  • Preview: Red Wings (3-3) at Flames (1-5)

    Date: October 23, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

After a promising start, the Detroit Red Wings have hardly performed at their best in all three phases lately - including half of a road trip - but they'll next face a team that's fared even worse so far this season.

The Calgary Flames' next chance to end one of the lowliest starts in franchise history and worst on their home ice will come Friday night.

Detroit beat its first three opponents by a combined 11-4 margin but has seen that differential reversed in three consecutive defeats, getting outscored 12-5. The Red Wings (3-3-0) have gone 0 for 11 on the power play in those defeats and allowed four goals in 11 times short-handed.

They went 0 for 6 with a man advantage in a 3-1 loss to Edmonton on Wednesday, the second of four consecutive road games.

"We just have to figure it out. It's in the locker room. We know we can play good hockey. We just have to put it behind and play a little better," forward Tomas Tatar said. "We will talk about it for sure. We will see the video, what we did wrong, refocus and we have the next game against Calgary."

The Red Wings will try to begin their turnaround against a Flames team that's 1-5-0 and has lost its first four home games for the first time.

Calgary has been outscored 11-4 in the first two of three straight at home, losing 6-2 to Washington on Tuesday. Karri Ramo was pulled in the second period and sent to the minors Thursday.

Bob Hartley, last season's Jack Adams Award winner, might also shake up the team's defensive pairings if the past two practices are an indication.

"Things aren't working so you've got to change something and try to get the guys going. Anytime you can move up and play a little more or do something different, it's great," Hartley told the team's official website. "Everyone wants to play as much as possible, but whatever a team needs to win, we've got to find a way to do it."

The Flames have never earned fewer than three points in their first seven games. They had three ties and four losses to begin 1995-96, eventually bottoming out at 0-7-3.

They have dropped the past two home games against Detroit - each by one goal - but snapped a three-game overall skid with a 5-2 win in the most recent meeting March 6.

Former Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler had a pair of goals in that victory, but he's pointless in his last three games after collecting two goals and two assists in the first three. Mikael Backlund has two goals and two assists in his last three against the Red Wings, but he's scored once this season.

The Flames are expected to face Jimmy Howard, who is 1-3-0 with a 3.56 goals-against average in his past four matchups. He lost 5-3 to Carolina last Friday after allowing one goal in his first two games.

Calgary's Jonas Hiller is 3-1-0 with a 1.73 GAA in his last four against Detroit.

Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has four goals and two assists in his past three against Calgary. He has no points in his last four games after totaling four goals and an assist in the first two.

    • Preview: Capitals (5-1) at Oilers (3-4)

      Date: October 23, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Winning streaks have been rare for the Edmonton Oilers, but they've put together one in October for the second straight season.

This time, though, they hope they can sustain their improved play.

Edmonton aims for a fourth straight victory Friday night against the visiting Washington Capitals, who are looking for a fifth consecutive win of their own.

The Oilers (3-4-0) opened with four losses in a row, going 1 for 14 on the power play and totaling five goals. They've scored 10 in their three victories while converting 3 of 9 chances with the man advantage.

A win Friday would put them in a position similar to last year when they started 4-4-1 and had a four-game winning streak. They then lost 24 of their 27 en route to a 24-44-14 finish, however, tying their second-worst winning percentage in club history.

After failing to record a point in his first two games, Connor McDavid is doing his best to live up to the hype that comes with being drafted No. 1 overall and the expectations of being a franchise cornerstone at 18 years old. He has four goals and two assists in the last five contests, and his 0.86 points per game have him on the best pace by an Oilers rookie since Jason Arnott (0.87) in 1993-94.

He scored in the second period of Wednesday's 3-1 win against Detroit, Edmonton's first regulation victory in 18 meetings.

"It was a good win," coach Todd McLellan said. "It is one that we will bank and be proud of, but there are still areas of our game where we have to get better. We're going to be saying that in February. We need to keep plugging away."

While this marks just the sixth winning streak of three-plus games for the Oilers since the 2012-13 season began, the Capitals (5-1-0) are on their 20th in that span, taking a 3-2 win in Vancouver on Thursday for their fourth straight.

Washington hadn't trailed past the first period in its first three consecutive wins, but overcame a 2-1 third-period deficit Thursday behind goals by Jay Beagle and Alex Ovechkin.

"We'll take the win, maybe not our best game, but that's what we're trying to do - collect points," coach Barry Trotz said.

Ovechkin, who has one goal in all five games in which he's played, had the last of his three six-game goal streaks in 2008. He also has eight goals and four assists in his last seven matchups with Edmonton, including three multi-goal games.

Washington's only loss came 5-0 to San Jose on Oct. 13 when Ovechkin sat out after missing the team's morning skate.

The Capitals are limiting opponents to an NHL-low 24.3 shots per game, while the Oilers' 27.0 shots rank near the bottom of the league.

Philipp Grubauer will make his first start of the season for Washington, spelling Braden Holtby, who has posted a 2.03 goals-against average while starting each game. Grubauer is 7-6-5 with a 2.44 GAA in 20 career games.

While the Capitals own one of the NHL's best power plays with five goals on 18 chances, Edmonton is killing off a league-best 92.0 percent of penalties after finishing 28th last season (76.7 percent).

The Oilers won both meetings last season and own a 31.4 percent power-play success rate while winning nine of the last 11 meetings in Edmonton.

      • Preview: Hurricanes (2-4) at Kings (3-3)

        Date: October 23, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

Sound play from a pair of Stanley Cup-winning goaltenders has helped the Los Angeles Kings and Carolina Hurricanes recover from slow starts.

Jonathan Quick seeks to maintain his current form and lead the Kings to a fourth consecutive victory when the Hurricanes visit Staples Center Friday night.

Los Angeles (3-3-0) was outscored 12-2 in losing its first three games, all on home ice. They've allowed just three goals during the win streak as Quick and Jhonas Enroth, who made 39 saves in his Kings debut in Thursday's 4-1 victory at San Jose, have helped trigger the turnaround.

Quick recorded a 3.70 goals-against average in the losses before stopping 47 of 49 shots in consecutive 2-1 wins over Minnesota and Colorado.

Carolina (2-4-0) also opened 0-3 while receiving shaky goaltending from Ward and Eddie Lack, but has since won two of three to begin a season-long seven-game road stretch.

Ward was instrumental to the latest victory, recording 26 saves that included a breakaway stop on Jarome Iginla in overtime, moments before Victor Rask scored the game's lone goal Wednesday at Colorado. He entered the contest with a 4.00 GAA through his first four starts.

'With 3-on-3 obviously you have to be ready for the scoring chance because they're going to be coming,' Ward said. 'The way we've seen throughout the league, the goaltender has to make a big save and then hopefully you can turn it around and go back the other way. Fortunately we were able to do that.'

Hurricanes coach Bill Peters hasn't declared whether Ward or Lack will start in Friday's opener of a back-to-back. Carolina continues the trek Saturday in San Jose.

Lack struggled in his only start, a 4-1 loss to Florida on Oct. 13, but went 2-1-0 with a 1.62 GAA in three against the Kings while with fellow Pacific Division member Vancouver last season.

Whomever gets the call will be facing an improving Los Angeles offense led by Tyler Toffoli, who scored in a third straight game Thursday and owns four of the team's 10 goals.

Jeff Carter added his first two of the season as part of a four-point night and Milan Lucic contributed his first as a King. Both scored on a power-play unit that was 1 for 21 over the first five games.

'I think it was big for us to come in and prove ourselves. We pretty much had to," Carter said. "This was a big task coming in here. I thought we did a good job.'

The Hurricanes also have struggled in power-play situations, having gone 2 for 25.

Quick is 3-1-0 with a 1.72 GAA in four starts against Carolina, which is aiming for its first win at Los Angeles since Dec. 8, 2005, after posting the franchise's first in Denver since the Hartford Whalers prevailed in 1996.

The Hurricanes have lost four straight at Staples Center and are 1-6-1 in their last eight visits.

Quick made 25 saves in a 3-2 home win over Carolina on Nov. 20, helping Los Angeles avenge a 3-2 defeat in Raleigh 18 days earlier behind Ward's 30 saves.

            • Preview: Ducks (1-4) at Wild (4-1)
              Date: October 24, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

The turmoil surrounding the Anaheim Ducks' awful start has carried over into a road trip that reportedly will be the deciding factor in whether or not coach Bruce Boudreau keeps his job.

He doesn't have to go back too far for a reminder of how well his club is capable of playing.

Anaheim looks to beat the Minnesota Wild for the second time in a week as it makes the second stop on a five-game trip Saturday night.

The Ducks' six goals during their 1-4-1 start are by far the fewest in the league, with half of them coming from defensemen. They were blanked three times in their first four and had another listless performance in Thursday's 5-1 loss to Nashville.

'We're trying to work hard and do all the right things,' forward Corey Perry said. 'Eventually it's going to break.'

It appeared the Ducks put their scoring woes behind them Sunday when they beat Minnesota 4-1 at home, winning for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings. They couldn't build on that effort to begin the trip, though, and Boudreau could be on the hot seat.

Anaheim was the popular preseason pick to win the Stanley Cup after falling to Chicago in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals last season, but the slow start reportedly has caused general manager Bob Murray to lose his patience.

The Ducks' power play is 1 for 18, while Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have one assist apiece.

'When you are having trouble scoring and the other team gets that first goal, you've got to dig deeper,' Boudreau said. 'We sort of felt a little sorry for ourselves for the next little bit."

They won't get any sympathy from a Wild team looking to avenge its only regulation loss. Minnesota (4-1-1) has played one-goal games in its other five, including Thursday's 3-2 victory over Columbus that snapped a two-game skid.

The Wild hung on against a winless Blue Jackets team debuting new coach John Tortorella after being outshot 13-6 in the first 20 minutes. Zach Parise scored his sixth goal in the opening period before Nino Niederreiter and Thomas Vanek had goals in the second.

Minnesota has been outshot in the first period in each of its last three.

'I just feel like we talked so much about how hard they were going to come out and how hard they were going to play, I don't know if we psyched ourselves out or what but it was a pretty ugly start for us,' Parise said. 'But we were able to turn the page and be a better team in the second period.'

Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves to improve to 4-1-0 despite having a mediocre .896 save percentage. Dubnyk is 1-4-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average in his last six against the Ducks, and he'll get the start in the first of a back-to-back set.

Anton Khudobin has started each of the previous two for Anaheim ahead of Frederik Andersen, who has a 1.56 GAA in three starts and one relief appearance.

Boudreau gave Khudobin another chance after beating the Wild, but it seems likely he'll go back to Andersen as the Ducks look to win a seventh straight meeting in Minnesota.

              • Preview: Rangers (5-2) at Flyers (3-2)
                Date: October 24, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

While two straight home wins have helped ease the pain of New York's recent skid, a pair of goals from the Rangers' top two offensive weapons may hold more healing power.

New York's budding offense will try and carry the momentum on the road and into this season's first meeting with the rival Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night.

The Rangers (5-2-1) scored twice during a three-game skid, earning just one point in a 2-1 overtime loss to New Jersey on Sunday, before snapping it with a 4-0 win over San Jose on Monday followed by a 4-1 victory over Arizona on Thursday. The biggest takeaway may have been getting goals from two of their top scoring threats against the Coyotes.

Rick Nash and Chris Kreider finally found the back of the net - well, sort of - to end a seven-game opening drought. Kreider got his first goal on a redirect midway through the second period, while Nash earned his in more unusual fashion in the final minute.

Nash was awarded a goal when he was hooked on a breakaway with an empty net in front of him. The puck skidded into the corner, but Nash picked up his first of the season and 700th career point regardless.

How it happened aside, Nash and Kreider having an impact on the score sheet is promising news for the Rangers.

Nash finished with a career-high 42 goals last season and Kreider added 21, but the two combined for five assists through the first seven games. Add in defenseman Keith Yandle's first goal, and offensively things are looking up for the Rangers.

"All three of us are guys that they depend on for goals," Nash said. "It's something that we're trying to work on and trying to get better in practice. The chances are there, it's just a matter of getting the job done on the ice."

Henrik Lundqvist continued to hold up his end of the bargain with 34 saves, lowering his goals-against average to 1.99 and building his save percentage to .938.

Lundqvist has enjoyed the rivalry with the Flyers (3-2-1), going 6-2-0 with a 2.02 GAA and .930 save percentage in his last eight starts in the series. He is 28-13-3 against them for his career.

The Rangers have won four of the last five meetings but have lost four of five in Philadelphia, including a 4-2 defeat Feb. 28.

Wayne Simmonds, who scored in that game, helped the Flyers earn two points with a 5-4 overtime victory in Boston on Wednesday. Simmonds forced the extra period with a wrist shot midway through the third before Claude Giroux ended it with his second of the game.

The five goals gave Philadelphia 13 for the season and marked its first game with more than three.

Giroux liked how his team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period, but he cautioned against waiting until that point to make a push.

"I think we have to find a way to play 60 minutes like that," Giroux said. "But that game feels really good right now."

Steve Mason relieved Michal Neuvirth and allowed two goals while stopping 16 shots, including a dazzling glove save to keep the deficit at 4-2. Mason is in line to start against the Rangers, whom he is 5-3-1 against with a 2.46 GAA and .927 save percentage for his career.

                • Preview: Devils (2-3) at Sabres (1-4)
                  Date: October 24, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

In search of depth at forward, the New Jersey Devils invited Lee Stempniak to training camp. Not only did he make the team, but he's a major reason why it's won three games in a row.

Stempniak looks to continue his impressive scoring surge Saturday night when the Devils try to match their longest winning streak from last season against the Buffalo Sabres.

Stempniak was on four teams over the past two seasons, scoring 15 goals with 13 assists in 71 games with the New York Rangers and Winnipeg in 2014-15. He entered free agency over the summer and didn't land a tangible offer until the Devils (3-3-1) offered him a tryout in camp.

The right wing did enough to earn a one-year deal, and he's certainly justified that investment so far. Stempniak is tied with Adam Henrique for second on the team with six points, two behind Mike Cammalleri.

Stempniak scored in overtime of Sunday's 2-1 win over the Rangers before assisting on Adam Larsson's OT tally in a 3-2 victory over Arizona two days later.

He had two points Thursday, scoring with 32 seconds left in regulation before netting the decisive shootout attempt in a 5-4 win over Ottawa.

"We're a team that's got to fight for every inch and there's not very high expectations for us, but in the room we believe we're capable of a lot more than what people expect from us," Stempniak said. "I think that our mentality is just to go out and play until the final buzzer and that came through."

Stempniak has a chance at his first four-game point streak since he was with Calgary from Jan. 24-Feb. 1, 2014. However, he's been held off the score sheet over his last five meetings with Buffalo.

The Devils had four straight wins from Feb. 17-23, a streak that started with a 2-1 shootout win over the Sabres (2-5-0). They won all three matchups last season, holding them to one goal in each.

Cory Schneider was in net for two of those meetings, stopping 44 of 46 shots. He's 3-2-2 with a 1.53 goals-against average in seven career matchups.

He's expected to get the nod Saturday, having compiled a 2.24 GAA while starting each game of the current winning streak.

The Sabres are looking to bounce back from their worst performance of the season, giving up five unanswered goals to fall 7-2 to unbeaten Montreal on Friday.

"You're playing a team that hasn't lost a game all year," defenseman Josh Gorges said. "You've got to play the right way the whole way through and too many times, collectively as a group, we just made mistakes."

Matt Moulson and Ryan O'Reilly had a goal each against the Canadiens, giving them a team-leading four points apiece. Moulson has a goal in each of the last two homer matchups with New Jersey.

No. 2 overall pick Jack Eichel has a minus-5 rating and no points in his last four games after scoring two goals in his first three NHL contests.

It's unclear if Buffalo will start Chad Johnson in net on back-to-back nights after he surrendered a career high in goals while making 19 saves Friday. He's split two meetings with New Jersey, giving up five goals on 55 shots.

Johnson has been relied upon heavily due to an ankle injury to Robin Lehner, who is out at least six weeks.

Linus Ullmark, who was called up from AHL Rochester to backup Johnson on Friday, could be in line for his NHL debut. A sixth-round pick in 2012, the 22-year-old Ullmark went 1-2-0 with a 2.72 GAA in three games with the Americans.

                  • Preview: Maple Leafs (1-3) at Canadiens (7-0)
                    Date: October 24, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

While the Toronto Maple Leafs are starting to display signs of progress under Mike Babcock, the Montreal Canadiens continue to set the bar during the early part of this season.

Still unbeaten during the best start in their storied history, the Canadiens aim to continue another impressive streak when they host the rebuilding Maple Leafs Saturday night.

Montreal moved to 8-0-0 with Friday's 7-2 rout at Buffalo, getting two goals from Brendan Gallagher and Dale Weise and a career-high five points from Andrei Markov. The win streak is the Canadiens' longest since 2006, and they're two away from joining the 1993-94 Maple Leafs and 2006-07 Sabres for the league's best season-opening run.

'It's great to have eight wins, but (Saturday) is another challenge," said Markov, who finished with a goal and four assists while reaching 500 career points.

The Canadiens are receiving contributions throughout the roster during the surge. The top line of Max Pacioretty, Gallagher and Tomas Plekanec has accounted for 14 goals, Markov and defense partner P.K. Subban are a combined plus-27 with eight assists each and Carey Price has followed his MVP 2014-15 campaign with more stellar play in goal.

Price rested in favor of rookie Mike Condon on Friday, three days after posting a second shutout in three starts with 38 saves against St. Louis. The reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner has yielded six goals in his six outings.

'It's tough to say anything about Carey because everybody knows how valuable he is and what he brings every game,' said Pacioretty, among the league leaders with six goals.

Price made 36 saves and Pacioretty scored twice in a 3-1 victory at Toronto in the Oct. 7 opener, Montreal's seventh consecutive win in the series. Price has been in net for six of the games.

Toronto (1-3-2), which last defeated the Canadiens on Jan. 18, 2014, has won just once in Babcock's debut season but has earned points in three of the last four games. The Maple Leafs are 1-1-1 on a four-game trip following Wednesday's 2-1 shootout loss to Buffalo.

"I guess the way I look at it, the positive thing for me is we got points in three of our last four games," Babcock told the Leafs' official website. "Your belief system to me is when you walk in the rink and know you're going to win. That is the step we have to get to. We've got to get working on our compete level, got to work on our structure and got to work on being heavier on the puck in the offensive zone. The next thing you know we'll be a much better hockey club and winning more often. We're making steps."

Jonathan Bernier's play the last two games has been a plus as well. He had 34 saves on Wednesday after stopping 31 shots in a 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Oct. 17.

Bernier is 1-6-3 in 10 career starts against Montreal, however, and was dealt a sixth straight loss opening night despite allowing two goals on 28 shots.

He'll be hoping for better support from an offense that's mustered one goal or less in four of its six games, though Leo Komarov has three in his last three.

Toronto remains without center Tyler Bozak (lower body) and defenseman Jake Gardiner (undisclosed), both of whom were placed on injured reserve Friday.

                    • Preview: Coyotes (3-3) at Senators (2-2)
                      Date: October 24, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Mike Smith has crumbled since his rock-solid start, and the Arizona goaltender will have to pick up the pieces against an opponent that broke down him and the Coyotes last season.

The Ottawa Senators hope to continue their success against Smith while snapping out of their own skid when the Coyotes visit Saturday night.

Arizona (3-3-1) opened the season with three wins behind quality defense and goaltending, but things have spiraled since. In four consecutive losses, one coming in overtime, the Coyotes have surrendered 16 goals.

Smith is responsible for 14, a dozen more than he allowed in Arizona's first three games. His slump includes a benching in favor of backup Anders Lindback and an ugly goal allowed during a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday.

The Rangers scored the first of three unanswered third-period goals when Smith misplayed a puck behind Arizona's net, saying he thought he heard a teammate call for it.

"That's deflating to our team when you give up a goal like that," Smith told the team's official website. "That's on me and we'll try and get better. ... It was a brutal play."

Brutal is a good word to describe Smith's two games against Ottawa last season. He allowed 10 goals during losses of 5-1 and 7-2 in January and was benched early in the third period of the second defeat.

The rough showings lifted Smith's goals-against average to 3.39 and lowered his save percentage to .890 against Ottawa, one of seven teams against which he holds a sub-.900 save percentage.

Goaltending isn't the only issue during the Coyotes' skid as slow starts have plagued them. Arizona held a 5-0 first-period advantage in its three wins but is even at 2-2 in its losses, spoiling opportunities to jump ahead.

"That seems to be the M.O. for the last few games," captain Shane Doan told the team's official website. "We need to make sure we're ready to go."

The Coyotes have lost seven of eight in Ottawa since 2000 and are looking for their first win on a five-game road trip that ends in Toronto and Boston. The Senators are still looking for their first win at home.

Ottawa (3-2-2) started the season almost as hot as Arizona, netting three road victories in its first four games - the last a 7-3 victory over Columbus on Oct. 14. Though the Senators have scored seven goals in their last two, they've surrendered the same amount over the first 65 minutes before losing twice in shootouts to fall to 0-1-2 on home ice.

Ottawa looked to have Thursday's game against the Devils in hand when Chris Neil scored his first goal of the season in his 900th career game to put his team up 4-2 with less than 14 minutes remaining. The Senators fumbled away an extra point, though, when backup goaltender Andrew Hammond surrendered a rebound goal with 5:50 left and another in the final minute.

'It's disappointing not getting the two points out of that,' Neil said. 'The late goal hurt us and it could have went either way at the end. The frustrating part is the two points.'

Starter Craig Anderson likely will be back in net against the Coyotes to try and improve on the 4-7-1 record and 2.55 GAA he holds against them in 12 career appearances.

                      • Preview: Panthers (3-3) at Stars (6-1)
                        Date: October 24, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars are cruising along, particularly in the offensive zone, and maybe the most encouraging aspect is their top two scorers weren't needed in their most recent win.

Continued production as they return for a four-game homestand beginning with Saturday night's visit from the Florida Panthers could give the Stars their first six-game winning streak since March 2012.

Much was made of the hot starts from Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn as the duo managed 10 points each through six games before Dallas (6-1-0) completed a flawless four-game trip with Thursday's 4-1 win in Pittsburgh while neither picked up as much as an assist.

Defenseman Johnny Oduya scored for his first point with his new club, while Jason Spezza scored his fifth goal in five games.

"It's a team sport," Oduya told the team's official website. "(Benn and Seguin) are tremendous players, but they have a tough job getting on the board every night. It's good that we can have relief from some of the other guys. We have a talented group."

Their 3.57 goals per game rank among the league's leaders and they've also held their last two opponents to a goal apiece. Antti Niemi was in net for both to improve to 3-1-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .940 save percentage with his new team, and his only home game resulted in 37 saves in a 3-0 season-opening win over Pittsburgh on Oct. 8.

Special teams have also weighed heavily in Dallas' favor with a 7-for-23 power play (30.4 percent) and 18-of-20 penalty kill (90.0).

Most importantly, the Stars along with Nashville are pacing what's shaping up to again be a tough Central Division a season after a terrible start. Dallas finished seven points out of a playoff spot last season after dropping 17 of its first 26 games.

"For me, it's about making progress," coach Lindy Ruff said. "So far, we're happy with it."

Benn has four goals in his last four games against the Panthers, while Seguin has three and three assists in his previous three. Both scored twice and combined for seven points in a 4-2 win at Florida last Saturday - Dallas' third straight win in the series.

That sparked a 0-2-1 span for the Panthers (3-3-1) after a 3-1-0 start. They fell 3-2 in Chicago on Thursday with Jaromir Jagr scoring his fifth goal in seven games, giving him 11 in 27 contests with the club after managing 11 in 57 with New Jersey to start 2014-15.

The bigger issue was losing center Aleksander Barkov to an upper-body injury after he blocked a second-period shot. Coach Gerard Gallant said the puck hit Barkov, second on the team behind Jagr with six points, in the right arm or hand. There was no further update, but Jagr didn't sound optimistic.

"It's a big loss," Jagr told the team's official website. "He's our best player, and it's going to be tough to replace. Nobody knows for how long he's going to be out, so it's even tougher. But we've got to do it no matter what."

They also need to work on staying out of the penalty box. The Panthers were shorthanded eight times and are 13 of 19 (68.4) on the penalty kill in their last four.

"You can't spend that much time (killing power plays)," Gallant said. "When you're killing penalties, you're not getting scoring chances. Sixteen minutes of a hockey game in your own zone really wears on you."

Roberto Luongo has allowed three goals in each defeat on the skid, but he's 2-3-1 with a 2.17 GAA and .934 save percentage to start the season. The veteran has 3.16 and .895 marks over a 1-4-1 span against the Stars.

Dallas defenseman Jason Demers won't play after being suspended two games Friday for elbowing Penguins forward Nick Bonino.

                        • Preview: Islanders (4-1) at Blues (5-2)
                          Date: October 24, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues have won five straight over the New York Islanders, though the two players who have been most productive for them in that streak won't be on the ice Saturday night.

That's because the injury-plagued Blues traded away T.J. Oshie, and Kevin Shattenkirk remains out with a lower-body injury for this opener of a five-game homestand.

St. Louis (5-2-0) has outscored New York 25-12 in this win streak, with Oshie and Shattenkirk combining for 20 points. Oshie is now with Washington while Shattenkirk will miss his fifth straight game.

The Islanders have dropped their last four visits to St. Louis since a 6-3 victory Dec. 6, 2005.

The Blues are also without Paul Stastny and Patrik Berglund due to injuries and will be further short-handed since winger Jaden Schwartz was injured in Friday's practice when he collided with a goalpost. Schwartz is one of six skaters tied for the team lead with four assists.

"Obviously he couldn't finish practice, so that's the first alarm bell that goes off," coach Ken Hitchcock told the Blues' official website. "We sent him to the hospital to get a further evaluation and we'll give you an exact update on time frame (Saturday)."

Ty Rattie, who played 13 games over the last two seasons, has been called up from the minors to take Schwartz's place.

"Knowing him, I think he's really going to take advantage of this," Hitchcock said. "He's on that cusp of being an NHL player, and I don't think he's going to miss the opportunity to come up and play right now."

St. Louis wrapped up a 4-2-0 trip with Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Montreal. Vladimir Tarasenko's six-game run in which he piled up a team-high nine points ended.

The Blues had 38 shots against the Canadiens and are among the NHL's leaders with 33.0 per game.

New York (4-2-1) is also in that group with an average of 32.3 shots, though it was held to a season-low 26 in Friday's 5-3 home defeat to Boston that ended a four-game win streak.

'We didn't do a good job of complementing each other,' coach Jack Capuano said. 'You can't turn the puck over in this league and expect to win. We have to play a lot better than that.'

John Tavares had a first-period assist to extend his point streak to five games after he amassed eight in the Islanders' win streak. Anders Lee saw his four-game run end.

Capuano said there's a chance that winger Steve Bernier could make his club debut Saturday. Bernier has been out with a lower-body injury.

New York is well aware of its recent futility against St. Louis.

"We wanna win tomorrow," Tavares said. "Tough place to play against a good team that's rested. We're going to have to be a lot better than that (Friday), play a smarter game."

Former Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves Friday, though it's unlikely he will start this contest after he missed the first four games with an injury. Backup Thomas Greiss is 2-0-1 with a 2.64 goals-against average in three starts this year, and has posted a 2.01 GAA in winning both starts in St. Louis.

                          • Preview: Penguins (3-4) at Predators (4-1)
                            Date: October 24, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Contending for the Central Division title has become an expectation for the Nashville Predators, who have come close to doing so multiple times in recent seasons but haven't quite gotten over the hump.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are out to prove they're not in a state of decline.

Nashville seeks a fourth consecutive victory Saturday night when it hosts a Pittsburgh team having trouble finding the back of the net.

The Predators (6-1-0) made a 16-point turnaround in Peter Laviolette's first season behind the bench in 2014-15, but still had to settle for their third second-place finish since 2010-11.

Now Nashville, which spent much of last season in first place, has gotten off to another hot start. The Predators relied on goaltending while totaling 10 goals in their first four games, but have put up 12 non-shootout goals in their three straight victories.

"In the last four games, I think we have had more attack to our game," Laviolette said after Thursday's 5-1 win over Anaheim. "We have to keep getting better and keep improving."

Eric Nystrom scored his second goal before Ryan Ellis, Mike Ribeiro, Mattias Ekholm and Colin Wilson followed with their first of the season. The Predators share the early Central lead with Dallas.

"We're working hard to establish ourselves where we want to be in the standings, and that's at the top," Nystrom said. "We want to continue this the whole season and every night's a new test. We've got Pittsburgh coming in here next game, and that's going to be a really strong challenge for us. We've got to continue to improve and we want to stay on the top. That's where we think we belong."

Pittsburgh (3-4-0) won four division titles in an eight-season stretch, finishing second four other times, before dipping to fourth in 2014-15.

The Penguins' slow start to this campaign stems from a lack of offense, as it's totaled 11 goals and managed three just once. Sidney Crosby went without a point in his first five and Phil Kessel has two goals and an assist.

Nick Bonino scored the lone goal in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Dallas. Pascal Dupuis played his first regular-season game in almost a year after battling through blood clots that threatened his career and a lower-body injury that delayed his season debut.

'I'm happy to be back, but I'm definitely not happy with the result,' Dupuis said. 'We started well, but we had a little letdown.'

Former teammate James Neal has five goals and three assists during a four-game point streak for the Predators, who had dropped five straight meetings before winning 4-0 on Feb. 1.

Pekka Rinne wasn't in net for that contest but should be in this one. He's off to a 5-1-0 start with a 1.82 goals-against average after making 27 saves Thursday, but he's 0-3-1 with a 3.70 GAA in his last four against the Penguins.

Marc-Andre Fleury has started each game for Pittsburgh and should be in goal again with the club having three nights off before playing at Washington on Wednesday.

Fleury has a 2.17 GAA despite Thursday's defeat and has a 1.95 GAA in 10 career games against the Predators.

                            • Preview: Lightning (4-2) at Blackhawks (4-3)
                              Date: October 24, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Having endured plenty of transition and adversity since defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Stanley Cup, the Chicago Blackhawks seem to be getting closer to regaining their championship form.

The Blackhawks vie for a third straight win Saturday night at the United Center in their first meeting with Tampa Bay since Game 6 of last season's Cup Finals.

Chicago's current roster hardly resembles the one that ousted the up-and-coming Lightning in June for its third title in six years, with salary-cap constraints forcing offseason trades of key forwards Brandon Saad, Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg and contributors such as Johnny Oduya, Brad Richards and Antoine Vermette all departing via free agency.

Patrick Kane's ongoing legal problems have presented another challenge, as has Duncan Keith's recent knee surgery that will sideline the top defenseman for 4 to 6 weeks.

Kane's potential distraction hasn't affected his play. The star forward has amassed five goals and five assists through seven games after scoring once and assisting on two goals in Wednesday's 3-2 home win over Florida.

Brent Seabrook also had a goal and two assists as Chicago (4-3-0) successfully handled its first game without Keith, the leader of a defense corps that limited Steven Stamkos to one assist in last season's finals.

'Anytime he's not out there, it's definitely, you miss him,' Seabrook said. 'But, like I said, I think the guys stepped up. They did a good job. The defense did a good job of playing together.'

Artem Anisimov, acquired from Columbus in the Saad deal, scored in a second straight game and is second to Kane with three goals, while rookies Artemi Panarin (8 points) and Viktor Svedberg also have helped soften the blow of the defections.

Tampa Bay (5-2-1) has had periods of inconsistency as well despite retaining the nucleus from last season's team. The Lightning won their first three games, then lost three of four before posting a 4-3 victory Friday at Winnipeg on Ondrej Palat's goal 36 seconds into overtime.

"I think that game turned out pretty much the exact way it should have," Lightning coach Jon Cooper told the NHL's official website. "It should have gone to overtime, and somebody is going to get fortunate."

Victor Hedman registered his third assist on the game-winner and has five in two games. Stamkos has five goals in his last seven but fellow center Tyler Johnson has yet to score after netting 29 goals last season.

Ben Bishop had a season-high 33 saves but allowed at least three goals for the third time in four outings. He's started every game this season and may get the call again Saturday with regular backup Andrei Vasilevskiy still sidelined by a blood clot.

Current backup Kevin Poulin appeared in one game for the New York Islanders last season.

Bishop posted a 2.31 goals-against average in the Cup Finals and stopped 28 shots in a 4-0 home win over the Blackhawks on Feb. 27, avenging Chicago's 3-2 shootout victory at the United Center on Nov. 11.

Tampa Bay faces Corey Crawford for the first time since his 25-save performance in Chicago's 2-0 Game 6 victory, capping an outstanding series in which he compiled a 1.69 GAA and yielded two goals over the final three wins.

Crawford has been sharp as well during the present winning streak, surrendering three goals on 41 shots against Florida and Columbus.

                              • Preview: Blue Jackets (0-8) at Avalanche (2-3)
                                Date: October 24, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Although they remain winless, the Columbus Blue Jackets at least have a heightened sense of optimism now that John Tortorella is in charge.

Mired in the league's second-longest regulation skid to open a season, the visiting Blue Jackets believe there's plenty to build on from Tortorella's debut that could carry over into Saturday night's meeting with the Colorado Avalanche.

Despite a 3-2 loss at Minnesota on Thursday, Tortorella liked the overall spirit and effort from his new team.

"We're (0-8-0); moral victories aren't going to help us right now," Tortorella said. "But for a number of minutes I thought we played hard."

Columbus, which has never dropped nine straight in regulation at any point, owns the worst opening regulation losing streak since the New York Rangers went 0-11-0 in 1943-44.

Coaching his fourth team after replacing the fired Todd Richards on Wednesday, Tortorella has already made his presence felt.

"He's demanding," said forward Nick Foligno, who does not have a point in three straight contests. "You can hear him on the bench. But he's teaching, too. You can hear it. It's going to be a work in progress for all of us, but I liked what I saw."

Columbus overcame an early 1-0 hole against the Wild by closing the first period with goals from Alexander Wennberg and Brandon Dubinsky, who also played for Tortorella with the Rangers. However, Minnesota scored twice in the second then held on despite recording just four shots in the final period.

After sitting the previous two games, Sergei Bobrovsky made 20 saves to help the Blue Jackets yield their fewest goals of the season.

"I'm not down about it," Tortorella told the team's official website. "We're 0-8 and we need to find a way to get a win, but I thought we took a step in the right direction to what we have to do to try to get ourselves out of this."

Columbus won 4-3 at Colorado on Jan 4 while splitting last season's two meetings. Dubinsky scored twice in that contest.

The Avalanche (2-3-1) have scored once while dropping back-to-back one-goal decisions, and are 1 for 12 on the power play in the last three games after going 5 for 10 in the first three. Colorado has remained competitive thanks to a unit that's killed all 16 penalties over the last four contests.

"I think if we play like this (defensively), we're going to win our share of games," coach Patrick Roy told the Avalanche's official website following Wednesday's 1-0 overtime loss to Carolina. "The offense will be taken care of. I'm confident that our guys will find the back of the net."

Roy also might have regained some confidence in Semyon Varlamov, who made 18 saves Wednesday. The veteran goaltender sat the previous two games after allowing 13 goals while losing two of the first three contests.

Though Varlamov struggled in the January loss to the Blue Jackets, he stopped 44 shots in a 4-0 victory at Columbus on March 7.

Jarome Iginla had a goal in each meeting with the Blue Jackets last season.

Colorado defenseman Tyson Barrie has eight assists in his last six games against Columbus, but will sit while serving the final of his three-game suspension for a hit on Anaheim's Simon Despres last week.
