[QUOTE=TwoTonTony]bover i am pretty sure weight was an issue.....strokes are generally caused by high blood pressure, which in turn is caused by being obese among other things......Think about a garden hose when you put your thumb over the end of it....it increases the pressure....same thing in your arteries, veins and blodd vessels....except when they weaken over time they eventually give out (aneurysm) it can be fatal.....a bleed in the brain causes intense pressure as there is no where for this blood to go since it causes so much pressure.....Sorry for being long winded, but my guess is that it was a large factor[/QU i
i believe thats correct tony.... i think his brother and uncle also died at a young age .... i think his weight factored in some of the complications....

Originally posted by twr108Kirby was great, as a player. Off the field he had some issues with his spouse, but what big players under the immense spotlight and scrutiny don't. I personally liked him.
I LOVED Kirby as a ball player and he was gritty on the field and relentless. To say he was a GREAT man bothers me though. His wife left him after he was caught cheating for years, he had sexual assault charges against him another time, and he had a sexual harassment case against him from a Twins employee. I too am very saddened by his passing and wish that on nobody young or old and no doubt he was too young. I lost my dad not long ago and i did consider him a great man and i feel comfortable saying that and i feel he shouldn't be classified as a great man because he was a great player. I'm sorry if this bothers some 'cause like i said, i'm very saddened by his death but Kirby had many deamons inside that lead to some major issues in his life. It was no reason for him to die and i hope he did find god to heal his many sins.
I just think that the words "Great Man" should be saved for the ones who truly fit the mold. My dad wouldn't think twice about doing any of those things Kirby did so maybe he should just be called spectacular if Kirby was great.

Yeah, he was a great player, but not everyone turns great b/c he dies. I know I'm going to catch a lot of shit for this, but there is a lot of bad shit this guy was ALLEGED to have done.
The guy was ALLEGED to have dragged a woman into a restaurant bathroom by her ankles and groped her.
His wife ALLEGED that Kirby choked her with a clock electrical cord, placed a pistol in her face as she held their then 2-year-old daughter, and cocked the ****** of the pistol, and locked her in the basement after an argument. After not coming out he ALLEGEDLY used a power saw to cut through a door in their home.
He was ALLEGED to have had an 18 year affair with a woman, who also filed for a restraining order for threatening to kill her.
He was also ALLEGED to have paid off 2 other woman who he had an affair with.
My point being he was a great baseball player, but it sounds to me like he was hardly a great man.
That said, RIP.

Not everyone can be perfect off the field, but he was perfect on the field and he will be remembered for all the Great things he did dudring his illustrious career rather than the mishaps he had at home or while out.
There is not one athelete out there who does not have some type of domestic/social problems, but he personified the player everyone wants to be as a kid. The one who cares more about winning then getting paid. The one who wants to play for his team rather than himself. The one who did everything right... fundamentally.
Those type of players are few and very far between, especially nowadays. I prefer to remember him as the man he was... on the field... because in that respect he was and will continue to be an idol to many.
RIP Kirby... and thank you for personifying what a ball player SHOULD aspire to be... a TEAM PLAYER full of enthusiasm and pride. Thank you for the memories

RIP kirby.......i can not comment on his character and neither can anyone else here......We all think we know these famous athletes because of their persona.....I can say this for sure and i am sure it is why more athletes are unfaithful than regular people.....You are only as strong as your options......It is easy for us to judge if we live in bum fuck USA and there are not beautiful women throwing themselves at you everyday.....I am sure many of these guys fight the urge for awhile and then when they are being fucking nagged by their wife they give in.....I have friends in the adult entertainment biz and i can tell you that it would take a strong man......Now i have no idea if he was a GREAT man or a piece of shit, but either way we are all human and err....i still think 44 is way too young......I do not even know why people feel the need to comment on his character or lack of on the day he dies....i believe if you have nothing good to say then you shouldn't...JMHO

Plain & simple and as mentioned i've watched and seen Great men pass. He was a GREAT Baseball player but just as you say, nobody knows him but the facts are facts so why call him a great man?

Wayne, I agree with you. the word 'great' is so overused and misused in this day and age. Kirby was a GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER. He will be remembered for his enerygy, spirit, enthusiasm and for someone who did not listen to the naysayers. He overcame the physical attributes to become one of the great centerfielders. But like you say, from what has been written, and none of us no the whole story, it sounds like 'great' should not be used in describing the person. That said, he was an inspiration for many and will be missed!Three Jack's Record http://www.bettorschat.com/forums/sh...10#post1323910
