A taste of what our numerous members received on Saturday:
Tennessee Titans -1.5 (3 Units)
Under 38.5 Tennessee/Cincinnati (2 Units)
Tennessee falls into a 92% preseason system since 1992 and the small number doesn't hurt either. Two games into the preseason all signs are good for the Titans. The first-team offense is scoring touchdowns, and the No. 1 defense hasn't allowed one. With the starting defense on the field, the Titans have not only kept Cleveland and Buffalo out of the end zone, they've allowed just one field goal. In two preseason games, Tennessee's first team offense has played five series. Three ended with touchdowns. ''We're playing pretty good football right now, but we still have some things to work on,'' quarterback Steve McNair said. ''We still have two preseason games and we want to take advantage of those two games to get better.'' Both units will be playing into the 3rd quarter and with the way both are playing, things should work out very well. For Cincinnati, the emphasis the past week of camp was on the running game. They're averaging three yards per attempt on 64 carries in their first 2 preseason games. They've had just two rushes of more than 10 yards and one of those was a 14-yard scramble out of the pocket by quarterback Jon Kitna. The red-zone offense has produced just three touchdowns in seven attempts in the two games, having to settle for field goals three times last week. On two of those field goal drives, the Bengals failed to convert a third-and-short running play. Following last week's 23-10 win against Detroit, head coach Marvin Lewis expressed his displeasure with the running game. "I think (ball control) is the quickest way and the most consistent way to win, and the way to win for the longest period of time," Lewis said. Whoever is playing at RB, Corey Dillon or backup Brandon Bennett, the goal of the extended running work this week was to get back to the basics. "We banged it out and we've had a lot of concentration on moving the ball," Bennett said. "It has to be everybody. It's about all of us coming out here and understanding what we're trying to do. It's understanding the blocking scheme, understanding what each person is doing. That's one of the problems we've had. It's not the effort, it's been the fact that there have been people doing other people's jobs." With the way the Titans defense has stepped up early this preseason and the fact that the Titans finished second in the league in rush defense last season, it might be difficult to get the running game going tonight. As for the Bengals defense, things are on the up. The defensive line, bolstered by the additions of free agents Duane Clemons (Chiefs), Carl Powell (Redskins) and John Thornton (Titans), has looked impressive so far. In its first two preseason games, Cincinnati's defense has held opponents to 3 yards per carry and 443 total yards per game using primarily a four-man rush. Tennessee should have no problem here and the under would be a bigger play but the Bengals defense, although they have played well through two games, can't be trusted just yet.
Washington Redskins -3 (3 Units)
The Redskins fit into our preseason system that the Steelers fell into on Thursday and we all saw what happened there. It's still at 70% so it cannot be shaken off yet. Washington has played and looked awful in their first 2 preseason games so what can possibly change now to get them going? One early factor is that the Redskins overhauled their roster, bringing in 21 new veterans plus a slew of rookies and first-year players. Bringing in all of this new personnel will obviously take some time for them to gel. Steve Spurrier let it be known what to expect and what has happened thus far. "This week we're going to do it a little more with Baltimore. We have a whole week now where we're focused on them. We're not worried about breaking camp. We're preparing for them as we would a regular game. I think you'll notice in the first preseason game that we didn't come together at all, except for maybe one or two plays. In the second game, you saw us come out a little rusty and then in the second quarter we started to put some drives together and we actually put some points on the board. I think that's an evolution of our offense. We're finally getting comfortable with each other and what the plays are. Once we start doing that, you'll see the confidence start to come around." Spurrier plans to leave his first-team offense in the game for two quarters, like last week. Starting QB Patrick Ramsey, though, figures to come out a little sooner. "He needs to play, but he needs to be healthy," Spurrier said. "So it doesn't make sense to put him out there to get hit a whole bunch." Backups Johnson and Wuerffel have plenty of experience and have worked well at camp so their won't be a huge dropoff here. Trung Canidate will start his third game at running back, but Spurrier plans to get Ladell Betts into the game early. Betts will be making his preseason debut after recovering from a sprained elbow. Expect a better effort from the special teams unit from last week as the kickoff coverage unit was sloppy, tripping over each other and providing gaping holes to allow a 42-yard kick return and a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by rookie Bethel Johnson. The silver lining is that the unit was mainly made up of players unlikely to make the team, such as wide receiver Scott Cloman, defensive back Jordan Younger and tailback Sultan McCullough. For Baltimore, their biggest question mark is still at the quarterback position. Chris Redman started the first two preseason games, but Kyle Boller took a majority of the snaps with the starters in the final two days of camp. It would not be surprising if Boller, the 19th overall pick in the draft, made his first NFL start Saturday in Washington. It will be a tough spot for the rookie to make his first start at their hated rival's house. What we see here is a much better effort from Washington than we have seen thus far. Spurrier has obviously been holding some back and he should bring more to the table on Saturday.
Seattle Seahawks -3 (2 Units)
Head coach Mike Holmgren was very optimistic when camp broke and he said the starters will play the first half, then the first series of the second half to acclimate them to playing after halftime. He also said three quarterbacks will play - Hasselbeck, Trent Dilfer and Seneca Wallace, in that order. "I always have concerns in preseason," Holmgren said. "One, I just want to get everyone healthy and playing. Two, our offense needs to be consistent. But that's stuff I worry about all the time probably." According to new defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes, the unit has been progressing to his liking, particularly in the secondary where impact draft picks such as Ken Hamlin (safety) and Marcus Trufant (cornerback) have Rhodes singing praises. "I don't want to say above average because they're better than above average," Rhodes said. "The type of caliber that we got out of this draft, we got guys that are going to be able to help us immediately." It looks pretty obvious that Kansas City is more concerned about getting out alive than actually winning this football game. Head coach Dick Vermeil would like to see several young players play well in Seattle to shore up many of the backup positions where the Chiefs are lacking. Running back and the offensive line are among the areas that still need to be resolved. But the real goal against the Seahawks is to avoid major injuries. The Chiefs weren't so fortunate in last year's exhibition game in Seattle. Free safety Jerome Woods broke his leg and didn't play during the regular season. "Stay healthy," Vermeil said when asked about priorities in Seattle. "Go to Seattle and come back with a airplane full of (healthy) players." The Seahawks are coming off a sloppy 21-7 defeat at Indianapolis, where they lost three fumbles and had two interceptions. It was a contrast to the efficiency they showed in a 20-7 win over San Diego in the exhibition opener. We see them getting back to form like that first game since they are returning home tonight. Seattle is an amazing 16-3 ATS in week 3 of preseason since 1990, showing that they get the most out of their starters since this is the week they get the most playing time. The Seahawks prevail here.
