  • Anyone had Lasik Surgery?

If so what can you tell me about it?

Are you actually awake when they do the procedure?

I'd like to know also. Thinking about getting it done myself.

TO ALL YOU GUYS THINKING ABOUT THIS-i have had terrible vision all my life, its why i type in caps most of the time, just had cataract surgery done,i have talked to the best eye docs in the world.if your thinking about this, the new contac that wraps over your eye is much better, better vision after surgery, and much safer to the eyes,no blowtorch on the eyes,i know it sounds rough putting a contac in your eye,but really guys its no big deal,my vision was too bad for lasik or the contac implants but if i could have had the opportunity would have gone for the contacs-its not even close, think they cost about 5 or 6 thousand for both your eyes, thats only 2 or 3 dimes more than lasik,no heat on the eyes-TALK IT OVER WITH YOUR DOCTOR-NONE OF THE HEADACHES AND WEARING DARK GLASSES THAT YOU SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE GET AFTER LASIK !! !! ps-and no-you can not feel them in your eyes !!

I did go for the preliminary appointment to see if I was a good candidate about 1 month ago. Unfortunately, I wasn't a good candidate. However, I did get all the info. You are awake during the procedure. It only takes about 30mins (a few hours with all the prep time), and the laser is actually only on your eye for something like 30sec each eye. When they did my initial exam, they said I "showed signs of a potentially weak cornea". They said that the surgery would increase my chances of cornea problems down the line. There was no guarantee that I would have the problems, but it did increase my chances, so I chose not to do it.....just not worth it. So, make sure you go to a good doctor. My guy said that a lot of people would have just taken my money and would have done the surgery.....not telling me the "whole truth".

He did offer me another solution called epilasik. This is a procedure where basically instead of cutting the flap in my eye and then doing the laser work, they "push the cells aside" and then do the laser work. Thus, not cutting into my cornea so deeply. He said the procedure is safer and just as successful. I asked: then why doesn't everyone have this done? He said that the recovery time is much longer. With normal lasik, you walk out that day, and within 24 hours, you are 20/20. With epilasik, it is a minimum of like 5 days until you can go to work, and it can be weeks or months until you have "caught up" to a lasiks patient. Again, chose not to do it....just not worth it for me.....yet.

With all this said, do your homework and make sure you use a good Doc, not just the cheapest. People who I have talked to and had it done, DO LOVE IT.

Sorry for all the typos...in a hurry.

                Hope this helps.

gookis, been a while since i talked to my doctor about them but pretty sure you can have them removed fairly easy if you decide you don't like them, like you said earlier, sit down and talk over all your options with a good doc,not one of those 5 hundred per eye budget jobs !! ps=from what i remember though, the contacs sounded great and not that big a deal !! 2nd ps-have not talked to anybody who has had them implanted that does not swear buy them and how much their vision has improved !!

3rdps-if i remember correctly,i think they prevent or slow the process of further vision loss !!

                          WayneC,

But, do they need to be replaced every couple years or so? It would seem to me if they are something in your eyes, that they would build up debris, or film, or something like that.

I had it done about 3 years ago. In 1 day my vision went from 20-400 to 20/20. The following week it was 20/15. It was worth every penny.
You are awake during the procedure which is a little scary. They give you option of taking a zanax. What they do is put a ring around your eyeball to hold it still. Then they slice it which is scary because you see nothing but black for a few seconds. Then next you hear a clicking sound which is the laser performing the procedure on your eye. You dont feel a thing.
                              I highly recommend it.
