Did you play any of the courses on 17 mile drive? I've played Spyglass and Poppy Hills. Haven't played Pebble yet. At $525 for round, it would take a while justify that much cash for a round. Plus they won't let you play without a caddy. They are $50 plus a tip. I like Poppy a lot. For around $85 for NCGA members, it's a bargain. Just no real good views of the ocean. The one time I played Spyglass, I was playing pretty decent golf. I was around a 9 handicap. I shot like 95 and that was generous. I went into the pro shop afterwards and saw Phil's scorecard which he held the course record with a 62. Made me feel like a pee-on.

The 101 connects with it in certain spots but runs more inland in areas and is much more of a commercial highway. The Pacific Coast Highway is 2 lanes I believe until it connects with the 101 in the few areas that it does. This will give you an idea if you look at the maps on the right. The 1 is much more scenic..

Yea I thought 101 and 1 were the same in the Monterey area(which is where we stayed). We went into Carmel, and did the 17 mile drive through what I call "heaven", then we went to the pro shops at Pebble and ate in the dining room overlooking 18 at Pebble beach. Didn't get to play there, but I will some day. it's on the bucket list. That, and seeing an NBA playoff game. Then we drove down to the Big Sur area and back up to Monterey. I didn't have much time as I was at a work related convention, so I had to go to a couple meetings.

Sorry, Kaz. This Okie will be in San Diego later this month. Shouldn't be any trouble for you though since you're several hundred miles north. that area you've been talking about though is really beautiful... Monterey to Big Sur. let me ask you... Have you ever been to a place up around the NAPA Valley called Harbin Hot Springs?

Unless there is free stuff in Harbin Hot Springs, Kaz hasn't been there.

The reason Kaz's nose is so big, air is free, so he inhales as much as he can.

                  • Garth, Play golf at the Barona Golf course and go to the casino there. Golf course is decent, but the Casino is "The nicest Casino in America" and it's true. I had $ 25 on the pass line, after the point I normally bet the odds, anyway, guy throws a 9 as his point, I wasn't paying attention and he threw another 9. I said "shit" pit boss asks me, what would you have bet on the odds? I said $50.00 (actually I said 50K, they didn't believe me) anyway, they paid me for the 9 and the odds. unreal. And try the heart attack burger in the café. 1 pound hamburger with tons of cheese and lots of bacon. Pretty good.

Of course I took a picture.

                    • The other place we played was Torry pines, I thought it was a shit hole, and Aviara at four seasons up the coast a bit. That place is fantastic. Have a good trip.

                        • Been to Barona many times and will be there for a day or 2 this trip. I usually spend my time at a double deck blackjack table there. I have played the golf course. It's nice. Pretty tough for a duffer like me. The buffet, the steakhouse, and the burger joint there are all awesome! Only problem I have with Barona is that they don't serve any alcohol on the casino floor. First time I went I tried to order a martini at the table and everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

Yeah. On my bucket list too. My brother plays Pebble at least once a year, the bastard. He goes during that time they reduce the rate in the spring. It's actually a good time to go. Right after the pro am and spring time in heaven. And there's a half dozen courses in the area that are somewhat reasonable in price to play. A couple of muni's which are as good as most private courses.

                              Thanks for the warning!

I'm more centrally located. Nowhere near that kind of beauty. Although I can make it to Yosemite and the Giant Sequoias in an hour or two. Yosemite is worth the visit. It's definitely God's country....

I think they have a rule about how many beers you can buy on the golf course too. Only 2 on the second nine? Something like that. But it saved me quite a bit of money by having to leave the craps table to go have a couple drinks.
