I have a buddy that smoked 2+ packs a day for years and years...he had tried everything with no results...finally ended up getting a shot...not an inexpensive proposition as it cost about $500, but he swears by it and quit cold turkey...I play cards with him every Wednesday...will try to get you some more info if you are interested...gl!

Thanks SPARK. You know what really made me wanna quit? Freakin' J.O.H.N.N.Y. Carson. His last couple days in the hospital before he died, he said "Those damn cigarettes." I don't want it to end like that.

I am really sorry for posting again in here but RJ, that is exactly the way my mother went .. last 10 days of her life was in a hospital .. Horrible death .. Could you imagine not being able to breathe?? .... Not fun to watch a love one go through that ... Throw them out buddy .. they are poison ...

I also quit smoking recently, haven't smoked since 12/14. Was smoking pack a day for 20 years. Got tired of the aftertaste, bad breath, anti social and health ramifications. Heard all kind of therapies (couldn't take patch because am susceptable to skin irritation). Doctor and pharmacist suggested Zyban (cost about $100-125/month out of pocket). Didn't want to spend that, and insurance companies wouldn't pay for it. So they both suggested I try and get ************ for Wellbutrin, which is really same thing as Zyban and is usually recommendned for someone who is depressed....fit my bill given withdrawal symptons associated with quiting smoking. After the Zyban ************ was denied by insurance company, submitted ************ for Wellbutrin to fight depression, but insurance company caught on, they knew I was using it to help with the withdrawal symptons. So had doctor fill out form about my suffering "depression" , and bingo, now pay $20/month co-pay for medication. Seems to help, slowly losing urge for cigarettes, and feel happy at same time. Am listing medical info on this below...hope this helps, and hang in there!


DESCRIPTION

ZYBAN (bupropion hydrochloride) Sustained-Release Tablets are a non-nicotine aid to smoking cessation. ZYBAN is chemically unrelated to nicotine or other agents currently used in the treatment of nicotine addiction. Initially developed and marketed as an antidepressant (WELLBUTRIN® [bupropion hydrochloride] Tablets and WELLBUTRIN SR® [bupropion hydrochloride] Sustained-Release Tablets), ZYBAN is also chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, or other known antidepressant agents. Its structure closely resembles that of diethylpropion; it is related to phenylethylamines. It is (±)-1- (3-chlorophenyl)-2-[(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino]-1-propanone hydrochloride. The molecular weight is 276.2. The molecular formula is C13H18ClNO.HCl. Bupropion hydrochloride powder is white, crystalline, and highly soluble in water. It has a bitter taste and produces the sensation of local anesthesia on the oral mucosa. The structural formula is:


ZYBAN is supplied for oral administration as 150-mg (purple), film-coated, sustained-release tablets. Each tablet contains the labeled amount of bupropion hydrochloride and the inactive ingredients carnauba wax, cysteine hydrochloride, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80 and titanium dioxide and is printed with edible black ink. In addition, the 150-mg tablet contains FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake and FD&C Red No. 40 Lake.

Congratulations on wanting to quit. I don't smoke but I am aware of how hard it must be to quit. I don't believe there is an easy solution. If there was I expect everyone would have quit by now.
My mother died at 45 from cancer. I was 21. That was the hardest thing I have ever gone theough. One of the reasons I don't smoke is I saw what it did to her over a 10 year battle. Since then EVERY happy occasion, like my wedding the birth of my children etc., is accompanied by sadness because she is not here to enjoy them with me. I don't smoke because I don't want to increase the chances of my children going through the same thing.
Stay strong and find what will work for you.

my father had lung cancer a few years ago. He was lucky they caught it early enough they only had to remove half his lung. It is tough to quit but when it threatens a loved one it makes the decision easy. good luck.

rj cut the patch in half u might be putting to much nicotine in your body at one time or try something else my wife tried to quit 3 times for us and it gave her headaches cause of the nicotine hahaha your girl doesnt smoke and she would love for u to quit not going to happen buddy u have to want to do it 4 yourself and then u will quit trust me on this one i hope u do it is better 4 u in long run, gl and try that

I quit in '99 after my Left Lung Collapsed and spent 4 miserable days chained to a Friggin' Hospital bed w/ a plastic tube in my CHEST ( don't recommend it ) I smoked for 34yrs and it FINALLY Occurred to me ... Oh "THAT kind of RUIN Your Health " and I've NEVER smoked again.
In 14 days it will be nothing but a memory --- Don't SLIP ---- I used the patch and it worked for me ... the big ones did burn , step down to the next level if you're NOT JONESING... part of it is Oral Fixation ...habit of something from your hand to the ole mouth ...I loved eating Oranges .... YOU WILL KICK IT'S ASS ... YOU KNOW WHY ?

Glad to see your putting down the habit! I'm a respiratory therapist and I'll give you these facts 1 of 10 smokers get lung cancer, 9 of 10 die. Every patient that I personally have dealt with is no longer with us, and it wasn't pretty. Have you ever watched someone choke on their own blood. Take it from me leave cigs alone.

After reading this thread I thank god I NEVER smoked. I've never as much as taken a drag of a cig.

My brother smoked for about 15 years. He quit about a year ago. Cold Turkey.

RJ..... I JUST saw this thread now... i'll help you with quitting if you could help my insomnia........ lol......

My dad, God bless him, very strong willed man... smoked 2 to 3 packs a day, then when he was in his 30's or 40's just decided he was sick of it and he wanted to quit, he threw his last pack down the sewer, 30 years later he could remember the exact intersection, 6th avenue and 43rd or something like that, and that was the end of it.....

What I would have recommended if i saw this.... smoking 1/2 pack a day you should have started with step 2 14mg, step 1 is for people smoking 1 or more packs a day.... that's why side effects too much damn nicotine...... you could use step 2 for 4 to 6 weeks then step 3 for 2 weeks..... and combine it with something else...... you get much better results with 2 methods.... either Zyban with the patch, one 2nd half bet would cover 3 months worth....... or the patch with the gum (if you could stand it) or Commit lozenge is good, you could pop one in your mouth whenever the urge hits.... and taper off your use of the gum....

Also they say a support group or website for people quitting smoking is good.... hey you got us!! And keeping your hands busy... i used to sell a ton of those fake plastic cigarettes... and i hear you have a rather large body part to keep your hands busy for a long time...

And after 12 years you just think of yourself as a smoker... when you look at your mug in the mirror you see a cigarette dangling from your mouth whether or not there is one... You gotta change the way you think of yourself.... tell yourself, I will never smoke again, I, RJeremy am a non-smoker, it's dirty and disgusting and it's not me...... there's a lot of non-smokers out there and I am fucking one of them, that's that! I went all day yesterday WITHOUT the patch at all. It was a pretty miserable day at work, and I even left an hour early to go home and get a patch. Well, I got home, got on the computer, and next thing I knew it was 2 hours later, and I didn't even put it on yet.

Well, I put one on today and I feel fine so far.
