  • Wayne--just my two cents--I think Martinez is a great fit for Boston--I don't know what the explanation for recent drop in numbers but I think he will do very well in Boston.

For all we know, he might be turning 34 at the end of this year instead of 31. I'm not sure how well you knew the 3 we gave up but i'm certainly not happy about it.

It's just an ankle injury besides, it's not his arm, he should be able to make it back for the very end of the season. So if they can stay in the race, he'll be huge.

I agree Big ... That was a good move for the Sox ... Like you said this could be huge in the stretch for them ...

I don't love the deal, but there is the possibility that Martinez is just worn down from playing 99 of a possible 103 games this season. For the season as a whole, his numbers still look good. It's not outrageous to imagine one of Lowell/Ortiz/Varitek/Martinez sitting each night and all 4 of them hitting better down the stretch as a result. The other positive is that Martinez is still relatively cheap for his production level (5.7 this year and a 7 million club option for next year).

The downside is that I like all 3 of the pitchers that the Sox gave up. I actually think Masterson looks better this year than he did last year. The 4.5 ERA isn't sparkling, but his velocity is up almost 3 MPH on the fastball and the slider, his strikeouts are up, his walks are down, and his home runs are down. If Hagadone can show that he's fully recovered from Tommy John then he could be really good. 32 Ks in 25 IP since coming back is promising. Price is decent. He's the kind of guy where everything looks great when he pitches, but the results don't match. At some point a 6.54 ERA for a 22-year old in A ball just won't work

Overall, I like the versatility that the Red Sox lineup gained with the move if Martinez can fill in for Varitek, but it sort of reminds of a move that the Yankees would have made in the past. As it is, Martinez's days as a catcher are numbered and the Red Sox already have enough aging 1B/DH types as it is.

          • In Theo we trust. I attended the Friday and Saturday games in Baltimore-I am kicking myself for not going Sunday.
I liked the moves even before Sunday.
Reddick looked great in bp as well as in the game Saturday-he can crank it!
I think Martinez will be a good addition over time and will allow Varitek and Lowell to rest when needed-there is a lot to be considered here.

            • After arriving home from Baltimore today and reading some of the commentary and stories about Martinez and who they traded to get him, I am more convinced than ever that it was a very good and wise move for the Sox, and that they got him cheap.
Yeah I will admit Masterson is pretty good but his role at this point was pretty much undefined.
The other guys-one is coming off Tommy John surgery and the other guy had a poor record in the minors.
The fact that Martinez can hit and can play several positions meaning Lowell and Varitek can get some needed rest in my mind makes this a smart move.

As long as you consider Theo "God", you always will agree with what he does.

I was exaggerating a but but he is one of the top three GM's in baseball;I think he is quite perceptive and overall a good judge of who the team needs to succeed and who is expendable and who is not.

So, for shits and giggles Savage, should the Red Sox somehow lose out to the Yankees and say the Evil Empie should win it all, are you going to lose your hard on for Theo for not signing Texeira? With all the money he ponied up for Lowell (who he signed before Texeira signed with the NYY) and for Martinez, both of whom he wouldn't have needed if he signed Tex, that little blunder could cost them a title. Then what are you going to say?

Tell me what you think the last bad move Theo made was? Think hard, i know it's tough.

I don't know about the last but imo Lugo was the worst.

It's easy to be Boy Wonder when you have the 2nd highest payroll budget. A stocked farm system. And mostly, small market teams willing to dump high priced stars for prospects.

He's not looking like Boy Genius this season for overpaying for Dice-K. Not to mention his 2 biggest stars getting caught using PEDs. Now just today two Red Sox members were fired for their involvement in steroid use. Stay tuned as these latest allegation unfold. I guess unlike Omar Minaya you won't hold Boy Wonder accountable for what happens within his franchise.

It isn't shocking that you couldn't come up with anything except Lugo. You probably liked Eric Gagne too didn't you savage? There is a long list but you are blind to all of the bad moves. Amnesia seems to kick in!

That one is a no brainer-Teixera had no intention of playing for the Sox as we all know now-he simply used the Sox fof leverage;he wanted to play for the Yankees period!

You seriously should be on Theo's payroll!
