Lightning's Drouin gains confidence on Stamkos line

TAMPA -- When Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Jonathan Drouin entered training camp last month, he wanted to put a rocky rookie season behind him.

Drouin, the No. 3 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, missed all of camp last season with a fractured thumb and started 2014-15 with a weekend's worth of rehab games for Syracuse of the American Hockey League before joining the Lightning in mid-October.

Despite playing 70 regular-season games and six in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Drouin didn't seem to fit in to the plans of coach Jon Cooper. Drouin had four goals and 28 assists but couldn't find a consistent line and was on the bench more times than not during the postseason.

"There were a lot of things going on last season, but I learned a lot from this team and this coaching staff," Drouin said. "Everyone's going to say that when you're in not in the lineup it's frustrating, but it was a good team last year and we were winning with the lineup we had. You always want to be in the lineup to help the team, but that wasn't my decision, so I just had to be ready when I got in."

Drouin spent much of the offseason making sure that he would not have a repeat of last year. The 20-year-old went to Montreal and worked on his strength and conditioning. Drouin came into training camp at full health and has looked promising; he led the Lightning with eight points (four goals and four assists) in their seven preseason games.
"He's looked confident with the puck," Cooper said. "He's got wonderful skills and it's a lot of fun to watch."

Cooper said many of Drouin's struggles last season came from his youth and making the jump from Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to the NHL.

"Things were going pretty fast around him [last year]," Cooper said. "This is not an easy league. It seems like he has come back on a little bit of a mission and it's good to see."

Drouin has been given more responsibility. He is expected to be a major part of the Lightning power play this season as Cooper and new assistant coach Brad Lauer work to make that unit more productive.

Drouin also has played with captain Steven Stamkos for much of camp and likely will start the season on the top line. Last season, Stamkos scored 43 goals without much consistency on his line. Drouin considers himself a pass-first player (he had 79 assists in 46 games in his final season with Halifax) and said he hopes to be the playmaking wing Stamkos is looking for.

"[Stamkos] is a great teammate and a great leader, that's why he's got the 'C'," Drouin said. "He brings that tremendous work ethic to the rink and he's one of the top players in the game. I know if I put the passes where they are supposed to be, there's a very good chance he's going to put it in the back of the net."

With expectations surrounding the Lightning growing as the Oct. 8 season opener against the Philadelphia Flyers approaches -- Tampa Bay is ranked No. 1 in the NHL.com preseason Super 16 -- Drouin said he doesn't feel any additional pressure.

"I feel more confident in the system and what I need to do," Drouin said. "I'm much more ready for this season as compared to last year when I wasn't doing very much because of the injury. This year I know I'll be in a position to help the team immediately."

Drouin said he models his game after Peter Forsberg, who won the Stanley Cup twice with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996 and 2001 and the Hart Trophy in the 2002-03 season.

Drouin loves to be the set-up man even though the coaches have asked him to take more shots. He said the biggest adjustment in his jump from junior to the NHL was dealing with the strength and physicality of professional players.

"It was a major change because I was one of the older guys in the juniors and you go to the NHL where guys are in their 20s and 30s and a lot stronger," Drouin (5-foot-11, 188 pounds) said. "But I've seen a lot and learned a lot. I feel like I've done what I needed to do to prepare for this season."

Wide-open race for Blackhawks' crown as NHL season begins
Stanley Cup race appears wide open

(AP) -- After the Chicago Blackhawks raised the Stanley Cup on home ice in June to celebrate their third title in six years, they spent the summer figuring out how to pay for it.
That meant making significant changes, including the departures of several key players.
That also left the Stanley Cup race remarkably wide-open.

The league has no overwhelming favorite when play begins Wednesday night with four games. Seemingly half of the NHL's teams have legitimate hopes of being the next to raise the Cup in a league that's financially healthy, remarkably competitive and ready for a busy winter.

"No team can live on what they did in the past," said Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown, whose Kings missed the playoffs last spring after winning the Cup in 2014. "You always have a new challenge at this time of the year, and everybody has it this season."

Chicago is the closest thing to a modern NHL dynasty after its lengthy run of excellence, but the Blackhawks will have to do it again without Patrick Sharp, Brandon Saad, Johnny Oduya, Antoine Vermette, Brad Richards and a handful of other contributors. Patrick Kane will be in uniform - and he'll even have a bobblehead night Jan. 24 - while he is under investigation for an alleged sexual assault.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville plans to lean on Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and his other veteran leaders to get through this transition period with a chance to repeat.
"It's what we're bred to do. It's what we're all about," Quenneville said. "You get to this level, or at any level, I think you want to win every shift, you want to win the game, you want to be productive, you want to contribute in a meaningful way, in a positive way. Nothing better than winning."

The Anaheim Ducks are a popular preseason pick for their franchise's second title after taking the Blackhawks to the seven-game limit in the Western Conference finals. Coach Bruce Boudreau's squad is loaded with an enviable mix of veteran excellence and young talent, but has been knocked out of the last two postseasons by the eventual Stanley Cup champion.

While the West still appears to be the superior conference with St. Louis, Los Angeles and hard-charging Calgary and Winnipeg in the mix, the Eastern Conference could finally break through next summer after losing seven of the last nine Stanley Cup Final series.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are widely considered the favorite to defend their East title after making few changes to an impressive squad. Washington, Montreal and the New York Islanders all are title contenders, while returning powers like the New York Rangers will look to stay in the race.

"There's no guarantee that you will keep your spot," Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. "It's hard to get there, and it might be harder to stay there. It keeps everyone on their toes."

While the NHL's veterans look to grab the ring, hockey's two most intriguing teenage talents in the past several years will begin their push to the top with struggling franchises.

No. 1 overall pick Connor McDavid makes his long-anticipated NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers in St. Louis on Thursday, the same night that No. 2 pick Jack Eichel debuts with the Buffalo Sabres at home against Ottawa.
Here are some more things to watch when the NHL season begins this week:

    3 ON 3

For the first time, NHL overtimes will feature 3-on-3 play. Preseason tests have demonstrated the thrill of unleashing NHL scoring talent in this format, which is all but certain to reduce the number of shootouts dramatically, essentially trading in one non-traditional strategy of avoiding ties for another.

    THROW THE FLAG

The NHL will allow coaches to challenge rulings on the ice for the first time. Defending teams can ask for offside calls after a goal is scored, or a team that believes it got the puck into the net can ask for a review of a no-goal call. Both teams can ask for a review of goalie interference, as long as the team has retained its timeout. The Kings are among the teams that plan to have an iPad near the sticks on the bench to help them determine whether to challenge calls.

    NEW BOSS

Mike Babcock will be the NHL's most scrutinized coach after accepting an eight-year, $50 million contract to leave Detroit for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who haven't won a playoff round or finished higher than third in their division since 2004. No coach has more international respect than the longtime Canadian Olympic boss, but fixing this legendarily underachieving marquee franchise is the biggest challenge of his career.

    NEW TEAMS

The NHL continues to move toward expansion to Las Vegas and Quebec City, although recent comments by Boston owner Jeremy Jacobs cast doubt on the league's willingness to do it quickly. It's tough to imagine the NHL owners passing on $1 billion in expansion fees, but we should find out during this season whether the NHL will have new teams two years from now.

    EMPTY YOUR POCKETS

Fans at all 30 NHL arenas - including Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Islanders' new home - will have to pass through metal detectors. Some buildings already had the security measure in place, but others expect longer lines until fans and arena employees get used to the new procedures.

Eight potential breakout players in 2015-16

One year ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning were hoping forward Nikita Kucherov could have a breakout season, prove his skill could translate in the NHL, that he was worth the tough love he was shown during his rookie season of 2013-14.

At the same time, the Calgary Flames were hoping center Sean Monahan could build on his strong rookie season to bust out in a big way, and the Detroit Red Wings were banking on Tomas Tatar to become a go-to scorer in his second full season.

        All three answered.

There will be more players like Kucherov, Monahan and Tatar this season. Who will they be? Who will be the breakout performers of the 2015-16 season?

Here are eight possibilities, in alphabetical order, with the qualifiers that they have played in the NHL but have 200 or fewer games and have never scored 50 or more points in a season:

        JONATHAN DROUIN, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Last season: 4-28-32 in 70 games

        Career: 4-28-32 in 70 games

The game looked like it was starting to slow down for Drouin during the preseason, and he started to look like a legitimate top-six forward primed for a big season. Lightning coach Jon Cooper, who scratched Drouin for 20 of Tampa Bay's 26 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring, has offered effusive praise of the 20-year-old forward throughout training camp, telling the Tampa Bay Times last week that he has "come back on a little bit of a mission, and it's good to see."

Drouin will likely start the season playing alongside center Steven Stamkos, which should undoubtedly benefit him. Most important, Drouin was playing with confidence, almost as if he were back in junior hockey, during the preseason. If that carries over to the regular season, he could be in line for a big season, similar to Kucherov in 2014-15.

        MATT DUMBA, MINNESOTA WILD

Last season: 8-8-16 in 58 games

        Career: 9-9-18 in 71 games

Like his team, Dumba, the No. 7 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, had a strong second half last season. The 21-year-old defenseman had 12 points, including seven goals, in Minnesota's final 38 games after spending six weeks in the American Hockey League.

Dumba is expected to play a bigger role on the Wild's improving defense from the start this season. He should be in the top four, possibly paired with Jonas Brodin, playing upwards of 17-18 minutes per game; more if the Wild want to reduce the workload on Ryan Suter.

        ALEX GALCHENYUK, MONTREAL CANADIENS

Last season: 20-26-46 in 80 games

        Career: 42-62-104 in 193 games

Galchenyuk is finally getting to play his natural position this season, his fourth in the NHL. He'll start at center, likely on the second line between Alexander Semin and Lars Eller. Given the opportunity to play in his comfort zone, with a healthy Semin, and on the power play, should give Galchenyuk the opportunity to approach or crack 60 points.

He should show the Canadiens, if he didn't already in the preseason, that he is a strong two-way center who is in control when he has the puck and capable of keeping it in the offensive end. He might prove that he is their future No. 1 center.

        CHRIS KREIDER, NEW YORK RANGERS

Last season: 21-25-46 in 80 games

        Career: 40-46-86 in 169 games

Kreider showed signs of starting to break out last season, when he found his niche as a power forward. His play away from the puck improved. His play on the boards improved. He shot the puck more (2.25 shots per game, up from 2.06 per game in 2013-14).
All of that has led to Rangers coach Alain Vigneault raising his expectations for Kreider this season. Vigneault said at the start of training camp that he thinks Kreider can be a dominant power forward and an elite player in the NHL. The feeling around the Rangers is that Kreider can be a 30-30 guy this season, as in 30 goals and 30 assists.

        EVGENY KUZNETSOV, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Last season: 11-26-37 in 80 games

        Career: 14-32-46 in 97 games

Kuznetsov had a strong second half to his rookie season in 2014-15 and established himself as Washington's second-line center behind Nicklas Backstrom. He had five goals and seven points in 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games after scoring five goals and 13 points in the Capitals' final 17 regular-season games.

Kuznetsov will get ice time with Alex Ovechkin on the top line and top power-play unit early in the season, until Backstrom is able to get up to speed after hip surgery that's expected to keep him out for at least a few games. Coach Barry Trotz's goal for Kuznetsov is for him to start this season the way he finished last season. He'll get the chance to do more. He has the ability to do more.

        JAKOB SILFVERBERG, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Last season: 13-26-39 in 81 games

        Career: 33-48-81 in 181 games

Silfverberg should have the ability to build off of his strong postseason, when he had 18 points, including 14 assists, in 16 games playing on the Ducks' second line alongside Ryan Kesler. The Ducks are banking on Silfverberg and Kesler being their second scoring duo behind Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

Silfverberg has taken on a proper progression of building up his production and his value to his team in each of his first three NHL seasons. Now he is going to be put in a prime role and should be able to break the 50-point barrier with ease if he stays healthy and continues to feed off of Kesler's hard-edge, two-way game.

        TEUVO TERAVAINEN, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

Last season: 4-5-9 in 34 games

        Career: 4-5-9 in 37 games

The departures of Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp open the door for Teravainen to play a bigger role on the Blackhawks this season. The team feels he's ready.

Teravainen, 21, had 10 points in 18 playoff games and helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup for the third time in six seasons. He can play on the wing or at center, and is likely to start the season as the third-line center behind No. 1 Jonathan Toews and No. 2 Artem Anisimov. But don't be shocked if Teravainen quickly becomes a first- or second-line left wing.

        MIKA ZIBANEJAD, OTTAWA SENATORS

Last season: 20-26-46 in 80 games

        Career: 43-57-100 in 200 games

Zibanejad's production went up under coach Dave Cameron after he took over for Paul MacLean on Dec. 8 (0.60 points per game in 55 games under Cameron, 0.52 PPG in 25 games under MacLean). He also went from averaging a shade over 15 minutes per game under MacLean to nearly 17 minutes per game under Cameron, and blossomed as the second-line center playing with Bobby Ryan and Mike Hoffman.

This season, Zibanejad plans to get a little more selfish. He told the Ottawa Sun at the start of training camp that one of his goals is to shoot more. He averaged 1.875 shots on goal per game last season and had 14 games without a shot altogether. There were 51 centers in the League who took more shots on goal than Zibanejad last season, including fellow second-line centers Ryan Kesler (205), Jason Spezza (204) and Tyler Johnson (203).

Opening week has Babcock, Kessel, McDavid debut

The 2015-16 NHL season gets underway Wednesday with four games, including two Original Six matchups.

This week, seven coaches will debut with a new team, a potential generational type player will play his first NHL game, and a second team arrives within New York City limits.

Here are games that should garner plenty of attention:

Wednesday, Oct. 7: Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m. ET; SN, TVA Sports) -- After 10 years with the Detroit Red Wings, coach Mike Babcock accepts the challenge of reshaping the Maple Leafs, who were 27th in the NHL standings last season. Babcock signed an eight-year contract reportedly worth $50 million with Toronto on May 20. With a record of 458-223-105, he is the Red Wings' all-time leader in wins, and Detroit made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of his 10 seasons.

"We're an Original Six franchise that doesn't hold our rightful place in the National Hockey League right now," Babcock told the Toronto Sun. "We will."
Wednesday, Oct. 7: New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN) -- The Blackhawks will raise their third Stanley Cup championship banner in the past six seasons, then begin their title defense against the 2014-15 Presidents' Trophy winners. Chicago won't have forwards Brandon Saad (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Patrick Sharp (Dallas Stars), who were traded in the offseason for salary-cap reasons. The Blackhawks are trying to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Red Wings (1997, 1998).

"I think there's plenty of talent," forward Marian Hossa. "We lost so many key members of our team from the last year, but on the plus side, we've got lots of great young players coming in to give us lots of enthusiasm and energy, which could be our motor."

Thursday, Oct. 8: Edmonton Oilers at St. Louis Blues (8 p.m. ET; SN360, FS-MW) -- All eyes have been on center Connor McDavid since he played his first game with Erie of the Ontario Hockey League as a 15-year-old in the fall of 2012. After being the No. 1 pick at the 2015 NHL Draft, McDavid is set to make his NHL debut. He had 120 points in 47 games for Erie last season.

"I'm just worried about each and every day here trying to get better and prove to the coaching staff and management team what I'm all about and making sure I'm earning their trust," McDavid said, according to The Canadian Press.

Friday, Oct. 9: Chicago Blackhawks at New York Islanders (7:30 p.m. ET; NHLN, CSN-CH, MSG+) -- The Islanders play their first regular-season game at Barclays Center after calling Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum home for 43 years. A ceremony will precede the start of the game that will likely feature many special guests.

"I just want the puck to drop. Ceremonies aren't for me," Islanders captain John Tavares said. "You've been waiting all summer to play. We just want to get to what we do best, and that's playing and competing. I think it's a great way to open up the year; the defending Cup champs, on a back-to-back. We're going to have to be ready. It's a great challenge, and we should really accept that and look to thrive off of it."

Saturday, Oct. 10: Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks (10:30 p.m. ET; PRIME, FS-SD, CSN-CA) -- The Ducks, predicted by many to represent the Western Conference in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, open the season against the Sharks and new coach Peter DeBoer. Expectations are high in Anaheim after general manager Bob Murray bolstered the lineup with the additions of forward Carl Hagelin and defenseman Kevin Bieksa.

It appears Ducks forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are going to start the season on separate lines. Getzlaf has been skating with Hagelin and newcomer Chris Stewart, and Perry with Rickard Rakell and Jiri Sekac.

"We obviously want to see if it works out," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said, according to The Orange County Register. "If it doesn't, we know what we can do. It's not a secret."

          PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jack Eichel, Buffalo Sabres -- The second player selected at the 2015 draft may not put up as many points as McDavid will in Edmonton, but he could have a similar impact in Buffalo. Eichel, who had 71 points in 40 games for Boston University last season, wowed Sabres fans with his offensive abilities during the preseason and is projected to be the second-line center. Eichel will make his NHL debut on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators at First Niagara Center.

Phil Kessel, Pittsburgh Penguins -- Kessel brings his 247 career NHL goals to Pittsburgh after being traded from Toronto on July 1. Never before has Kessel played with a center as talented as Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, so it will be interesting to see if he scores 40 goals for the first time this season. Kessel makes his Penguins debut Thursday at the Dallas Stars.

Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets -- Saad, who turns 23 on Oct. 27, has a new home after winning the Stanley Cup twice in three seasons with the Blackhawks. His numbers improved in each of those seasons, a trend that is likely to continue with Saad penciled to skate on the Blue Jackets' top line with Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno. Columbus hosts the New York Rangers on Friday.

          FANTASY FOCUS

Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers -- He had two goals in 37 games last season, but it appears Draisaitl will get the first crack with McDavid and Taylor Hall on Edmonton's top line while right wing Jordan Eberle recovers from a shoulder injury. If you feel like you need another forward on your fantasy team, Draisaitl should be considered if he's available.

Patrick Sharp, Dallas Stars -- Sharp went from 34 goals in 2013-14 to 16 last season in Chicago, but the move to Dallas could rejuvenate the 33-year-old. He likely enters the season skating on the Stars' top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, so Sharp gets an early opportunity to begin a bounce-back season.

Ryan Strome, New York Islanders -- Some wondered why Islanders general manager Garth Snow wasn't more aggressive when Metropolitan Division opponents such as Pittsburgh and Columbus were strengthening their lineup during the offseason, but that's probably because of the faith Snow has in his younger players, particularly Strome. The fifth player selected at the 2011 draft had 50 points in his first full NHL season and is likely to start the season on the top line alongside Tavares. Expect a jump in every offensive category from the 22-year-old.

          POINT SHOTS

This is an important season for the Islanders, who blew an opportunity to have home-ice advantage in the Eastern Conference First Round of the 2015 playoffs and ultimately lost to the Washington Capitals in seven games. "It's time for us to take that next step," Islanders forward Matt Martin told NHL.com. "The thing we did last year was kind of take it one game at a time. We have a lot of veteran leadership with the additions of [Johnny] Boychuk and [Nick] Leddy, who's a young guy but obviously won a Stanley Cup. They really stressed just taking it day by day. You don't want to look too far ahead, you don't want to look to the playoffs, you just want to focus on the next game, focus on the details, get two points and move on to the next game. But it is a big year for us, a year that I think we can go a long way if we do what we need to." … Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was 4-0-0 in the preseason with a 1.36 goals-against average and .959 save percentage. … Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin scored four goals in the preseason and found chemistry with Steven Stamkos. … The Blues likely are opting to give 2014 first-round pick Robby Fabbri an audition before deciding to keep him or return him to Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League, where he had 51 points in 30 games last season. Fabbri, 19, skated with Jori Lehtera and Jaden Schwartz at practice Sunday. "There's a really good chance we're going to use the nine games to take a look and see," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We think he can compete at this level."

Puck drops on NHL betting. Do you know what to watch for?

The Kings allowed just eight goals through six preseason games, going 4-2 with both losses coming in 2-1 contests.

Team to bet: Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles is known for its miserly blueline and solid goaltending, and that held true in the preseason. The Kings allowed just eight goals through six games, going 4-2 with both losses coming in 2-1 contests – one of which in overtime. Los Angeles blanked the Colorado Avalanche in the final tuneup game, in Las Vegas of all places, with a shutout from goalie Jonathan Quick.

The Kings have always had a tough time complementing that stout defense with scoring, but showed flashes of offensive brilliance this preseason. They netted eight goals in two games with the Arizona Coyotes and scored four in the preseason finale versus Colorado. With Milan Lucic stepping into the hole left by Justin Williams, L.A. could come out firing to start the season. The Kings open the schedule with a five-game home stand after going 25-9-4-3 inside the Staples Center last season for the fourth-best home record in the NHL. It starts versus San Jose Wednesday.

            Team to fade: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins always come into each season with a surplus of pomp and circumstance, even more so in 2015 with the addition of forward Phil Kessel from Toronto. Pittsburgh already has plenty of firepower with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, at least in the regular season, and working Kessel into the flow may take some time. The Pens stumbled in the preseason, finishing 3-5 while scoring just 20 total goals in those eight games, three coming from Kessel who also added an assist.

Pittsburgh will earn some pricey moneyline odds in the early going with all the offseason buzz, but the value could be on the other side. The Penguins hit the road for the first two games, heading West to play Dallas and Arizona. Then travel home for Montreal and Ottawa (two playoff teams) and then a showdown with Kessel’s former club, the Maple Leafs, on October 17. There could be some chemistry issues early on, and the offense could suffer because of it.

            Total to watch: Minnesota Wild

The Wild were a dominant Under bet last season, finishing the season 30-38 on the season but really turned the corner following the acquisition of goaltender Devan Dubnyk from Arizona in mid-January. He was outstanding behind Minnesota’s solid blueline, posting a 24-9-2 record, 1.78 GAA and finishing with a 9-11-11 O/U record in his time with the Wild.

Now, entering his first full season behind the pipes in Minnesota, Dubnyk leads what could be the tightest defense in the entire NHL. The Wild looked good in the preseason, winning four of their six games and allowing just 10 total goals in those warmups. Minnesota drops the puck on the 2015 season at Colorado, then is home to St. Louis briefly before playing on the road at Arizona, Los Angeles and Anaheim. Each of those opponents, save for St. Louis, played Under more than Over last year.

            Injury to note

            Zdeno Chara, D Boston Bruins

You never want to enter a new season with your best player and team captain in the stands. Chara injured his lower body in late September and was officially put on the injured reserve by the Bruins Monday night. But because the injury was a while back, he’s listed retroactively and is actually available to come back, if he’s healthy.

Chara was skating and shooting in practice but Boston may play it cool with the star defenseman this early in the season. The Bruins have three straight home games to open the schedule, hosting Winnipeg, Montreal and Tampa Bay. His absence will be felt if he misses time against those challenging teams.

            Playbook

The Detroit Red Wings are working in new head coach Jeff Blashill after 10 seasons under Mike Babcock. For most franchises, this would be a major adjustment and take some time to set in, as the coach gets to know his players and vice versa.

However, growing pains will be at a minimum for Blashill and the Wings, as he served under Babcock as an assistant for the 2011-12 season and more importantly was head coach of Detroit’s AHL farm team in Grand Rapids the last three years. He knows a good majority of the current players on the roster and that familiarity showed in the preseason, with the Red Wings going 6-0-2, scoring 33 goals to 17 against for an exhibition best plus-16 goal differential.

Puck drops on NHL betting. Do you know what to watch for?

The puck drops on the 2015-16 NHL season Wednesday. Each week, Covers Expert Scott Rickenbach will break down the teams to watch – good and bad – from a betting standpoint.

The Bolts stand pat with their roster, hoping this group can continue its high level of play and get back to the final. As long as Steve Stamkos is finding the back of the net, Tampa Bay will always have a chance.

The Ducks know time isn’t on their side when it comes to another Stanley Cup push. Anaheim added Carl Hagelin to go along with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, but their goaltending situation may be their undoing again.

The defending champs are the odds on favorite to win the Cup again – but we’re not totally convinced. They dealt Patrick Sharp to Dallas but have plenty in reserve. The big issue is Patrick Kane’s off-ice problems and how much that will impact the franchise.

Capitals' Backstrom likely to miss 4-5 games

Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is expected to miss the first few games of the NHL regular season as he continues to recover from hip surgery.

On Tuesday, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said the Capitals initially thought Backstrom could miss anywhere from zero to 10 games.

"Now it seems to be four or five games," MacLellan said, according to NHL.com. "There's still uncertainty there, but it looks like he's progressing well."

Coach Barry Trotz told the Washington Post that Backstrom will visit his surgeon next week, at which time the team will get a better idea of when Backstrom might return.

Backstrom led the league with 60 assists last season. He also had 18 goals while playing 82 games.

The Capitals open their regular season on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils.

Penguins' Dupuis out at least a month

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Tuesday that forward Pascal Dupuis will miss four to five weeks with a lower-body injury unrelated to a blood clot that forced him to miss most of last season.

Dupuis, 36, was injured late in practice Sunday, according to the team website.

"Most of us thought it didn't look too bad," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. "On further examination, we found out different.

"We'll see how he is. Right now it's frustrating for him, he'll be fine in a couple of days. You know how he is. He's got lots of energy and focus. He'll be determined to get back as soon as he can."

Also Tuesday, the Penguins recalled forward Oskar Sundqvist from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and assigned defenseman Olli Maatta to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Both are salary-cap moves, and Maatta is expected to be in the Pittsburgh lineup Thursday when the Penguins open their season at Dallas. It is unclear if Sundqvist will take Dupuis' roster spot or if the team will make another move by Thursday.
