do you keep track of all of their names?

          3) Odd news of the weekend: Ruben Amaro Jr was recently canned as Phillies' GM; he is now the first base coach for the Red Sox. Very unusual career move.

          2) New England's first drive of the second half this year: Six drives, 59 plays, 444 yards, 7.53 yards/play. Three TDs, three field goals. Good adjustments.

          1) What would the NFL be like if the players wore no equipment?

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Minnesota and Winnipeg combined for eight goals through two periods, and after building a 5-1 lead, the Jets withstood a furious late-game rally by the Wild to hold on for a 5-4 victory on Sunday.

The Jets got two goals from Drew Stafford and one each from Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd and Nikolaj Ehlers. Minnesota got goals from Jason Zucker, Mikko Koivu, Justin Fontaine and Zach Parise.

                  Rangers 4, Flames 1

NEW YORK -- Antti Raanta made 22 saves as the New York Rangers knocked off Calgary at Madison Square Garden.

The victory pushed the Rangers into first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Flames have yet to win a game in regulation.

Kevin Klein, Dan Girardi, Oscar Lindberg and Derick Brassard scored for the Rangers while Jiri Hudler scored for the Flames.

                  Kings 3, Oilers 2

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Tanner Pearson scored the go-ahead goal with 3:24 to play, and Los Angeles extended its winning streak to five games with a win over Edmonton.

Drew Doughty led the way with two assists for the Kings. Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar scored goals, and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves for the win.

Taylor Hall and Benoit Pouliot got the goals for the Oilers, who lost their second game in a row. Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot stopped 31 shots.

Devils F Fuutu out 4-6 weeks with fractured foot

New Jersey Devils forward Tuomo Ruutu is expected to be out 4-6 weeks with a fracture in his right foot.

Ruutu has missed the past four games with a foot injury. The Devils said Monday that the fracture did not show up initially. Ruutu has no points and six shots on goal in three games this season.

Forward Bobby Farnham was claimed off waivers Monday from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Farnham has five penalty minutes in three games this season.

Under teams collide in the NHL Monday night

Two great under plays face off in NHL action when with Anaheim Ducks visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. The teams are a combined 1-11-1 O/U this season.

The Ducks are having a historically bad offensive start to the season, scoring just 0.9 goals per game on their way to a 1-5-1 O/U start.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are 0-6-2 O/U thanks to scoring 2.2 goals per game, while allowing just 2.0 goals per game.

The total for tonight's matchup is set at 5.0.

Favorites continue to be red-hot on the ice

Favorites continued their red-hot run to start the NHL season by going 3-0 straight up Sunday night.

They are now 73-32-8-3 for the season, good for a success rate of approximately 63 percent.

With three more games on the schedule Monday, the Islanders (vs. Flames), the Maple Leafs (vs. Coyotes) and the Blackhawks (vs. Ducks) will be favored.

                        • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Lions fired their OC and offensive line coaches, just before they headed over the pond to play the Chiefs in London Sunday. The head coach should be next.

-- Baylor QB Seth Russell (neck) will have surgery, is out for the year.

-- 5-time All-Star Torii Hunter retired; he was an excellent defensive outfielder.

-- Texans coach Bill O'Brien wanted to cut Ryan Mallett after he missed the team charter to Miami, but GM Rick Smith overruled him. Where is Hard Knocks when we really need it?

-- Purdue's best basketball recruit hasn't been cleared yet by the NCAA; he was adopted by a guy in 8th grade who is a Purdue alum. Make a decision, people; the season starts in 2.5 weeks.

-- UNLV's Chris Wood made the 76ers roster, the 10th Findlay Prep alum to make the NBA in the last five years.

                          **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up Week 7 in NFL......

                          13) Jaguars 34, Bills 31-- Jax led 27-3 with 3:00 left in half, but blew lead, throwing awful pick-6 with 5:21 left to fall behind 31-27. Bortles then drove them 84 yards in 3:07 for the win, hitting Allen Hurns for the winning TD. Hurns now has a TD in his last five games-- Jacksonville is slowly getting better- they scored defensive TDs 0:07 apart in the second quarter. Buffalo screwed up trading Matt Cassel to Dallas.

                          12) Rams 24, Browns 6-- Cleveland had scored 26.2 ppg in its previous five games, but St Louis forced/recovered four fumbles and rode rookie RB Gurley to a win that evens their record at 3-3. Rams scored defensive TD on Browns' third play of game.

                          11) Chiefs 23, Steelers 13-- KC snapped five-game skid against QB making his first NFL start. Chiefs still had only two TDs on five red zone drives. Home favorites are 25-20-1 vs spread in non-divisional games this season.

                          10) Dolphins 44, Texans 26-- Houston backup QB Mallett "missed the plane" to game; this is same guy who didn't show up for practice the day after Hoyer was named starting QB. Tough spot; QBs are hard to come by; if they cut him, he'll get scooped up in five minutes, but he seems like a jerk who should be cut.

This game was 41-nil at half; in Week 4 at Atlanta, Texans trailed 28-0 at half. O'Brien almost has to get fired, just a matter of when. Would be second year in a row the coach on Hard Knocks gets the boot. Not good for HBO or NFL Films.

As if things couldn't get worse for Houston, Arian Foster has a torn achilles.

                          9) Patriots 30, Jets 23-- Nine rushes, 16 yards; that was it for the Patriots' run game; they trailed 20-16 with 12:50 left, but on their last two drives, Brady drove them on TD drives of 80-68 yards for the win. NE has now won eight of last nine series games; five of last seven were decided by 3 or less points; Jets lost last five visits here by 9-3-3-2-7 points. Jets are much-improved, but Brady is still Brady.

                          8) Vikings 28, Lions 19-- There were rumors all Saturday night that Adrian Peterson was sick and wouldn't play; he ran ball 19 times for 98 yards and caught three passes. If playoffs started today, Minnesota would be #6 seed in NFC. Detroit is 1-6 as they head to London for a game with Kansas City.

                          7) Falcons 10, Titans 7-- Tennessee lost its ninth home game in a row; three of their home losses this year are by 3 or less points. Atlanta is an unimpressive 6-1; they've trailed in 4th quarter in four of six wins and this game wasn't much better, but they are still 6-1, albeit still behind Carolina in NFC South.

                          6) Redskins 31, Buccaneers 30-- Greatest comeback in Washington history; trailing 24-0 in first half, Cousins led Redskins back- they scored winning TD with 0:24 left, driving 80 yards on 11 plays. Bucs' WR Evans caught eight balls for 164 yards. Skins are 3-4 and only a game out of first place in NFC East.

                          5) Saints 27, Colts 21-- Indy is 3-4 but still atop a horrible AFC South; their teams are 6-1 vs spread outside the division. Colt owner Irsay had harsh words with GM Grigson after this loss-- Saints led 20-nil at half. New Orleans won three of last ffour games, scoring 58 points in last two games.

                          4) Raiders 37, Chargers 29-- Oakland led 37-6 early in the third quarter in a stadium where it was hard to tell who the home team was. NFL needs to clear up this stadium thing; who is going to LA, who isn't. Raiders started six drives in Charger territory; all 12 San Diego drives started 80+ yards from goal line.

                          3) Giants 27, Cowboys 20-- Dallas was -4 in turnovers, gave up a kick return TD and still almost won; they ran ball for 233 yards, but lost to Giants for first time in last six meetings. Divisional home favorites are now 5-16-1 vs spread this season.

Not a lot of fun having only two 4:25 games; NFL is leaning on Cowboys to produce TV ratings, but they stink without Romo and he is still a month away from playing.

                          2) Panthers 27, Eagles 16-- Carolina is unbeaten, Eagles are 3-4 and Rams need Sam Bradford to start two more games so they can bank a 4th-round draft pick for dealing the oft-injured QB last spring. If Dick Butkus were playing today, he'd be Thomas Lewis of the Panthers; hard hitter, very, very good player.

                          1) Cardinals 26, Ravens 18-- If the 2016 NFL Draft were this morning, it would be weird, since it isn't 2016 yet, but Baltimore would have the first pick- all six of their losses are by 8 or less points. Carson Palmer is now 75-75 as an NFL starting QB.

Red Wings D Green out 2-3 weeks

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green will be out 2-3 weeks because of an upper-body injury, the Red Wings announced Monday.

Green, 30, was injured in the first period on Friday night against the Calgary Flames. He sat out Saturday's game against the Vancouver Canucks.

In seven games this season, Green has one assist and is averaging 19:37 of ice time per game.

Defenseman Kyle Quincey also was hurt against the Flames. Quincey is in the concussion protocol and will miss at least the next three games, the team said.
