A taste of what our numerous members received on Saturday:

    Tennessee Titans -1.5 (3 Units)

    Under 38.5 Tennessee/Cincinnati (2 Units)

Tennessee falls into a 92% preseason system since 1992 and the small number doesn't hurt either. Two games into the preseason all signs are good for the Titans. The first-team offense is scoring touchdowns, and the No. 1 defense hasn't allowed one. With the starting defense on the field, the Titans have not only kept Cleveland and Buffalo out of the end zone, they've allowed just one field goal. In two preseason games, Tennessee's first team offense has played five series. Three ended with touchdowns. ''We're playing pretty good football right now, but we still have some things to work on,'' quarterback Steve McNair said. ''We still have two preseason games and we want to take advantage of those two games to get better.'' Both units will be playing into the 3rd quarter and with the way both are playing, things should work out very well. For Cincinnati, the emphasis the past week of camp was on the running game. They're averaging three yards per attempt on 64 carries in their first 2 preseason games. They've had just two rushes of more than 10 yards and one of those was a 14-yard scramble out of the pocket by quarterback Jon Kitna. The red-zone offense has produced just three touchdowns in seven attempts in the two games, having to settle for field goals three times last week. On two of those field goal drives, the Bengals failed to convert a third-and-short running play. Following last week's 23-10 win against Detroit, head coach Marvin Lewis expressed his displeasure with the running game. "I think (ball control) is the quickest way and the most consistent way to win, and the way to win for the longest period of time," Lewis said. Whoever is playing at RB, Corey Dillon or backup Brandon Bennett, the goal of the extended running work this week was to get back to the basics. "We banged it out and we've had a lot of concentration on moving the ball," Bennett said. "It has to be everybody. It's about all of us coming out here and understanding what we're trying to do. It's understanding the blocking scheme, understanding what each person is doing. That's one of the problems we've had. It's not the effort, it's been the fact that there have been people doing other people's jobs." With the way the Titans defense has stepped up early this preseason and the fact that the Titans finished second in the league in rush defense last season, it might be difficult to get the running game going tonight. As for the Bengals defense, things are on the up. The defensive line, bolstered by the additions of free agents Duane Clemons (Chiefs), Carl Powell (Redskins) and John Thornton (Titans), has looked impressive so far. In its first two preseason games, Cincinnati's defense has held opponents to 3 yards per carry and 443 total yards per game using primarily a four-man rush. Tennessee should have no problem here and the under would be a bigger play but the Bengals defense, although they have played well through two games, can't be trusted just yet.

    Washington Redskins -3 (3 Units)

The Redskins fit into our preseason system that the Steelers fell into on Thursday and we all saw what happened there. It's still at 70% so it cannot be shaken off yet. Washington has played and looked awful in their first 2 preseason games so what can possibly change now to get them going? One early factor is that the Redskins overhauled their roster, bringing in 21 new veterans plus a slew of rookies and first-year players. Bringing in all of this new personnel will obviously take some time for them to gel. Steve Spurrier let it be known what to expect and what has happened thus far. "This week we're going to do it a little more with Baltimore. We have a whole week now where we're focused on them. We're not worried about breaking camp. We're preparing for them as we would a regular game. I think you'll notice in the first preseason game that we didn't come together at all, except for maybe one or two plays. In the second game, you saw us come out a little rusty and then in the second quarter we started to put some drives together and we actually put some points on the board. I think that's an evolution of our offense. We're finally getting comfortable with each other and what the plays are. Once we start doing that, you'll see the confidence start to come around." Spurrier plans to leave his first-team offense in the game for two quarters, like last week. Starting QB Patrick Ramsey, though, figures to come out a little sooner. "He needs to play, but he needs to be healthy," Spurrier said. "So it doesn't make sense to put him out there to get hit a whole bunch." Backups Johnson and Wuerffel have plenty of experience and have worked well at camp so their won't be a huge dropoff here. Trung Canidate will start his third game at running back, but Spurrier plans to get Ladell Betts into the game early. Betts will be making his preseason debut after recovering from a sprained elbow. Expect a better effort from the special teams unit from last week as the kickoff coverage unit was sloppy, tripping over each other and providing gaping holes to allow a 42-yard kick return and a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by rookie Bethel Johnson. The silver lining is that the unit was mainly made up of players unlikely to make the team, such as wide receiver Scott Cloman, defensive back Jordan Younger and tailback Sultan McCullough. For Baltimore, their biggest question mark is still at the quarterback position. Chris Redman started the first two preseason games, but Kyle Boller took a majority of the snaps with the starters in the final two days of camp. It would not be surprising if Boller, the 19th overall pick in the draft, made his first NFL start Saturday in Washington. It will be a tough spot for the rookie to make his first start at their hated rival's house. What we see here is a much better effort from Washington than we have seen thus far. Spurrier has obviously been holding some back and he should bring more to the table on Saturday.

    Seattle Seahawks -3 (2 Units)

Head coach Mike Holmgren was very optimistic when camp broke and he said the starters will play the first half, then the first series of the second half to acclimate them to playing after halftime. He also said three quarterbacks will play - Hasselbeck, Trent Dilfer and Seneca Wallace, in that order. "I always have concerns in preseason," Holmgren said. "One, I just want to get everyone healthy and playing. Two, our offense needs to be consistent. But that's stuff I worry about all the time probably." According to new defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes, the unit has been progressing to his liking, particularly in the secondary where impact draft picks such as Ken Hamlin (safety) and Marcus Trufant (cornerback) have Rhodes singing praises. "I don't want to say above average because they're better than above average," Rhodes said. "The type of caliber that we got out of this draft, we got guys that are going to be able to help us immediately." It looks pretty obvious that Kansas City is more concerned about getting out alive than actually winning this football game. Head coach Dick Vermeil would like to see several young players play well in Seattle to shore up many of the backup positions where the Chiefs are lacking. Running back and the offensive line are among the areas that still need to be resolved. But the real goal against the Seahawks is to avoid major injuries. The Chiefs weren't so fortunate in last year's exhibition game in Seattle. Free safety Jerome Woods broke his leg and didn't play during the regular season. "Stay healthy," Vermeil said when asked about priorities in Seattle. "Go to Seattle and come back with a airplane full of (healthy) players." The Seahawks are coming off a sloppy 21-7 defeat at Indianapolis, where they lost three fumbles and had two interceptions. It was a contrast to the efficiency they showed in a 20-7 win over San Diego in the exhibition opener. We see them getting back to form like that first game since they are returning home tonight. Seattle is an amazing 16-3 ATS in week 3 of preseason since 1990, showing that they get the most out of their starters since this is the week they get the most playing time. The Seahawks prevail here.

          Arizona Cardinals +6 (3 Units)

The Cardinals are looking to complete a perfect preseason, something no one would have imagined entering the exhibition year. They have won their games by an average of nearly 10 ppg and would like to continue their winning heading into the regular season thus giving them some much needed confidence. Arizona has lost two starters in the past two preseason games, but head coach Dave McGinnis isn't skittish about playing his first team a little this Thursday in Minneapolis against the Vikings. "That's one thing you can't do in this business is you can't play scared, act scared, coach scared, run scared, be scared," he said. The starters are only expected to play one to two series as the coaching staff takes a closer look at some of the players that are on the bubble. Quarterback Jeff Blake will start the game, but Josh McCown and Preston Parsons will get most of the snaps. Coach Mike Tice said he might not decide until Thursday whether to risk playing Denard Walker. Walker strained a hamstring July 30, came back and had been out since aggravating it Aug. 16 against Kansas City. The team decided Tuesday that right cornerback Ken Irvin will not play Thursday in the exhibition finale against Arizona. Tice isn't sure how long his starters will play Thursday. But he is sure they won't come out until they've ended their preseason on a good note. "If they don't look good, they'll stay out there until they do," Tice said. "Is that two quarters, three quarters, 3 1/2 quarters? I don't know. But we're not going to finish the preseason on a bad note." We can look at this in two ways. They look good their first series on both sides of the ball and they are done. They go into the 3rd quarter, thus they have stunk it up the beginning of the game so this scenario really doesn't come into play since there is no definite timetable on their playing time. We have some great systems going in this matchup both for Arizona and against Minnesota. Favoring Arizona is a 22-4 (84.6%) road underdog system that goes back over the last 5 seasons and a 28-9 (75.7%) road underdog system that goes back to 1993. Against Minnesota is an 18-2 (90%) favorite system that dates back to 1993. Six points is a lot to lay in the preseason, especially in the final week of games. We will gobble up the points and look for an outright Arizona victory.

              Saturday Free Service Play

              Clemson Tigers +3 (3 Units)

Georgia, already young and very thin, hobble into this contest as injuries hit them hard during training camp. Clemson meanwhile returns 8 on an offense that could turn into one of the best in the ACC with a new game plan. Sophomore Duane Coleman will start at tailback for Clemson on Saturday, offensive coordinator Brad Scott said. "He has gone full speed on everything he has done," Scott said. "That's the first thing that captures your eye." Head coach Tommy Bowden said 2002 leading rusher Yusef Kelly should be getting back into the mix at tailback after reporting to camp overweight. But Scott said Kelly might not play much this week. When offensive line coach Ron West watches Clemson's running backs hit the line of scrimmage during practice, he knows the Tigers will be better on short-yardage and goal-line plays this season. West said his position group has improved on short-yardage plays, which were a constant source of frustration in 2002. But West said the biggest difference in short yardage comes from the backfield. "We have fullbacks now that have shown that second level of blocking, that go attack people," West said. "And we have tailbacks that go attack the line of scrimmage and run through things. They take a personal pride in making that first down." Heading into Saturday's season opener against Georgia at Death Valley, Clemson's players say short-yardage success could make the difference between seven wins and 10 wins this season. They also are embarrassed at their short-yardage production from a year ago. Clemson converted 18 of 32 (56.3 percent) third-and-1 or fourth-and-1 situations last season. Four starters - Walker, center Tommy Sharpe, guard Cedric Johnson and tackle William Henry - return from the line that dominated rival South Carolina's normally stout defense in the fourth quarter of a 27-20 victory in last season's final regular season game. Charlie Whitehurst returns to QB after a tough but charter building 2002 season. He has a great deal of athletic receivers to throw to and with the new dedication to the short game, he could easily have a breakout season. In training camp, Georgia has suffered a number of devastating injuries, including a season-ending broken ankle to starting defensive end Will Thompson. Georgia's final preseason scrimmage on Thursday was a more delicate affair than usual, and for good reason. A difficult bout with preseason injuries caused coach Mark Richt to limit the contact in the scrimmage. Defenders did not tackle ball carriers to the ground, and blocking below the waist was prohibited as Richt attempted to keep the Bulldogs healthy. Besides Thompson, starters SS Kentrell Curry and NT Ken Veal and reserves DT Dale Dixson, SS Greg Blue, CB Tim Jennings, CB DeMario Minter wil all miss Saturday's game. The offensive line is the biggest concern for Georgia where everyone had to be replaced from last season. Sophomore guard Bartley Miller is ready to play despite tendonitis in his shoulder that has bothered him all fall. "I think fatigue is an issue," line coach Neil Callaway said. Sophomore Reggie Weeks will back up Miller, and walk-on Ryan Schnetzer will relieve Josh Brock at the other guard spot. At tackle, backup Dennis Roland is certain to play, and first-year freshman Ken Shackleford could play. Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said he's still nervous about all of his young linebackers being in the right spot at the right time on Saturday. "I don't want to say I'm happy," he said. "It's still a learning process. We're just going to have to see how they react to the arena and the atmosphere of the game." It's obvious who will be coming into this game more apprehensive while Clemson has the experience, healthier team and some revenge in their favor. The home dog gets the money here.

                Kentucky Wildcats -5.5 (2 Units)

Two teams with new coaches square off in their annual rivalry as Louisville travels to Kentucky to take on the Wildcats. The Cardinals are now led by Bob Petrino while veteran coach Rich Brooks takes over Kentucky. Both coached shouldn't miss a beat as both programs had success last season and both bring back some good talent. We like the offense of Kentucky a little more because of their multiple sets and the Louisville defense will have to replace much more than that of the Kentucky stop unit. Mike Archer is in his second stint as UK's defensive coordinator, returning to the same role he filled on Bill Curry's staff from 1993-95. The most recognizable difference will come on the field, where Archer's defense will operate from the 3-4 alignment, a much different scheme than the 4-2-5 look used by former coordinator John Goodner. To fill the outside linebacker spot at UK, Archer will look to sophomores Deion Holts and Raymond Fontaine, who were undersize backup defensive ends last season. Archer deemed outside linebacker as the most vital position to the overall success of the defense. "In this defense, you've got to have a dominant outside 'backer, a guy that's going to make plays," Archer said. "He can rush the passer, drop back into coverage. He's going to force people to slide protections to him. He's a Joey Porter, he's a Jason Gildon, Kevin Greene (a former Steelers linebacker) Players that guys have to gameplan their offense to face." UK is the only Southeastern Conference school and one of only nine Division I-A programs that will use the 3-4. "That should help us," Archer said. "There just aren't a lot of teams out there that use (the 3-4), so coaches will probably have to spend some extra time preparing for it." Ron Hudson's complex offensive system has helped his defense adapt to a new scheme. Hudson's offense may run the option on one play and then be spread out with five receivers and an empty backfield on the next. "We saw a little bit of everything, so that should help us in the fall," Archer said. "When you have an offense that's multi-faceted, it helps you preparation-wise. If we play an option team one week, we'll have seen it before in practice. If we play a team that likes to spread it out and throw it around, we'll have seen that also." Hudson's offense contains a multitude of different sets and formations, and he threw every one of them at Kentucky players during spring practice. Hudson has worked with some athletic quarterbacks in the past, such as All-American Michael Bishop and Ell Roberson at Kansas St. "In my opinion, Shane Boyd is an all-around better athlete than Ell Roberson," Hudson said. "When I say all-around, I mean he can play quarterback, receiver, running back. He could even play on the defensive ball if you needed him to." Hudson said the passing ability of Jared Lorenzen and Boyd gives him a luxury he has never had as a coach. "I've never worked with two quarterbacks at the same time who could throw the ball like Jared and Shane can," Hudson said. "That will allow us to do some things." A freshman who could make an impact is Keenan Burton, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver, who looked like one of UK's best athletes from the moment he took the field for two-a-days. "That's the type of player we line up and play against when we face the Tennessees and Georgias, and now we've got one," Brooks said of Burton. The Cardinals meanwhile will need to replace 6 big-name players on defense, which could spell trouble early on. Offensively, Dave Raggone has departed along with Damian Dorsey at receiver but with the 4/5 of the offensive line returning, they should still be relatively productive. We like the multiple looks that Kentucky will throw at Louisville on both sides of the ball and they will make it 2 in a row in this annual series.
