Snell has been dominating in the minors, he might still turn it around.

Wouldn't suprise me, but he's now got 250 major league innings of 5.3+ ERA pitching since 2007 to go with 37 great innings in AAA.

For the record, Cliff Lee is no Roy Halladay, I would've include the extra prospect and got Halladay. Ace pitchers are the most important thing in baseball. If the Phillies play the Yankees or RedSox say in the World Series, Halladay against CC or Beckett would be a tough game, Cliff Lee against those guys, and you'll probably lose, and that's two out of 7 games.

Hell, they got Lee without having to give up Happ, Drabek, Brown, or Taylor, so they still technically have all the major pieces that the Jays wanted in exchange for Halladay. Would Hamels, Halladay, and Lee be overkill?

So what's the verdict? It's not Bumgardner, but I thought Alderson was pretty highly regarded. His numbers at AA are nothing to sneeze at for a 20-year old. I wonder if Sanchez will offer the Giants the same 3-year/20mil deal that he offered the Pirates.

I've been hearing people bash Sabaen all day, but I disagree. You don't win a batting title if you can't hit. Alderson wasn't looking that great, even though he was the Giants number 1 pick in 2007. He could be decent though. I like that we were aggressive. With Bumgardner, Cain and Lincecom, we've got a big three, we need as much offense as we can get, but also need speed in the outfield. I would've liked a Dunn at 1st instead of Garko.

If true, Sherrill would work as a setup man in front of closer Jonathan Broxton. Sherrill has a 2.40 ERA, 20 saves and a 39/13 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings this season.

I don't get why the O's would do this. Sherrill is young and the only solid building block in an otherwise terrible bullpen. What did they get in return?

Sherrill is 32 years old. In return the O's got 3B Josh Bell and RHP Steve Johnson. Bell is probably the 3rd best position prospect for the Dodgers and Johnson is probably the 5th or 6th best pitching prospect. That Bedard trade is the gift that keeps on giving for the O's.

Wow I didn't realize Sherrill was that old. But you are right, the Bedard trade keeps spawning more talent for the Birds. One of the best trades that organization has made in decades...

Grabow has reportedly been traded by the Pirates to the Cubs on Thursday, ESPN Chicago reports.

AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price has confirmed that the Pirates will receive RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascanio and 3B Josh Harrison from the Cubs for John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny.

OLNEY: Boston-SD discussing A-Gon

According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, the Red Sox and Padres talked at length late Wednesday night about a possible deal for All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, and they will likely pick up the threads of that conversation today.

The Padres have indicated a willingness to listen to offers about Gonzalez, but in order for the Red Sox to make a trade for the first baseman, they will have to give up the best and the brightest of their young talent; pitchers Clay Buchholz, Junichi Tazawa and young slugger Lars Anderson are among the names which probably have come up. Boston is expected to have discussions today about the two most expensive acquistions available on the market, Roy Halladay and Adrian Gonzalez, and in the end, they may make a deal for Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez.

STARK: Angels target pen
The Angels have stopped pursuing Roy Halladay in particular and starting pitching in general to focus their trade efforts on set-up arms in the bullpen, reports ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

With George Sherrill apparently bound for the Dodgers, the Angels were in the Heath Bell market Thursday and pursuing what one source described as "premium" bullpen arms. They also made a run at Arizona's Chad Qualls and came away convinced that the Diamondbacks aren't going to move him.

OLNEY: Cleveland's V-Mart stance
Victor Martinez | Indians | Interested: Red Sox?
According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, the expectation of rival GMs is that the Indians will trade Victor Martinez before Friday's deadline, but sources indicate that the Indians are telling other teams that they are not intent on dumping the veteran catcher, and that they will need to solid return to move him.

That's because Martinez still fits on the Indians next year, the Indians are saying, in a similar role he's played this year -- catching the majority of the time while getting some time at first base as well. It would be an ideal way to transition Lou Marson, the catcher they got from the Phillies, to the major league level next year.

The Red Sox remain the team in the best position to make a possible deal for Martinez, according to Olney, but rival executives say that Boston has been active on multiple fronts -- at a time when the Red Sox have multiple concerns, from a struggling lineup to a weakened rotation to a bullpen that has been inconsistent of late.

GAMMONS: Reds back off Rolen

ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that the Reds have backed off a potential deal for Toronto third baseman Scott Rolen.

Other clubs say they've been told that the Reds need to move money before they add payroll. Rolen has about $3 million in salary left this year and is guaranteed $11 million next year. The Reds have been looking for teams that might want to take on the contracts of Bronson Arroyo ($11M next year, plus a $2M buyout) and David Weathers (about $1M left this year, plus a $400,000 buyout), and they've also been willing to listen to offers on Aaron Harang ($12.5M next year, plus a $2M buyout) and Arthur Rhodes ($2M next year).
