Motor City Bowl Detroit Dec 26
Akron won MAC title game on this field Dec 1, throwing pass for game-winning TD in last 0:10, in 31-30 win over No. Illinois. Akron is only three hours from Motor City, so Zips will have an edge with the crowd, for sure. Problem for Akron is the 250 yds on ground they gave up to NIU, fourth time this season they allowed 200+ rushing yards. Memphis wants to run the ball.

DeAngelo Williams is the best RB in nation not named Reggie Bush; he played vs MAC team in bowl last year, broke his leg when game was close (28-25), then Tigers got crushed (35-52). Williams' draft position slipped, so he came back for this season Memphis has used 4 different QB's, as first two guys broke their legs, and third guy was not good; they had to go to an option game, as starting QB had been a WR.

This is first-ever bowl for Akron, which was only eligible team to stay home last winter; they have well-balanced offense, while memphis runs the offense with former WR Avery at QB (he was hurt at end of regular season, played thru it and should be fine for this). Zips needed to win last three games to get here, while Memphis was typically-mediocre C-USA team, although they did exceed expectations, especially after the two QBs got hurt

Monday's List of 13: Quick Takes on Christmas Night:
            13) Riddle me this: How is the Lambeau Leap legal, but Chad Johnson gets fined every time he scores a TD? If he were a Packer, would his antics suddenly become acceptable?

            12) How is it that Ravens' home field looks like the fairways at Augusta National, but the Patriots' field looks like they just had a tractor pull on it? Doesn't the league control this?

            11) According to sportsbook.com, the only game where the majority of investors played the Under this weekend was the Jacksonville-Houston game, which went over.

            10) Enough already with the Sirius radio commercials. There must have been 25 of them on Sunday.

            9) What a difference a year makes for Ron Turner, Chicago's offensive coordinator. This time last year, he had just been fired as head coach by U of Illinois. Now, he is OC for one of the best teams in NFL. Good year for Norv's brother.

            8) At the risk of offending a couple women I know, the Rams tackle like fraakin' girls. Letting the 49ers run for 200+ yards in Saturday's loss was inexcusable.

            7) Wonder how much George Clooney makes for Budweiser commercial where does a quick voiceover.

            6) Since 2000, Darren Sharper of the Vikings has 11 more INTs (40) than anyone else in the NFL. Pretty impressive.

            5) Not to be overly bitter, but in Hawai'i Bowl Saturday night, Central Florida was called for six five-yard penalties the whole game (five offsides, one illegal formation). All of these calls were obvious, so they had no subjective penalties called on them the entire game.

Nevada, on other hand, was whistled for 10 penalties for 92 yards, plus had a fumble recovery reversed on a debatable replay challenge. Wolf Pack still won the game, 49-48 in OT, but one of most unevenly officiated games in recent memory.

            4) San Diego didn't make the playoffs, but does anyone think the Chargers aren't one of the best 12 teams in the NFL?

            3) Couldn't someone have gotten Mike Sherman a winter coat for Christmas? Even a light jacket?

            2) Maybe if he were dressed properly, he wouldn't have used his replay challenges (0 for 2, by the way) in the first half. It is amazing how lousy some NFL coaches are with challenges.

            1) Stan Van Gundy, wherever you are, hope you had a Merry Christmas. You deserved better.
