USA Today/Eric Smith
Game of the year: Notre Dame vs. USC — Is there any doubt? Last week in South Bend was a rare case of the game matching the hype. Some others worth mentioning: Arizona State-LSU, Ohio State-Texas, Notre Dame-Michigan State and Arizona State-USC.
Player of the year: Reggie Bush, USC — Whether using his gamebreaking speed or providing a timely push, the Trojans are still No. 1 because of their junior superstar.
Most unsung player: Paul Posluszny, Penn State — The junior linebacker quietly won Big Ten player of the week three straight times and has totaled 82 tackles, 6½ tackles for a loss and two sacks for the Nittany Lions.
Coach of the year: Charlie Weis, Notre Dame — After all the negativity surrounding Tyrone Willingham's firing, Weis has turned the Irish into one of the top teams in the country. Two close losses keep Notre Dame from being the favorite for the Rose Bowl.
Coach most in need of an Alka-Seltzer: Tommy Bowden, Clemson — Before last week's blowout of N.C. State, the Tigers won in the final seconds against Texas A&M, beat Maryland in the final minutes, lost in triple overtime to Miami, lost in overtime to Boston College and lost in the final minute to Wake Forest.
Coach most in need of some offense: Urban Meyer, Florida — His spread offense was en vogue before the start of the year. Now the Gators are struggling to put points on the board and Meyer is feeling the pressure of high expectations.
Biggest surprise: Brian Calhoun, Wisconsin — Calhoun played two seasons at Colorado and was a solid player in the Big 12. After transferring to Wisconsin, the junior has become one of the top running backs in the country.
Biggest disappointment: Purdue defense — The Boilermakers were expected to be part of the Big Ten race behind a defense returning all 11 starters. Instead they have started 2-4 and have allowed almost 35 points per game.
Goodbye award: Michigan and Oklahoma — Both teams started in the top five. Both teams are now out of the poll with three losses. At least the Wolverines have beaten Michigan State and Penn State. Without a healthy Adrian Peterson, the Sooners are struggling just to reach six wins.
Welcome back award: Alabama and Penn State — Down for a couple of years, both these powers are back on the national scene with a bright future ahead.
***
The top-ranked game of the week is in Austin with Texas hosting Texas Tech. Both teams are unbeaten. Both are in the top 10. The winner will probably win the Big 12 South. The question is whether the Red Raiders can hang with the Longhorns, who have been dominant the past few weeks.
Also in the mix are two key clashes that will affect the SEC West. Tennessee travels to Alabama. With two losses already, the Volunteers are reduced to playing spoiler. They'd like nothing more than knock off the unbeaten Crimson Tide, who have not won at home in this series since 1991.
The other game will be a meeting of Tigers in Baton Rouge. LSU has already fallen once in the league, making this a must-win to keep its division title hopes alive. Auburn would like to keep pace with Alabama and play for all the marbles in the final regular-season game at home.
No. 1 Southern California at Washington, 3:30 p.m.
No need for the Trojans to worry about slow starts, fourth-quarter comebacks or a push from Reggie Bush this week. Southern California 49, Washington 19.
No. 2 Texas vs. No. 8 Texas Tech, 3:30 p.m.
You don't usually see a spread of more than two touchdowns when top 10 teams meet. There is a reason, however. The Longhorns should win going away. Texas 45, Texas Tech 21.
No. 3 Virginia Tech at Maryland, 7:30 p.m. (Thursday)
The Terps have been waiting for a year to make amends after losing 55-6 in Blacksburg on a Thursday night. Now the tables are turned, and it may be the Hokies on the short end this time. Virginia Tech 26, Maryland 24.
No. 4 Georgia vs. Arkansas, 12:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs have proven to be the class of the SEC East. After defeating the Razorbacks and then Florida next week, they'll have their spot in the conference championship locked up. Georgia 42, Arkansas 20.
No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 18 Tennessee, 3:30 p.m.
Throw out last week's close game at Ole Miss by the Crimson Tide. All it will do is give the Volunteers hope that they have a chance. Alabama 26, Tennessee 16.
No. 6 Miami vs. Georgia Tech, noon (postponed until Nov. 19)
Good luck to all in Hurricane Wilma's path.
No. 7 LSU vs. No. 15 Auburn, 7:45 p.m.
After narrowly avoiding another fourth-quarter meltdown, LSU coach Les Miles unsuccessfully lobbied the SEC to limit conference games to just 45 minutes. Let's hope he has figured out another solution as his team likely will be in position to blow another late lead. LSU 27, Auburn 17.
No. 9 UCLA vs. Oregon State, 7 p.m.
None of the remaining unbeatens have needed last-minute rallies more than the Bruins. Karl Dorrell and his team can finally breathe easier — for one week. UCLA 34, Oregon State 24.
No. 10 Florida State at Duke, 3:30 p.m.
Expect an angry group of Seminoles after last week's deflating loss to Virginia. Not exactly the scenario the Blue Devils drew up to improve their chance of an upset. Florida State 45, Duke 12.
No. 12 Notre Dame vs. BYU, 2:30 p.m.
Nobody should be surprised if the Irish are a little bit flat this week. It won't matter in the win column, but it should make the game closer than expected. Notre Dame 31, BYU 20.
No. 13 Ohio State at Indiana, noon
It likely won't be this week, but keep an eye on the Hoosiers to pull an upset before the season is over. Blake Powers is a keeper at quarterback, and a bowl berth is still a possibility. Ohio State 31, Indiana 14.
No. 14 Penn State at Illinois, 7 p.m.
For the Nittany Lionns, losing freshman standout Derrick Williams for the season may be a bigger loss than the defeat at Michigan. Penn State 27, Illinois 13.
No. 16 Oregon at Arizona, 7 p.m.
Ducks quarterback Kellen Clemens may not be getting the adoration that Joey Harrington received when in Eugene, but he appears headed for a better career in the NFL. Oregon 33, Arizona 21.
No. 17 Wisconsin vs. Purdue, 3:30 p.m.
Even the biggest Boilermaker fan has to admit this season is lost. It only gets worse with the Badgers, Penn State and Michigan State ahead. Wisconsin 35, Purdue 24.
No. 20 West Virginia at South Florida, 7 p.m. (postponed until Dec. 3)
A second game involving a top 25 team delayed because of Hurricane Wilma.
No. 21 TCU at Air Force, 3 p.m.
Want to know how important turnovers are in football? The Frogs have been outgained by the opposition this season, but are 6-1 by leading the nation in turnover margin and in takeaways. They better hope the luck continues this week. Air Force 24, TCU 23.
No. 22 Michigan State vs. Northwestern, noon
Fans of defense should stay far away from this game. Michigan State's Drew Stanton and Northwestern's Brett Basanez are the top two quarterbacks in the Big Ten. Both team's defenses are at the bottom of the league. One hundred points is possible. Michigan State 50, Northwestern 37.
No. 23 California vs. Washington State, 10:15 p.m.
Anybody thinking the Bears are capable of upsetting USC had better think again. The lack of quarterback play will have them struggling to stay in the rankings at the end of the year. California 31, Washington State 17.
No. 24 Virginia at North Carolina, noon
The Cavaliers have played terribly in their three games on the road. That will have to change against the Tar Heels. Virginia 24, North Carolina 21.
Last week's record: 14-3 (9-8)
This season's record: 107-22 (67-53-3)

Game of the Week
No. 10 Texas Tech at No. 2 Texas — Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Texas -15
And you thought the Big 12 title game was in December. With Oklahoma and Texas A&M looking mediocre, at best, and with both coming to Lubbock, this turns into a one game season for Texas Tech (unless you really believe road games at Baylor and Oklahoma State are dangerous). An upset win over the Longhorns, and the Red Raiders not only have the inside track to the Big 12 title game, it'll have a great shot at going to the national championship.
Mike Leach's offense has been starting to hum cranking out 684 yards and 59 points on a pretty good Kansas State team, but Texas isn't Kansas State. The Longhorns have been so good, they've almost become, as crazy as this sounds, boring, but in a good way for UT fans. Outside of the Ohio State game, there haven't been any thrilling finishes. Every week a Missouri an Oklahoma or a Colorado is supposed to provide a major challenge, and every week Vince Young and the boys come out crushing and killing. Texas Tech provided one of the biggest scares for Mack Brown's club last year, for a half, but Vince Young and Cedric Benson rolled in the second half in a stunning 51-21 win. That's providing even more motivation for the Red Raiders.
The world keeps setting them up, and Texas keeps knocking them down. In all the numbers and big plays from the Texas Tech offense, it's easy to forget that it can bog down when the timing it thrown off, like it was in the second half of the Nebraska game. Texas will throw the timing off.
Prediction: Texas 40 ... Texas Tech 24
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 17 Tennessee at No. 5 Alabama
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Alabama -3.5
It's not Alabama - Auburn and it's not Georgia - Florida, but there's a meanness to this SEC rivalry that goes beyond nasty. These two teams and programs flat-out don't like each other, and there's even more at stake this year with Alabama unbeaten and trying to be part of the Rose Bowl mix. Tennessee would love nothing more than to ruin the Tide's dream season, but it also has to worry about saving its own hide with a 3-2 record and a trip to Notre Dame still ahead. A four-loss season for a team that had national title aspirations a few months ago would be a disaster, but the Vols can still be high on the SEC bowl pecking order by winning out. The jury is still out on how good the Tide is after a clunker of a 13-10 win over Ole Miss. A convincing win this week would show that Mike Shula's team really does deserve to be in the national title discussion.
Prediction: Tennessee 16 ... Alabama 13
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 16 Auburn at No. 7 LSU
Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET
Line:
LSU -6
It's round one of the SEC West tournament with each team still needing to play Alabama. Finally, Auburn gets to play a living, breathing team after winning five straight against no one who'll go to a bowl game. Respect has been hard to come by after the opening day 23-14 loss to Georgia Tech, but a win in Death Valley would launch the Tigers back into national prominence. The other Tigers haven't been pretty, but they've been winning overcoming the heartbreaking overtime loss to Tennessee to beat Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Florida with stunning ease. Yeah, the Gators made it interesting, but the Tiger defense played too well to lose. If LSU loses this week, it's realistically out of the SEC title hunt. As the top one loss team in the BCS, there's a chance to be playing for more than an SEC title by winning out.
Prediction: LSU 20 ... Auburn 16
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Arkansas at No. 4 Georgia
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
Georgia -19.5
It's Georgia's SEC East world and everyone else is just paying rent. With a two game lead on Florida and Tennessee, all the 'Dawgs have to do is hold serve at home and they're playing for the title. But they're looking for more than the SEC title, but they're not getting a whole bunch of national respect thanks to a good, but not scintillating offense and a defense that isn't getting near the credit it deserves. Arkansas is desperate for something positive to turn its season around with wins over only Missouri State and UL Monroe. With winnable games against South Carolina, at Ole Miss and at Mississippi St. ahead, the Hogs can go on big run with a shocking win in Athens.
Prediction: Georgia 27 ... Arkansas 10
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 14 Ohio State at Indiana
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
OSU -16
If Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner really wants to put the football program on the map, this would be a perfect chance. Ohio State is coming off a nice win over Michigan State and could be looking ahead to a tough road trip to Minnesota, while IU is cranking out just enough offense and has just enough fight to make this interesting. The Buckeyes can still win the Big Ten title with a little help from a Penn State loss, and it certainly doesn't want to slip up here. Ohio State is 0-1 on the road this year, and there will be a few moments of panic that it could be 0-2. In the end, the Buckeye receivers will come through with enough big plays to get the tougher-than-expected win.
Prediction: Ohio State 27 ... Indiana 17
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Northwestern at No. 22 Michigan State
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
MSU -11.5
Oh sure, Michigan-Iowa might be the Big Ten's bigger matchup, but Northwestern-Michigan State is the one you really want to watch thanks to nation's third and fourth best offenses in a certain shootout that could crank out over 1,000 yards of total offense. Northwestern has won two straight and is in the ***** of the Big Ten race, but it has a nightmare of a final five games. Michigan State hasn't had a fun few weeks thanks to the heartbreaking overtime loss to Michigan and the meltdown against Ohio State last week. The schedule gets nice and easy for a while, so now's the time John L. Smith's crew has to get rolling.
Prediction: Michigan St. 45 ... Northwestern 31
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 23 Virginia at North Carolina
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
UNC -1
Virginia didn't just shake up the ACC with its 26-21 win over Florida State, it saved it season overcoming two ACC losses to get back in the hunt for a bowl game. With three home dates ahead, even though one is against Virginia Tech, before ending the season at Miami, the Cavaliers can potentially go on a major run with a win against the Tar Heels. UNC ha had two weeks off to sit and sulk over a 69-14 pasting from Louisville. At 1-1 in the conference and with Miami and Virginia Tech still ahead, it's technically possible to be in the mix for the Coastal Division title starting with a win this week.
Prediction: North Carolina 27 ... Virginia 23
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
BYU at No. 9 Notre Dame
Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET
Line:
ND -19
One week after the latest version of the "greatest game of all-time" Notre Dame has to gear it back up for a BYU team that might have found itself in a pounding 24-14 win over Colorado State last week. The Cougars are on a two-game winning streak under new head coach Bronco Mendenhall, but they could use a huge win to kickstart a return to national glory for the proud program. Notre Dame might have started out low in the initial BCS rankings, but it'll move up and up as the weeks go on as long as it keeps winning, and as long as it keeps getting respect from the human polls. A win over BYU might not open many eyes, but a close, tough win won't help.
Prediction: Notre Dame 38 ... BYU 20
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 11 Florida State at Duke
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
FSU -29.5
Even after the 26-21 loss at Virginia, Florida State is still in the driver's seat in the Atlantic Division race just needing to win out to play for the ACC title. Playing against Duke is the perfect cure to get over a loss, and this should mark the beginning of a good run with home dates against Maryland and NC State ahead. Duke has lost four straight and hasn't even been close in ACC play losing to Virginia Tech, Virginia, Miami and Georgia Tech by a combined score of 170 to 24. If FSU's defense tries, Duke will struggle to get 150 yards of total offense. The Noles have way, way too much defensive speed for Blue Devil QB Zack Asack to deal with.
Prediction: Florida State 38 ... Duke 10
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 1 USC at Washington
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
USC -30
How do you gear it back up after playing in one of the greatest games of all-time? USC survived the trip to Notre Dame and can't let down against a Washington team looking to get the Ty Willingham era jump started with what would be one of the biggest upsets ever. The Huskies aren't necessarily horrible; they just can't win. They couldn't get a late defensive stop against Air Force or UCLA, and got bombed on by Oregon last week for a three game losing streak and a brutal slide of 15 losses in the program's last 17 games, and an even more stunning 5-20 record since September of 2003. A win over USC would quickly erase all the bad memories.
Prediction: USC 48 ... Washington 20
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Purdue at No. 19 Wisconsin
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Wisconsin -8
Few under-the-radar games have been better over the past several years than the ones these two have played. Last year, it was the miracle Scott Starks fumble return for a touchdown that sparked the beginning of a horrific stretch for Purdue going 4-9 over the last 13 games. As horrendous as things have been for Purdue, a bowl game is more than likely if they pull off a win in Madison with Illinois and Indiana still on the schedule. For Wisconsin, it's a Big Ten title that it's shooting for after the unbelievable win last week against Minnesota thanks to a blocked punt for a touchdown. Wisconsin will win on a late drive and a long field goal.
Prediction: Wisconsin 34 ... Purdue 31
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 15 Oregon at Arizona
Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
Oregon -10
All of a sudden, Oregon is in the mix for the Pac 10 title after winning three straight since a loss to USC. The schedule shapes up nicely with possible cellar-dweller Arizona this week, and tough games against Cal and Oregon State at home along with a road date at Washington State, so a 10-1 season has become very possible. Arizona would like to change that, as well as its season after a sloppy, ugly 20-16 home loss to Stanford. With three home dates in the next four games, the Wildcats must start to show signs of life and not just keep coming close. There's needs to be a few wins over good teams to get some momentum for 2006.
Prediction: Oregon 30 ... Arizona 17
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 12 Penn State at Illinois
Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
Penn St. -17
Penn State looks to pick up the pieces after a heartbreaking last-second loss to Michigan. The Big Ten title is still there for the taking just needing to win the final four games to get into the BCS, but there are a few landmines with Wisconsin and a road trip to Michigan State ahead. For now, the Nittany Lions need an easy win after battling the last few weeks, and Illinois just might be the remedy. The Illini have had two weeks to prepare after getting blasted 36-13 by Indiana (yes, that Indiana), and desperately needs something to save Ron Zook's first season. Illinois will come out jacked up and play hard for a few quarters, but it won't be enough.
Prediction: Penn State 28 ... Illinois 14
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Oregon State at No. 8 UCLA
Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
UCLA -9
UCLA fans sure are getting their money's worth. The 6-0 Bruins have won their last three games in thrilling, last-drive fashion with yet another heart-stopper in last week's 44-41 overtime win over Washington State. They're slowly climbing up the national rankings, and unlike some of the other non-USC or Texas unbeatens, has their Rose Bowl fate likely in their own hands thanks to the season-ender against the Trojans. But first, they have to deal with a hot Oregon State team that overcame pummelings by Louisville and Arizona State to beat Washington State and Cal and get back in the Pac 10 race. With no USC on the schedule and Arizona, Washington and Stanford ahead, the Beavers can go on a great run with a win in L.A. These are two fun offenses that should put up big numbers, lots of points and come up with lots of big plays in a classic Pac-10 shootout.
Prediction: UCLA 45 ... Oregon State 27
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Washington St. at No. 25 Cal
Saturday at 10:15 p.m. ET
Line:
Cal -11.5
Washington State and Cal has enough talent and enough firepower to beat anyone in the Pac 10, but they're each on losing streaks and in danger of seeing promising seasons slipping further and further away. Washington State has lost three straight, all in the Pac 10, hurt by a stunning home loss to Stanford and an overtime loss to UCLA. With a road trip to USC ahead, along with games against Arizona State and Oregon, the Cougars are in danger of being the nation's best team that won't be going to a bowl game. Cal has suffered two straight crushing losses unable to make a fourth quarter stand against UCLA and unable to complete a pass that mattered against Oregon State. This might be the Pac 10's second most talented team, and it needs to start playing like it. Cal's offense will get back on track and roll up over 500 yards of offense.
Prediction: Cal 38 ... Washington State 24

Week Seven
1:30 p.m. ET (NBC) BYU (3-3) at No. 9 Notre Dame (4-2)
From Clemson sports info director Tim Bourret, a Notre Dame alum ('77): The last time the Irish defeated a No. 1 (Florida State, '93), the game's decisive play saw an ND defensive back wearing No. 22 named Wooden (Shawn) bat down a fourth-down pass thrown by a Heisman Trophy winner (Charlie Ward). Last Saturday, with No. 1 USC facing fourth down, a Heisman Trophy winner completed a pass that was nearly batted down by an Irish defensive back wearing No. 22 named Wooden (Ambrose).
Notre Dame 45, Brigham Young 24
3:30 p.m. ET (ABC) No. 1 USC (6-0) at Washington (1-6)
Imagine, just imagine -- we're talking an En Vogue-like Free your mind/the rest will follow level of imagination here -- that the Huskies upset the Trojans in Seattle. Will the pundits reverse field (yet again) and write, "You see, Ty Willingham was the better coach all along"? Or will they wrestle with the logic (as Louisville fans do every time their team travels) that there's no such thing as a sure thing in college football?
USC 55, Washington 14
Noon ET (ESPN) Northwestern (4-2) at No. 22 Michigan St. (4-2)
Is it just me or is the Big Ten flat-out the most fun conference to watch BY FAR this season? Five incredible games, without even stopping to think: Michigan-Wisconsin, Michigan-Michigan State, Wisconsin-Northwestern, Ohio State-Penn State, Wisconsin-Minnesota and Penn State-Michigan. I know, that's six, but I couldn't stop. Six ... or about five more memorable games than the SEC has given us.
Michigan State 48, Northwestern 34
3:30 p.m. ET (ABC) No. 10 Texas Tech (6-0) at No. 2 Texas (6-0)
Red Raiders coach Mike Leach has a law degree. Do you know what that means? It means that as Leach was sitting through those 80-minute Civil Procedure lectures, he was diagramming plays inside his notebook. Just like you and I did. Now Leach is a success. Those students doing the Jumble, on the other hand, they're wasting their time.
Texas 45, Texas Tech 33
3:30 p.m. ET (CBS) No. 17 Tennessee (3-2) at No. 5 Alabama (6-0)
Which that you've seen recently made your stomach turn more? The shot of the Crimson Tide's Tyrone Prothro landing in the end zone, his leg bent at a 90-degree angle just above the ankle? Or the one of the python that exploded after ingesting an alligator? Which leads to the natural segue of whether Bama, 1-9 against the Vols in their past 10 meetings, is biting off more than it can chew in its quest to go unbeaten through the SEC.
Tennessee 21, Alabama 20
7 p.m. ET (TBS) Oregon St. (4-2) at No. 8 UCLA (6-0)
With the nation's 75th-best scoring defense, the Bruins are living on borrowed time as an unbeaten. Then again, if Maurice Drew and Drew Olson can outscore the Beavers, the Powder Blues are 9-0 when Arizona State visits Nov. 12. The Beavs' Mike Hass leads the nation in receiving yards, despite having just four catches for 17 yards in last week's win at Cal.

Jessica Biel was named "Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire? I mean, is she even the cutest Jessica -- Alba, Simpson, Rabbit -- alive? But that's what I hate about Esquire's SWA series. They decide it by a vote instead of settling it on the field! Two Tigers living under the radar after early-season home losses, each with a future date with an elephant (Alabama), play for the right to keep their BCS hopes alive. My pick? Angelina Jolie. It's a good year for repeat champions.

Do you realize -- trust me, everyone in Lincoln does -- the Cornhuskers are one fumbled-and-lost game-clinching interception (versus Texas Tech) away from being 6-0? Then again, the only docket less taxing than Nebraska's is Leinart's class schedule (you knew I was headed there). What the Huskers do best is stop the run (No. 1 nationally), while Mizzou has an outstanding journalism program.
Nebraska 20, Missouri 18

The most prevalent name in sports right now? How about "A.J.", as in Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk, Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, Florida Marlin pitcher A.J. Burnett and San Diego Chargers quarterback A.J. Feeley? Thus it's refreshing to discover Bulldog quarterback D.J. Shockley, whose exploits, it should be noted, are often recorded in the A.J. (Atlanta Journal) Constitution.

Horned Frogs quarterback Tye Gunn possesses the most apt name in the history of Lone Star State quarterbacks. (You were thinking maybe Major Applewhite?). Speaking of Texarcana, Gunn hails from La Grange, erstwhile home of the infamous Chicken Ranch that inspired both a musical (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and a ZZ Top tune (La Grange). Just let me know if you wanna go.
