    Adrian Gonzalez | Padres
According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, the Red Sox and Padres talked at length late Wednesday night about a possible deal for All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, and they will likely pick up the threads of that conversation today.

The Padres have indicated a willingness to listen to offers about Gonzalez, but in order for the Red Sox to make a trade for the first baseman, they will have to give up the best and the brightest of their young talent; pitchers Clay Buchholz, Junichi Tazawa and young slugger Lars Anderson are among the names which probably have come up. Boston is expected to have discussions today about the two most expensive acquistions available on the market, Roy Halladay and Adrian Gonzalez, and in the end, they may make a deal for Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez.
Why did the RedSox just trade for two other 1B?

      No idea about Laroche.

I'd trade Bucholtz and Lars for A Gon. Lars will most likely never be A Gon, if he ever pans out at all. Buchholtz is solid, but not very often do you get a chance a batter like Gonzalez.

The Chicago Cubs acquired Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitchers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny.

The Cubs sent Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio and Single-A infielder Josh Harrison.

          MLB Rumor Central
ESPN Insider has the updated buzz from the Major League Baseball rumor mill.
          Story

The Cubs had been in the market for a left-handed reliever to firm up their bullpen, and Grabow has been on their radar for a while. Sean Marshall was the only lefty in the bullpen.

Before Thursday's game, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told reporters talks had been heating up in the last day as the non-waiver trade deadline expires Friday afternoon.

Grabow has been a big name on the trade market as teams try to stock up for the stretch drive. The lefty set-up man is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA for last-place Pittsburgh, with 41 strikeouts and 28 walks in 47 1/3 innings. He has two blown saves and 16 holds. The 30-year-old has a career 4.04 ERA, and a 3.29 ERA in 42 appearances against the Cubs.

Yea I can imagine. If I was the RedSox I would trade for Halladay, plain and simple, they considered giving up Ellisbury and Lester/Bucholtz for Johan. Buchholtz and two other prospects would be a great trade. Halladay would make them the favorites to win World Series, just like that.

They can make do with the offense they have. Lowell is fine for now. JD Drew is fine for now. They can replace those guys later. Right now, an ace pitcher would be humongous. Halladay Beckett and Lester for this year and next minimum would be tough to beat

I would too BW but hearing what JP wants from Boston, it's almost ridiculous. He wants like the top 4 prospects or something and he won't let them talk to Halladay about an extension so it is tough.

Yea if he's asking too much, it's not worth it. It makes sense too, because if he does trade Halladay to the RedSox, they're gonna get their asses handed to them for the next couple seasons.

I really think JP is backed into a corner though. Doesn't he have to trade him at this point after throwing his name around everywhere? I feel like he does and the best value would come now, not in a year.

I heard he wanted Buchholz, Bowden, Kelly and Bard. I'm fine with the 1st three but no way with Bard. I don't want to part with him.

Yea it's a tough call. If he makes the move with the RedSox, he gets the best value for the future, but Halladay's still got a few years, so they'd be building for a years down the road. If they got one more ace pitcher they could compete. I don't who, but if they got someone like a Johan next year, they could be tough to beat.

Sources told the Boston Globe that the Red Sox and Padres were still talking about Adrian Gonzalez on Thursday night and likely would continue discussions up until the deadline.
According to the Globe, Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Jed Lowrie, Ryan Westmoreland and Justin Masterson are among those being discussed. Gonzalez's name has also come up in talks with the Marlins, though their primary target is believed to be Heath Bell.

So true, Wayne. Everyone up here completely over values the players. I get a kick out of everyone thinking Bucholz is a top of the line (meaning #1 or #2) pitcher. If I am Theo, I trade Bucholz today...his value is at an all-time high and if I could package him with another prospect for AGon or Martinez, I would do it....but what do I know?!
