  • Billy Wagner to Red Sox-What Do You Guys(esp. Sox fans) Think?

According to a Major League source, the Red Sox would like to work out a trade for Mets reliever Billy Wagner, who was placed on waivers Wednesday, the day before he made his first appearance in nearly a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Red Sox have been monitoring the 38-year-old lefthander, according to the source, and scouted him last night during the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Braves.

In his first appearance since last September, Wagner pitched one perfect inning, striking out two. According to one report he was hitting 96 miles per hour on the radar gun.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reported this afternoon that one team put in a claim on Wagner, and Florida radio station WFTL 640 reported that the team was the Red Sox.

While this has not been confirmed, a Major League source told the Globe that the Red Sox do hope to acquire Wagner if they are the team that is awarded the waiver claim.

Wagner, who has a 2.40 ERA and 385 saves in 15 seasons in the majors, had a 2.30 ERA in 45 appearances for the Mets last season before undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery.

Wagner is due a little less than $3 million this season, with an $8 million club option for 2010.

He has a no-trade clause in his contract, but has indicated he would be willing to waive it to go to a contender.

If the Red Sox do get him, i like this one a lot. They don't really have anything to lose and if they can get a much needed power lefty out of the pen, it would really help.

We definitely agree on this one.

Worth a shot. He hit 96 on the gun last night.

Well, somebody knows something because teams don't drop solid relievers who throw heat. I smell a rat

You've got a couple games to lose with him in. Why fuck up the only solid part of that team. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You ain't fixing anything. You are adding a piece and they have not looked as good lately as they did earlier in the season. You can ALWAYS use a lefty who hits 96 on the gun in the pen. Especially if you have the money to pay his contract.

I heard that too and heard he looked pretty good last night.

They do when they are out of the race and trying to ditch contracts.

Not if he ends up sucking like he very well could coming off surgery. Sox did something already this season with a pitcher in the rotation, stuck with him too long, and cost themselves games. I could see the same thing happening with this. The bullpen is the only part of that team that DOESN'T need help.

So what, if he sucks he sucks. You release him. What are they supposed to do, stop making any moves because a couple didn't work out? No, you take a flyer on a guy like this and see what you can get. Most teams don't want to spend that money on a 36 year old coming off an injury. Boston is willing to do it.

They picked up Eric Gagne a few years ago too. He ended up costing them about 10 wins and they still won it all that year. There is no need to sit with what you got if you think you can improve yourself.

No, you don't take risks where you don't need to. If they want to risk something, do it with a batter, or a SP, like they should of done with Pedro.

And "so what if he sucks, you release him."

This isn't the first half and it ain't preseason. The Sox might not even make the playoffs, they definitely don't need to take a risk on the only thing that's working.
