yes but put the money aside for a second. Torre has had the best talent in MLB bar none for over a decade. unlimited payroll and ability to upgrade @ any point during the year. Fact is Torre isnt that great of a manager and winning 1,000 games shouldnt be something to be all excited about if your a yankee fan. Big freakin deal. I'll put it like this. Torre = Ferrari Me = pinto who you betting on to win a 1 mile race down a road???? torre right..... Thats what i thought. Thats what torre is doing he is controlling a ferrari and still not blowing the doors off the rest.2013 NCAA POD Record

YOU must be high on Wayne's weed again. Need you forget who was "managing" the yankees when they lost in the biggest collapse in post season history.....ah that would be ding ding ding Joe Torre....i know i know he is a great manager and won 1,000 games with the yankees.Last edited by 10DimeBry; 05-09-2006, 04:40 PM.2013 NCAA POD Record

Do you think the Yankees of the late 90's were the most talented teams? Or the best that played together? I hate the Yankees..but the late '90 Yankees with O'Neill, Brosius, Bernie, Tino, Jeter, Posada...none of those, except for maybe Jeter and Rivera, were the best at their position. They played the right way and were actually tough to hate because they played the game the way it is supposed to be played...fundamentally sound, intense, put it all on the line and played hard. The teams in recent years have had major shortcomings (Cashman fault, not Torre). Their starting pitching has not been good. They have been hurt (as is everyone else) and they have not performed in the clutch. Blame Torre for that if you want, but look at some other teams that spent the money and couldn't compete...Mid-90 Mets for example. the Manager still has to get them to perform. I agree with you that 1000 wins for Torre is not a big deal, I just think he is one of the top 5-6 Managers in the game right now and not middle of the road as you believe.

i too love a sports debate. What i'm saying is if you were to dress a Donkey in a NYY cap and a NYY wind breaker and put it on the bench, it would win 1,000 games too. And yes the late 90's NYY were that damn good. Jeter, bernie, pissada all going into their primes. O and dont forget rivera, clemens, cone, wells o and o'neil and tino. Come on. And then look @ who they won their WS against. SD,atl(whom everyone beats) the muts. You cant blame NYY for who they played i know that. What my point being is with that amount of talent and endless payroll and abilities to aquire players Torre IMO hasnt done anything special what so ever.2013 NCAA POD Record

I bet Torre would have had the smarts to take Pedro Martinez out in that infamous game 7 of the 2003 playoffs, an error which ultimately cost the Sox the game and the series.
yes i do believe francona/little/you/me/spark/wayne(stoned) would have won as many WS titles as Torre. please take a good look @ Mr Torre track record before managing the yankees. then we will further this discussion. Please see NY mets, atl,st louis2013 NCAA POD Record

To change the subject slightly, I admit Yanks had some great players in those years they won, but you know what, the Red Sox also had some great teams over the years and until 2004 won nothing.
No the manager doesn't go out and hit homers and pitch shutouts, but a good manager like a good player sometimes brings many intangibles, some of which inspire the team to great heights.
I for one would rate Torre at least as good as anyone else managing today and better than most.Last edited by savage1; 05-09-2006, 05:10 PM.
