Can you think of any reason other than the specter of the pointspread that would cause them to have a rule that requires the x-point to be kicked?

None at all. The announcer said something about to make the game official they have to kick the extra point. Who knows?

The only thing i can think of is if the other team blocks the PAT and returns it they get two points dont they? I know two points would not have mattered in this game because they were up 3 but thats the only thing i can think of.

I thought this rule applied in college as well. Penn st lost by 2 if they would have blocked and returned the xtra point they would have tied michigan.

Question-is there any sort of tie breaker system for the playoffs which relies on how many points a team scored during the season or perhaps some sort of point differential?
If so, that could account for the necessity of kicking the extra point.

True savage, but then why don't they kick it in OT?

I think there is a subtle difference;in overtime by definition(sudden death or sudden victory-it depends on your point of view ) the first score wins period-that is it. I can see where an extra point would not be required.
However, in a regular season game a td scored on the last play of the game is still considered to have been scored within the framework or context of the regular game itself and thus it is logical that extra point should be kicked;thats how I see it.

I remember that game...it was a december game. My best friend and I were driving back from the Bears/Bucs game in Chicago and turned on a sports radio station from Cleveland and they were talking about it.
