Drivers to pay more if demand swells, refiners turn winter fuel production
High gas prices are listed at a World Gas Station in Sunnyvale, Calif. this week. The government said Wednesday fuel prices could stay at peak levels beyond August if demand swells and refiners turn to produce heating supplies for winter months.

WASHINGTON - U.S. gasoline prices could remain at peak levels beyond the usual July-August period, if motor fuel demand is more than expected later this summer, the government said on Wednesday.

Retail gasoline climbed this week to a record $2.33 a gallon nationally, on rising crude oil prices and strong petroleum demand.

Pump prices could go higher if fuel demand picks up in late summer and refiners have already switched to making heating oil for the upcoming autumn and winter, the Energy Information Administration said.

U.S. gasoline demand over the last four weeks has averaged 9.4 million barrels per day, up 2.3 percent from the same period last year, the Energy Department's analytical arm said.

With demand up, gasoline inventories fell 2.7 million barrels last week, putting fuel stocks in the upper half of the average range for this time of year.

"As long as gasoline markets remain tight, greater price volatility can be expected," the EIA said in its weekly review of the oil market.

The agency said hurricanes, refinery outages, pipeline breaks and surges in demand will create a "larger price response" when incremental gasoline supplies are limited because of little spare refining capacity.

To help lower record gasoline prices, Rep. Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, on Tuesday urged the Bush administration to immediately release crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

However, the administration says the emergency stockpile, which holds around 697 million barrels of oil, should used only in a severe supply disruption and not to control prices.

its anywhere between 2.21 and 2.35... I was in panama city before the hurricane came and they had a thing on the news about how some gas stations raised there price like 8 or 9 cents in less than 12 hours. They are all thieves IMO.

NYS has about the highest taxes in the nation on everything. The closer you get to NYC the higher the taxes get. When I went to NYC in march for the big east toruny finals, Gas on the palisades parkway (just northwest of NYC) @ the citgo was $2.79 for the cheap stuff. Its out of control.

My wife and I both commute to OKC (about 90 miles round trip). She drives an 05 Chrysler 300C and I drive an extended cab GMC pickup. Gas is killin me. Need to get a hybrid or something. We were stopped at a gas station on the Interstate recently and were looking at a hybrid Ford parked in the parking lot. The owner came out. "50 miles per gallon", the owner of the hybrid said. My wife pointed to her Chrysler, "340 horsepower".

This isn't going to help us. All have been evacuated except for 11 men on the rigs in the Gulf for approaching Emily.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- BP Plc. said late Monday that Thunder Horse, one if its big Gulf of Mexico deepwater oil rigs, was listing badly after Hurricane Dennis swept through area this past weekend.

The semi-submersible rig, an essential component in the development of the Thunder Horse oil and gas field on Mississippi Canyon Block 778, about 150 miles southeast of New Orleans, was heeled over at an angle of 20 to 30 degrees, the company said....
