EXACTLY. He plays on the Yankees, poses for billboards and dives into the stands, this alone wins him awards.

The AL Gold Glove winners were announced though today and the ONLY player i REALLY had a problem with was Jeter winning at SS. I remember guys here before saying based on stats and stuff, he was one of the worst Shortstop's defensively in baseball. Did he deserve to Win the Gold Glove today and is he the Best defensive SS in the American League?
First, I'll preface my post with I was surprised that Jeter won. That being said statistically, Jeter is better than he's given credit. A few months ago I posted his defensive stats are equal or slightly better than some of the better well known defensive shortstops.

Secondly, with age Jeter's defensive stats have improved.

He wins awards because he's Derek Jeter.
I will admit I was surprise to learn this is Jeter's 4th GG.

Jeter's stats amazingly improved a lot in 2004 when another gold glover came to play next to him. Your range and zone improve a lot when you have a lot more help and a lot less ground to cover.

Look at Jeter's stats in '04 (his first GG), it's a joke how he won.
He averaged 3.75 chances per game. He had 8 errors. He led the league in fielding%. Eight errors for a SS is pretty impressive.

Range makes one slow. It doesn't make one a bad fielder. How often does range come into play? Once or twice each week? OK so he allowed an extra hit every few games. How often does stopping that ground ball up the middle save a run? Once a month? A few times each season?

Bases purely on stats Erick Aybar should have won.

I don't disagree. Then one has to look at the fielding percentage. I don't think a SS should be penalized because he doesn't have the greatest range. Range should be a factor but a secondary factor.

totally agree...range doesn't matter if you still pick it clean... reguardless, I cant stand the little arrogant prick !

No doubt, eight errors is impressive. However, I'd like to see how many errors he'd have if he wasn't Derek Jeter (if you know what I mean).

But, nevertheless, I find range to be second most important factor after fielding % in deciding fielders.

Jeter was not at all a poor fielder this year, but he was not the best either, and the stats show that.

But, like all these awards, they are subjective and Jeter is Jeter. And he wins.

His range and zone stats for his career are barely average.

The thread is about his gold glove. Not his offense, which is fine.

                            Defensively, he is average.

He's not the best SS on his own team.

his defense this year was outstanding, better than he's been the last few years. aybar on anaheim was pretty good too.

His defense was good. And playing better than years past isn;t saying much, IMO.

I don't like Jeter, or how everyone thinks he is something he's not.
