I agree it would have been close. The Ref ruled it a fumble. There was no replay in this game. USC would have lost.
No doubt, but I was just saying that after initially thinking that Leinart was lucky that he did fumble (thinking that he had come up short anyway), after watching the replay it was much closer than I thought. Either way, what a game.
Good points Frank!!! Yesterday was a GREAT day in CFB. Not so much gambling wise but just in general. The USC-ND game was a classic. When I saw Lienhart sneak it, I could believe my eyes. What a ballsy call to extend a winning streak. If he doesn't get in Pete Carrol becomes the most second guessed man in America this year! Great day.
It wasn't Pete's call...Leinhart and Bush basicly made the call.
The call was for the spike. The offensive line will push forward no matter what just in case the QB decides to push forward instead and the the defense lays back a bit.
Leinhart turned and asked Bush what he should do. Bush said go for it.
Gutsy call...but one I'd make myself. No way I want overtime in this situation with a FG kicker who probably hasn't had to kick a clutch FG in his career at USC, let alone at South Bend if the situation presented itself.
On ESPN this morning they were discussing if USC can remain undefeated. One of the guys thought they would because they won a game they could have lost. The USC players feel that way.
I think opposing teams think USC is very beatable. Once a team loses their aura of invincibility teams no longer fear them.

Rook I was thinking about that. Many times when the team spikes the ball the linemen stand up. Luckily for Lienart the linemen were on the same page.
I think if that's the case Frank, there are going to be some really disappointed teams. I don't think USC loses a game now....maybe UCLA...but that's a stretch for me.
Can any other team be as patient and almost as perfect as Notre Dame was yesterday? As good as they played...it still wasn't enough.
The funny part with all of it is that the ball went out of bounds, so why would they even need to spike the ball. I was screaming "fake spike" from the beginning. LOL

I know but even the announcers were yelling spike. They didn't know what was going on.
Louisville up 24-7 into the 4th. WVU scores 17 unanswered in the 4th to go to OT. Ends up going 3 OT's with TD's from both teams in the 1st 2. In the 3rd OT, WVU goes in AND gets the 2 pt. conversion. Louisville's ball, they go right in, BUT ARE STOPPED for the 2 pt. conversion, WVU WINS 46-44!!!!!!!!

That's because the announcers were idiots. I guess my main point was, though, that the officials HAD to have explained to Weiss why the game wasn't over, so anyone on ND that actually believed that they were going to spike the ball would have been saying "duh" immediately afterwards.

I was on ND. I was yelling at the TV to the announcers "what the fuck are you talking about".
My kids were looking at me as if I was going crazy. LOL
