        Tuesday, November 18

Blue Jackets C Ryan Johansen, questionable Tuesday

Johansen is questionable to play Tuesday against the Red Wings due to an undisclosed injury.

Lowly Sabres look to knock off Sharks once again

The Buffalo Sabres' struggles this season have been well documented, but they'll look to act as David once again when they face Goliath Tuesday.

On Oct. 25, Buffalo took down the high-flying San Jose Sharks at home. The Sabres were huge underdogs for the contest (+355 on the moneyline).

They'll host the Sharks once again in Western New York on a night full of NHL action. Oddsmakers have Buffalo pegged as +212 home dogs this time around.

Red-hot Blues listed as dogs vs. Bruins

The St. Louis Blues, otherwise known as the hottest team in the NHL, will be in action once again Tuesday.

The Blues - winners of 10 of their last 11 games - travel to Beantown for a date with the Boston Bruins.

Despite that, the Blues are listed as slight +102 road dogs for the affair.

Under bettors profiting in Columbus-Detroit meetings

When the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Detroit Red Wings get together, low totals are the norm.

The Under has gone 5-1 in the last six meetings between the two clubs. They'll renew acquaintances Tuesday in Ohio.

Columbus enters the game on an a losing skid, dropping nine out of their last 11 matchups.

Leafs becoming a favorite for Over bettors

The Toronto Maple Leafs have become a fantastic play for bettors banking on high totals recently, evidenced by the Over going 5-1 in the Leafs' last six outings.

The Leafs welcome Nashville to the Air Canada Centre in NHL action Tuesday. The Preds are presently slight +103 road dogs for the matchup.

Ice cold Rangers look to reverse trend

The slumping New York Rangers are a poor 3-8 in their past 11 games. It has been goaltending and defense that has been the Rangers achilles heel this season, as they team has allowed four or more goals in five of their past 11.

The New York will welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to Madison Square Garden Wednesday.

Blues continue rotation, Allen to start Wednesday

The goalie rotation has been working for the St. Louis Blues so far this season and they are sticking to that. Jake Allen will get the start Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens after Brian Elliott started the previous two.

Since Nov. 1, the Blues have been alternating goalies with each one getting two starts at a time.

            Allen is 5-1 with a 1.67 GAA and a .933 SV% this season.

Oilers offense stymied by Canucks defense

The Edmonton Oilers have had a time trying to top the Vancouver Canucks. Over the past eight contests, four of which were this season, the Oilers are 2-6.

Though the overall score during that period looks close, 26-18 for the Canucks, but Edmonton has scored two goals or less in five of those eight contests.

NHL roundup: Penguins' Dupuis has blood clot

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung and will be out of the lineup for at least six months while undergoing treatment with blood thinners.

The clot was identified during testing Monday after Dupuis had complained of discomfort in his chest.

Dupuis, 35, previously was diagnosed with a blood clot in January 2014, shortly after he suffered torn ligaments in his knee. He was on blood thinners for six months while also recovering from surgery and rehabilitating his knee. Preview: Islanders (12-6) at Penguins (13-3)

                                Date: November 21, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Not only did Pascal Dupuis produce on the ice, his veteran leadership also had a big impact for Pittsburgh beyond the playing surface.

While losing him for the rest of the season - and possibly longer - will no doubt have its effect on the Penguins, they've been in similar situations before.

Pittsburgh needs to refocus quickly as it begins a home-and-home set against the surging New York Islanders on Friday night.

Dupuis had six goals and five assists for first-place Pittsburgh (13-3-1) in the midst of a successful return after tearing his ACL and MCL in December.

On Monday, one day before the Penguins won 4-0 at Montreal, the 35-year-old stayed in Pittsburgh for tests after experiencing chest pains. Doctors then discovered a blood clot in Dupuis' lungs, ending his season and putting his career in jeopardy.

"It's not a great situation to be in, but that's the card that I've been dealt," the married father of four said. "Hockey is definitely second on my mind right now."

While his presence on the ice certainly will be missed, his teammates are equally saddened by the void left in other situations.

"(The locker room is) where you really miss him," forward Chris Kunitz said. "The guy on the plane and hanging out at dinners ... that's the friendship part of what Duper brings to the team."

This isn't the first time the Penguins have had to overcome adversity in the form of a serious health situation with a teammate.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun was diagnosed with a blood clot in September 2013 and missed all of last season, and defenseman Kris Letang suffered a stroke in January.

Defenseman Olli Maatta had a cancerous tumor surgically removed from his neck two weeks ago and missed six games before returning against the Canadiens.

"With things that we've been through in the past, we're kind of experienced dealing with things as a team," said Sidney Crosby, who missed chunks of time from 2010-12 with concussions. "You hate to see anybody go through that, but (especially) a teammate and someone I've gotten to know over the years."

The Penguins, winners of three straight, will have to contain their emotions as they prepare to face an Islanders team nipping at their heels in the Metropolitan Division.

New York (12-6-0) has won 12 of its first 18 for the first time since starting 13-4-1 in 1987-88 after beating Tampa Bay 5-2 on Tuesday. It allowed the first goal for the third straight contest, but it improved to 5-1-0 when giving up the initial score.

"We're showing that we can play with the top teams in this league," coach Jack Capuano said. "Our guys are working hard and stepping up."

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, tying him with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo for the team lead with 18 points.

"We're doing many good things on the ice as a group," Tavares said.

New York led after the first period in the first meeting with the Penguins on Oct. 18 but fell 3-1, its fourth straight defeat in the series. The Islanders host the Penguins on Saturday night to complete the set.

"You treat these back-to-back series like a playoff series," Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston said. "You prepare for a team, play a game, then react to how you played and what you need to do that next day. It gives us a chance to simulate playoff action."

Johnston said Marc-Andre Fleury and backup Thomas Greiss each would start against the Islanders, but didn't specify which game. Fleury will have a chance to become the 31st goaltender in NHL history with 300 victories when he makes his next start.

New York also is expected to start both Jaroslav Halak and backup Chad Johnson. Halak has won five straight starts with a 1.37 goals-against average and two shutouts.
