LSU's Russell to miss Peach Bowl

    12/26/05 9:45:07 PM CT

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - LSU starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell will reportedly miss the December 30 Peach Bowl against ninth-ranked Miami-Florida due to a shoulder injury.

According to The Miami Herald, Russell did not accompany the No. 10 Tigers to Atlanta and will not make the trip later this week.

Russell separated his non-throwing shoulder in the SEC Championship against Georgia on December 3 and was forced to leave the game due to the injury. The sophomore signal-caller was replaced in the game by third-year sophomore Matt Flynn, who will make his first career start in the Peach Bowl.

In 12 games this season, Russell ended 188-of-311 for 2,443 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while also adding two rushing scores.

The paper also reported that the Hurricanes will be without a major offensive weapon, as wide receiver Ryan Moore has been suspended for violating team policy. Moore had 28 catches on the year for 464 yards and four touchdowns.

Cox to start in Champs Sports Bowl for Colorado

    12/23/05 11:55:04 PM CT

Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Colorado has named James Cox starting quarterback for next Tuesday's Champs Sports Bowl against Clemson.

Cox will fill in for Joel Klatt, who hasn't been cleared for practice by team doctors following a severe concussion he suffered in the third quarter of the Big 12 Championship against Texas. Klatt has not been ruled entirely out of the game, which will take place at the Citrus Bowl.

Klatt suffered his injury when the Longhorns' Drew Kelson registered an illegal helmet-to-chin hit. Klatt was hospitalized overnight in Houston following the injury.

"Joel still hasn't been cleared," Buffaloes interim head coach Mike Hankwitz said. "His symptoms are getting better, but he still hasn't been cleared. If he does get clearance from the doctors and trainers, we'll have him available for spot duty, but James Cox is going to start."

Cox has one career start, in 2004 as a sophomore against Iowa State, and has seen only limited action this season.

"It's nothing new for me," Cox said. "You prepare the same way whether you are starting or not. It's preparing to go out there and win, move the ball and put points on the board."

Klatt has set 44 school records. He has completed 241-of-400 passes for 2,696 yards with 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. Cox is 13-of-29 for 93 yards and has played in seven games this year.

Brian White and Bernard Jackson will backup Cox if Klatt can't suit up.

Alabama's Castille won't play in Cotton Bowl

        12/23/05 11:55:04 PM CT

Tuscaloosa, AL (Sports Network) - Alabama sophomore cornerback Simeon Castille was ruled academically ineligible and will not play in the January 2 Cotton Bowl against Texas Tech.

"Simeon Castille will not make the trip," said Crimson Tide head coach Mike Shula. "He is not eligible academically to make it by conference rule, so he won't make the trip. Everyone else should make the trip, as far as we know, right now."

Castille played in all 11 of his team's games this season, including two starts. On the year, he finished with 28 tackles, including four tackles for loss, two interceptions and two sacks.

The loss could prove costly for the Tide because Texas Tech has the No. 1 rated passing offense in the country.

Athens, GA (Sports Network) - University of Georgia wide receiver Sean Bailey tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during practice Tuesday night and will not play in the Sugar Bowl on January 2 versus West Virginia.

Bailey caught 16 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs (10-2). The junior wideout was quarterback D.J. Shockley's favorite deep threat, averaging a team-leading 22.8 yards per catch with a minimum of 10 receptions.
