NHL roundup: Sharks' Roussel fined for punch

Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel was fined $5,376.34 on Monday for punching San Jose Sharks defenseman Justin Braun during Saturday's game.

Roussel was assessed a two-minute penalty for roughing and a 10-minute game misconduct at 18:51 of the third period.

The scuffle started when Roussel knocked down Sharks goalie Alex Stalock while trying to bat the puck out of the zone. That brought out a group of players along the boards. As Braun was being held back by an official, Roussel punched Braun.

The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

---The Detroit Red Wings recalled goaltender Tom McCollum from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and assigned goalie Petr Mrazek to the Griffins, the team announced. McCollum, 24, re-signed with the Red Wings during the offseason after spending the 2013-14 season on an AHL contract.

---The Montreal Canadiens assigned Rene Bourque to Hamilton of the American Hockey League after the veteran forward cleared waivers.

Bourque has two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 games with Montreal this season.

---The Toronto Maple Leafs reassigned center Sam Carrick, left winger Josh Leivo and defenseman Stuart Percy to the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.

---The Calgary Flames recalled forward Max Reinhart from Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League. Reinhart has played in 19 games with Calgary over the past two seasons, registering one goal and four assists.

Center Max Reinhart was in Calgary's lineup for the first time this season on Monday.

---The New York Rangers recalled forward Jesper Fast from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) and assigned defenseman Conor Allen and forward Ryan Malone to Hartford, the team announced.

---Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason was back in the lineup Monday after missing time with an injury.

The Hurricanes called up defenseman Michel Jordan from Charlotte, but he was scratched for what would have been his NHL debut.

---New Jersey Devils left wing Mike Cammalleri returned to the lineup after missing six games with a head injury.

---Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug returned Monday after missing four games with a broken finger.

              Kings to add D McBain

The Los Angeles Kings will sign free agent defenseman Jamie McBain on Tuesday to shore up their blue line.

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi told the Los Angeles Times that the move won't become official until Tuesday because the team needs another day to clear cap room to add McBain to the roster.

The deal will be worth $500,000 for one year.

The Kings were left with five defensemen last weekend because they couldn't call up a player from the minor leagues due to the cap issues. Robyn Regehr is out with an injury and Slava Voynov remains suspended after his arrest earlier this year.

McBain went to training camp with the Arizona Coyotes but didn't land a spot on their roster and was released. He joined the Kings on a pro tryout contract and has played in five games for the Manchester Monarchs in the American Hockey League, scoring one goal and contributing two assists.

Prudential Center has been Wild's kryptonite

The Prudential Center has not been friendly territory for the Minnesota Wild.

The Wild are 1-5-1 SU in their last seven meetings with the New Jersey Devils in the Garden State. They'll face off once again in New Jersey's barn Tuesday.

The line for the game is currently off the board.

Isles cashing Under tickets with ease

The New York Islanders have recently gone on a tear for bettors banking on low totals.

Through Monday, the Under has gone 5-0 in the Isles' last five games. John Tavares' group take on Matt Duchene and the Colorado Avalanche in New York Tuesday.

The Avs are currently +130 road dogs on the moneyline for the contest.

Kessel the key to Maple Leafs success

To say Phil Kessel has meant a lot to the Toronto Maple Leafs this season may be an understatement. The Leafs are 7-1-1 when Kessel has a point this season, but only 1-4-1 when he fails to put a mark on the score sheet.

Kessel, who is tied for third in the NHL in points with 19, was held pointless and had a -2 rating in the previous game against the Bruins this season.

Toronto welcomes the Boston Bruins to the ACC Wednesday.

Sharks put Stalock on IR, recall Grosenick

The San Jose Sharks placed goaltender Alex Stalock on injured reserve and recalled goalie Troy Grosenick from Worcester of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

Stalock, 27, has a lower body injury. He has gone 2-2-1 with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in five games this season.

Grosenick, 25, has gone 7-2-1 with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 10 games played for Worcester. He currently leads the AHL in wins and ranks second in minutes played (616).

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound native of Brookfield, Wis., signed with San Jose as a free agent on April 8, 2013.

Bruins say starting goalie game-time decision

The Boston Bruins have announced that they will not announce their starting goalie until game-time Wednesday.

Starting goaltender Tukka Rask played Tuesday and has also played the last four straight for the Bruins. Rask has a 2.44 GAA with a .909 SV% this season while backup Niklas Svedberg has a 1.66 GAA and .940 SV%.

The Bruins travel to Toronto to play the Maple Leafs Wednesday.

Zach Parise, Minnesota - Doub Thurs

Parise has been sidelined with a concussion and is unlikely to return for Thursday's game against the Sabres.

Preview: Bruins (10-6) at Maple Leafs (8-5)

                    Date: November 12, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

After a perfect four-game homestand, the Boston Bruins depart TD Garden for the first time this month to a place where they might feel equally comfortable.

The Bruins easily won in Toronto last month and have mostly dominated the Maple Leafs in recent seasons heading into Wednesday night's matchup.

Boston (10-6-0) has won five in a row as the offense has stayed hot following a dreadful five-game start to the season during which it scored six goals. The Bruins have since averaged 3.63 goals, though coach Claude Julien wants to see the upward trend continue.

"We're going to expect more out of our team the whole year," Julien said. "We never get satisfied. I'm happy with the game, and I use that term all the time, but I'm not satisfied. I think there's still areas we continue to work.

Boston dispatched New Jersey 4-2 on Monday night behind a three-point game from Patrice Bergeron and a highlight-reel, go-ahead goal from Seth Griffith.

"We're building every game," center Chris Kelly said. "We're still learning how to play consistently and how to perfect our game. That's all part of playing 82 games, is learning from mistakes and learning from when you've done something well and building on that."

Another key to the homestand was Tuukka Rask allowing seven goals in the four games, a big improvement from an up-and-down October when the reigning Vezina Trophy winner had a 2.82 goals-against average. His best performance that month came in Toronto, making 32 saves in a 4-1 victory Oct. 25.

Rask has won his last four starts there, surrendering three goals, and is 10-2-0 with a 1.57 GAA lifetime against the Maple Leafs. He's a big reason Boston is 12-2-1 in the series since the start of 2011-12, including 6-1-1 in Toronto.

So is Bergeron, who has seven goals and seven assists in the last eight meetings. He had seven points on the homestand after having only five through the first 12 games.

Toronto (8-5-2) has been enjoying a hot spell as well, going 5-1-1 in its last seven.

The Maple Leafs netted five goals on back-to-back nights over the weekend, downing Ottawa 5-3 in their most recent contest Sunday. Peter Holland scored his second goal in as many games and James Reimer made 38 saves.

"It's huge especially with the back-to-back we just had," Holland said. "Anytime you can get two points against a divisional team it's a big win."

The win over the Senators marked only the Leafs' second Atlantic Division victory in six chances this season. They've come from behind in each of their past three wins.

"There've been games where we've gotten down. We just continue to battle and continue to play," winger James van Riemsdyk said. "... We have a tight knit group, and no one really gets too down on each other, or down in general."

Toronto still seeks improvement defensively, having allowed at least three goals in four straight and ranking among the league's worst in shots allowed at 33.3 per game.

"With us, we've always talked that this group can score goals. We got to defend. We got to prevent goals," coach Randy Carlyle said. "That's one of the things we're trying to do. We've played more of a grinding game. We've played more an offensive zone time game. Those are the things we think we'll bring the shot totals down and allow us to form an identity."

Reimer and Jonathan Bernier continue to split time in Toronto's net, though Reimer might be the better option Wednesday with a 1.75 goals-against average in his last six games versus the Bruins. Bernier has a 4.46 lifetime GAA against them and was pulled in the third period of last month's matchup after allowing four goals.

Bruins forward David Krejci will not make the trip to Toronto as he continues to deal with an undisclosed injury.

Preview: Kings (8-4) at Ducks (10-3)

                      Date: November 12, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

The chant of "This is our house!" from Los Angeles Kings fans at Honda Center in May might still haunt any current Anaheim Ducks who experienced it.

Almost five months after their promising season was cut short by the Kings, the Ducks look to get back on track Wednesday night at home in the rematch with their Southern California rivals.

Anaheim allowed eight goals while going 4-0-1 against Los Angeles during the regular season, but its season ended with a 6-2 home loss in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals May 16. The Kings went 3-1 at Anaheim during the series and scored the first five goals of the lopsided final.

It was a bitter end for the Ducks, who set club records with 54 wins and 116 points.

'It was a great season, but any time you lose in the playoffs, it's going to be heartbreaking,' center Ryan Getzlaf said following the clincher. 'And to lose in a Game 7 is even worse.'

The memory of that disheartening playoff exit may be serving as motivation for the Ducks (10-3-3), whose 23 points are the most in the West. Anaheim, however, has stumbled to a 3-2-3 mark in its last eight.

Los Angeles (8-4-3) has gotten off to a streaky start, though it's allowed one regulation goal during each game of a 2-0-1 stretch.

"We've got to continue to get better," defenseman Jake Muzzin said.

The Kings' Jonathan Quick has an 0.97 goals-against average in those three contests after posting a 3.32 GAA in his preceding 0-2-1 span.

A hot Quick doesn't bode well for the Ducks, who have totaled 12 goals in their past eight contests after recording 29 in the first eight.

"That's just the way our goal scoring has gone," said coach Bruce Boudreau, whose team is on a five-game point streak. "The only thing you can do is persevere."

Corey Perry leads the Ducks with 11 goals, but it's uncertain if he'll miss a fourth straight game Wednesday. He's eligible to come off injured reserve after landing there with a viral gland infection, which left him seriously ill and requiring intravenous fluids from a hospital last week. The illness has also hit defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who missed Sunday's 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver.

Both players are being kept away from their teammates with their contagious condition and are undergoing further tests.

Perry recorded a team-high 43 goals and added 39 assists last season. He managed two of each against the Kings during the regular season and same amount in the playoffs.

"We know their personnel pretty well," Muzzin said. "Obviously, Getzlaf, Perry, (Ryan) Kesler, they are big guys. We've got to limit their time and space."

It's uncertain if Anaheim's Cam Fowler (lower body) will be available after he sat out Sunday.

Healed from a leg injury that forced him to miss a game last week, Anaheim's Frederik Andersen made 24 saves Sunday. He has a 1.25 GAA while going 1-0-2 since suffering his only regulation defeat.

Andersen, whose 1.56 GAA ranks among the best in the NHL, went 3-0-0 with a 1.62 GAA against the Kings in the 2013-14 regular season. He allowed a goal on 23 shots before leaving Game 3 of the West semifinals at Los Angeles with a leg injury.

Quick was 3-2-0 with a 2.14 GAA at Anaheim in the regular season and playoffs last season.

Marian Gaborik, who had six goals and four assists against the Ducks in the playoffs, scored his first goal of the season and added an assist in a 5-1 victory over the Canucks last Saturday.

These teams meet again Saturday at Los Angeles.

Odds to win the college basketball national title next spring........

2-1-- Kentucky-- Their second unit would be a top 25 team.

15-1-- Florida, Kansas, North Carolina-- Jayhawks have really young team.

25-1-- Louisville, Texas-- Longhorns were a surprise team last year.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts from the desert....

                        13) What does it say that one of Drew Brees' kids was on the Superdome field after the Saints' game Sunday, wearing a #43 jersey? Think Brees misses Darren Sproles?

                        12) Chiefs' WRs have yet to catch a TD pass this season; every other team's WRs have caught at least three touchdowns.

                        11) Bills have to be sick about losing at home to the Chiefs; in a 17-13 game, they scored two field goals on four trips to the KC red zone. No bueno.

                        10) NFL officials lightened up on the defensive penalties in Week 10, with average of 2.83 first downs via penalty per game last week, down about 1.5 a game from what had been the season average this year.

                        9) Redskins have scored only two TDs on drives of less than 60 yards, least in NFL; Jets and Rams are next with three each. Baltimore (13) has scored the most.

                        8) By way of contrast, 10 of Cleveland's 22 TDs came on drives of less than 60 yards, meaning their defense/special teams are setting the offense up in great shape.

                        7) Odd stat of day: Raiders are 0-9, Houston lost their last 14 games last year, which means that Oakland backup QB Matt Schaub is on a 23-game NFL losing streak.

                        6) Something to follow while watching the Giants this week; the team that won field position this season won all nine Giant games.

                        5) When was last time someone tore the goalposts down after beating Iowa State? Fans at Kansas did last week; thats how awful their football team is. Usually if you lose to Iowa State, your coach starts packing his bags for his next job.

                        4) I told you being a window washer is a bad job; couple guys had to be rescued off the side of a building in New York City, up on 50th floor or so. Not sure how much those guys get paid, but it ain't near enough.

                        3) Victor Martinez re-upped for four years to be the Tigers' DH, good news for Detroit fans and more importantly, for my fantasy baseball team.

                        2) ESPN's NBA pregame show is way better now with Avery Johnson and Jalen Rose as studio analysts. It had been unwatchable the last couple years.

                        1) Denver Nuggets fired George Karl because he always lost in the first round of the playoffs; no such worries anymore- Denver is terrible, losing its last six games of the year, not even covering a spread in any of the six games. Only way they'll watch any playoff games in Denver this season is on TV, where Karl now works.

The Colorado Avalanche have regressed this season to say the least. The Avs have lost five of their past six games and are only 1-8 away from the friendly confines for the Pepsi Center.

Colorado has been outscored 24-13 in their last six and 32-15 when traveling this year.

The Avs take the ice at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers Thursday.

Bruins C David Krejci, questionable Thursday

Krejci has missed the last two games due to a hip injury and is questionable to return Thursday against the Canadiens.

Red Wings better on power play, but not defense

Today has been set aside for special-teams work, a benefit of having a long stretch between games for the Red Wings. Wednesday’s practice was as physical as the Wings have had since they began the season 15 games ago. After losing in a shoot-out to Tampa Bay on Sunday, the Wings don’t play again until Friday, when they host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Ducks RW Corey Perry, questionable Saturday

Perry has been suffering from the mumps and is on injured reserve. He could return Saturday against the Kings.
