good luck with the job hunt Griff, thanks again for helpin.
Fade note: got home too late on Mon to post steelers, and of course I made the Titans an opinion for no good reason, except I thought Houston was due, but they just suck, so it would have been a 4-4 NFL if I didnt screw up, instead of 2-4, so I apologize for that.

miami herald/jeff shain cfb
Jeff Shain's predictions
• Miami 45, Temple 7: Even UM's national-title juggernaut in 2001 called off the dogs on Temple before the margin reached six TDs. Biggest winner on the sideline might be Temple coach Bobby Wallace, who opted to let his contract expire and will leave with what's left of his dignity. (Favorite: UM by 41.)
• LSU 21, Florida 16: Underachieving UF offense vs. underachieving LSU defense that gave up points in bunches to Arizona State and Tennessee. But Tigers have talent to replicate Alabama's defensive blueprint, and Chris Leak's bum wing doesn't instill confidence. (Favorite: LSU by 6.)
• Florida State 27, Virginia 14: Midseason swoon already in progress for Cavs, with back-to-back ACC losses and both frontline OTs out. UVa averaged just 133 rushing yards in past three outings and now faces FSU front chastened from last week's poor showing vs. Wake Forest. (Favorite: FSU by 7.)
• Southern California 37, Notre Dame 24: Irish manage to turn around that 31-point bugaboo -- to 13. Though QB Brady Quinn should move the ball on USC's defense, ND's pass defenders can't stay with Trojans' firepower. Matt Leinart gets a turn to prop up Heisman candidacy. (Favorite: USC by 11 ½.)
• Penn St. 26, Michigan 23: Potential trap here, with Wolverines a cornered 3-3 animal playing at home. But defense has looked sluggish in giving up 23, 31 and 23 points in past three outings. That puts pressure on sluggish offense, which won't get much vs. Lions' D. (Favorite: Michigan by 3 ½.)
• Texas 41, Colorado 17: Can the Horns handle post-Oklahoma euphoria? That might be the only thing standing in their way right now. Buffs were hitting on all cylinders in picking apart Texas A&M, but they will need all that and more to knock off Vince Young & Co. (Favorite: Texas by 17.)
• Louisville 32, West Virginia 27: Take Cardinals out of home comfort, and that potent offense suddenly looks average. After struggling at Kentucky and tanking at South Florida, they visit the Big East's most hostile site. If Mountaineers can play ball-control offense, they have a shot. (Favorite: UL by 7.)
• Last week: 5-2. Meaningless touchdowns? Waning-moments TDs by Wake Forest and UCLA turned an OK spread weekend into a bust. Against spread: 2-5.
• Season: 22-15 (17-19 vs. spread).

Games of the Week
No. 1 USC at No. 9 Notre Dame — Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
USC -11.5
It's not 1993 when Florida State came to South Bend, and it's not 1988 when Miami swaggered in, but it's not all that far off. Notre Dame head coaches are defined by the really big games, and it doesn't get much bigger than this for first year head man Charlie Weis with USC coming in on a 27-game winning streak against an Irish team that had two weeks off to prepare.
Lou Holtz became a legend by winning those games against the 'Noles and 'Canes; Ty Willingham, basically, got fired because his 0-3 record against USC, losing by a combined score of 130 to 37, showed just how far his program was from being among the elite. Weis can show that he and his staff have turned Notre Dame back into a powerhouse with a win this week, while USC could use an impressive victory to get everyone to stop freaking out over having a hard time getting going against Oregon, Arizona State and Arizona.
This will be USC's biggest test all year. Quinn will bomb away for well over 400 yards and get people buzzing that he might be a top five draft pick if he comes out next year, but Leinart will throw for 400 and LenDale White and Reggie Bush will combine for 150 yards on the ground. Notre Dame will play well, but USC will show why it's the defending national champion.
Prediction: USC 44 .. Notre Dame 31

In the Spotlight
No. Colorado at No. 2 Texas
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Texas -17
After thumping Oklahoma last week, the schedule opens up for Texas with, realistically, only four dangerous games left to get to Pasadena. The Big 12 title game, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, and this one against a Colorado team that's playing much better than it's getting any national credit for. Clearly the lead dog in the North pack after an impressive 41-20 win over Texas A&M, Colorado looks to make this part one of a two game series hoping to get to the Big 12 championship. A loss at Miami is the only blemish for Gary Barnett's club which has shown explosiveness on offense, toughness on defense, and a kicking game that's the best in the country. Texas will be on high letdown alert, but the Buffs just might be good enough to ruin the dream season. Don't be shocked if CU pulls off the upset, but Vince Young and the Texas running game will pull away late.
Prediction: Texas 30 ... Colorado 19

No. 11 Florida at No. 10 LSU
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
LSU -6
Call this the SEC's prove-it game, and a possible preview of the SEC title. Can Florida not only win a big game on the road against a team as nasty as LSU? Will the offense finally start to play like it's supposed to? Can LSU show that all the talent is finally starting to come together? Beating Arizona State to start the year was nice, but the Tennessee meltdown is still fresh in everyone's minds. A win over Florida would show that the Tigers really do need to still be considered in the hunt for the SEC title and still need to be considered in the Rose Bowl chase. A win for the Gators means they have the SEC East title in their grasp with the Georgia game up next in two weeks. Florida is a shaken team, but it still has the athletes and the talent to beat LSU if the Tiger offense isn't playing well. Chalk this one up to the LSU defense looking for a statement performance to finally erase memories of Tennessee.
Prediction: LSU 24 ... Florida 16

More Top 25
Wake Forest at No. 14 Boston College
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
BC -14
If this has an ending half as good as last year's clash won by Wake Forest 17-14 on a last minute drive, it'll be worth watching. BC has somewhat quietly rolled through its season, with only a bad second half against Florida State standing in the way of a 6-0 start. It survived overtime at Clemson and easily dispatched of Virginia, and now it looks to get by Wake Forest before getting Virginia Tech 11 days later. Wake Forest changed up quarterbacks and changed up its season beating Clemson 31-27 and giving Florida State a rough time. If the Demon Deacons can somehow get by BC, it has NC State at home followed up by a certain win at Duke, meaning a bowl game is still possible. Wake Forest is playing better, but it doesn't have enough on offense to make much of a dent in the BC defense.
Prediction: Boston Col. 31 ... Wake Forest 14

No. 23 Wisconsin at No. 22 Minnesota
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
No Line
The series started in 1907 is for more than Paul Bunyan's Axe, it's a Big Ten elimination game. Minnesota overcame a loss to Penn State to beat yearly nemesis Michigan to jump back in the hunt for the conference title, while Wisconsin looks to pick up the pieces after Tyrell Sutton and Northwestern blew apart the Badger defense for more than 600 yards in a 51-48 Wildcat win. These are two of the nation's most entertaining teams, for good and bad, with occasionally sloppy defense and fantastic running games led by All-America candidates Laurence Maroney and Brian Calhoun. Minnesota desperately needs this win with Ohio State, Michigan State and at Iowa still to go. With no Ohio State on the slate and Penn State coming up, the Badgers can win at least a share of the Big Ten title by winning out.
Prediction: Minnesota 38 ... Wisconsin 34
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 6 Alabama at Ole Miss
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
'Bama -12.5
Alabama has been everyone's darling over the last two weeks after blowing up Florida in a near-perfect 31-3 game. Was that win overrated? Is Florida simply average, while everything came together for Alabama at the right time? Beating Ole Miss might not prove once and for all that the Tide needs to belong in the national title discussion, but it would keep the positive momentum rolling. The Rebels broke a three-game losing streak with a dominant 27-7 win over The Citadel, but head coach Ed Orgeron needs a name-win to get his era rolling. With a home game and likely win against Kentucky next week, a win here would put Ole Miss right back in the hunt for a bowl.
Prediction: Alabama 27 ... Ole Miss 13
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 16 Michigan St. at No. 15 Ohio St.
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
OSU -6.5
Penn State might be the lead dog in the Big Ten pack at the moment, but this week's battle between Ohio State and Michigan State will determine who gets the honor of being a very, very close number two. With the Nittany Lions coming to East Lansing to end the year, MSU can win at least a share of the Big Ten title by winning out. Ohio State's defense has played at a national title level, but the offense hasn't executed when it needed to in losses to Texas and Penn State. The Buckeyes still have Big Ten title dreams, but they need to keep winning and must get a little help along the way. There should be more points than many expect, and plenty of dramatic big plays.
Prediction: Ohio State 31 ... Michigan State 23
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Kansas State at No. 13 Texas Tech
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
Tech -15
Every great season has a moment when the team gets the one big break needed to spark something special. Texas Tech got it last week in the win over Nebraska with a forced fumble off a Le Kevin Smith interception to keep the game alive, and Cody Hodges took advantage with a game-winning touchdown pass with :12 to play. Now the Red Raiders have to avoid a letdown with the likely showdown for the Big 12 South title coming up next week at Texas. K-State got over a crushing loss to Oklahoma by coming up with a brilliant defensive performance against Kansas, holding the Jayhawk offense to 236 yards of total offense and three points. The 'Cats are 4-1, but they're an unimpressive 4-1, and a win in Lubbock would do wonders for their stature.
Prediction: Texas Tech 34 ... Kansas State 17
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 7 Miami (FL) at Temple
Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
Line:
Miami -41
On FSN
The certain blowout takes on a little bit of intrigue as this is the first game for Temple after head coach Bobby Wallace announced he won't be back after this season. Will that somehow inspire the Owls to come up with a decent performance? If Temple isn't the worst team in the country, it's not far off. Take away a 19-16 loss to Western Michigan and the Owls have lost by an average of 55.6 to 9.4. Miami comes in red hot with a four game winning streak. Is Kyle Wright progressing into an ACC championship caliber quarterback? He hasn't been tremendous with a few mediocre performances, like the 13 of 26, 173-yard, one interception game against USF and 255 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions against Duke.
Prediction: Miami 66 ... Temple 0
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Oregon State at No. 18 Cal
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Cal -16
Cal might have lost to UCLA 47-40 last week, but it showed that it's a dangerous team that has to be considered right in the mix for the Pac 10 title with USC still ahead on the slate. The Bears rolled up 288 rushing yards on the Bruins and 545 yards of total offense, but the special teams were lousy and UCLA RB Maurice Drew had an All-America performance. The Bears need to get their groove back with two straight home games, getting the Beavers this week and Washington State next week before showdowns at Oregon and against USC, but they can't look ahead.
Prediction: California 40 ... Oregon State 27
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 19 Louisville at West Virginia
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
L'Ville -7
If USF fails to go wire-to-wire in the Big East, the winner of this game will likely be the conference's representative in the BCS. This is a classic example of strength vs. strength, Louisville's Top 10 offense against West Virginia's Top 10 defense, played out in one of college football's livelier venues. These two schools haven't met in 12 years, but don't be surprised if this becomes a very entertaining rivalry over the next few seasons. The Mounties sit atop the conference, but limped home from last week's soggy 27-14 win over Rutgers. This will be a tight game for four quarters.
Prediction: Louisville 35... West Virginia 27
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 8 Penn State at Michigan
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Michigan -3
Penn State woke everyone up with a 44-14 blowout win over Minnesota, and then it showed it's a national player again with a stirring defensive performance in last week's 17-10 win over Ohio State. While the rankings are getting better and the respect is there, there's still a sense of wanting a bit more. Can Joe Pa's boys pull off a really big road win? Does it have enough on offense to get past Michigan, Purdue, Wisconsin and Michigan State? Is beating Michigan in the Big House even that big a deal this year? The Wolverines got over a loss to Wisconsin with a win over Michigan State to get back in the Big Ten race, and then Minnesota ran away with a heartbreaking win last week, putting the Big Blue bowl hopes in serious jeopardy without a win this week. For the first time in a long time, everyone in the Big Ten is rooting for Michigan to win to knock Penn State off the Big Ten top spot.
Prediction: Michigan 26 ... Penn State 20
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Washington at No. 20 Oregon
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Oregon -16
There was a time not all that long ago when this would've been the battle for Pac 10 supremacy. After a few mediocre years, Oregon announced that it' back with a great win at Arizona State last week to put itself in a great position to finish second in the Pac 10 as long as UCLA gets tripped up along the way. The Ducks don't play the Bruins, but they get Cal in Eugene in a few weeks and now has to focus on not letting down against Washington and Arizona. Washington had two weeks off to rest up after a heartbreaking last minute 21-17 loss to UCLA, and it needs to find a way to get a tough road win this week with USC and at Arizona State up next. Oregon will be sluggish for about a half, than then all of the offensive weapons will explode while the tremendous defensive front four will keep the UW runners in check. However, look for the Husky offense to put up some big numbers through the air.
Prediction: Oregon 34 ... Washington 17
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 12 UCLA at Washington State
Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET
Line:
UCLA -5.5
On FSN
UCLA tries to break a four-game losing streak to the Cougars, and stay alive in the Pac 10 race, after two stirring last minute comebacks to beat Washington and California. The schedule works out well for the Bruins with Oregon State at home next week followed up by road dates against Stanford and Arizona before dealing with ASU and USC, but the dream season will be in big jeopardy against a Washington State team they haven't beaten in the last four tries. The Cougars are looking to bounce back after blowing a 31-3 lead to Oregon State in a 44-33 loss and gagging even worse against a lousy Stanford team. The season has to turn back around this week with road trips to Cal and USC in the following two weeks, followed up by home dates with Arizona State and Oregon.
Prediction: Washington State 34 ... UCLA 30
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 4 Florida St. at Virginia
Saturday at 6:45 p.m. ET
Line:
FSU -7
All of a sudden, the tough ACC games for Florida State are dwindling down to a precious few, with little standing in the way of an Atlantic Division title. A win by the 'Noles means there's only one more tough ACC road game left, at Clemson, to go along with home dates with Maryland and NC State, and a scrimmage at Duke. In other words, Coastal Division Virginia might be the Atlantic's last hope. The Cavaliers haven't played well all year and are coming off ACC losses to Maryland and Boston College. With everyone talking more about a cheap shot from tackle Brad Butler on BC's Mathias Kiwanuka instead of the team, these aren't great times for the program. A win over Florida State would change all of that. Bobby Bowden has a national title contender, and it's going to play like it.
Prediction: Florida State 31 ... Virginia 17
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 21 Auburn at Arkansas
Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
Auburn -7.5
After the opening day loss to Georgia Tech, Auburn has been beating up on bad team after bad team, getting better and better while fattening up its record. With all due respect to Arkansas, Ole Miss and Kentucky, it's a three game season for the tigers with at LSU, at Georgia and Alabama ahead, so the goal is to keep improving as the top sleeper in the SEC race. The defense has been outstanding, allowing 24 points over the last four games, but now it gets a bit more of a test against the Hogs. Last week's 44-15 win over UL Monroe was nice, but a win over Auburn would get it back in the mix for the a bowl game. Auburn won't have a walk in the park, but the defense will get the job done.
Prediction: Auburn 27 ... Arkansas 14
Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
No. 5 Georgia at Vanderbilt
Saturday at 6:45 p.m. ET
Line:
UGA -16
Georgia took its spot as the lead dog in the SEC East race with an impressive defensive performance in a 27-14 win at Tennessee. With Florida ahead in two weeks after a home game against Arkansas, the Dawgs have to keep their focus with a great shot at being unbeaten going into the regular season finale at Georgia Tech. Vanderbilt has cooled off since starting off 4-0 with a crushing loss to MTSU followed up by a rough outing against LSU. Hope for a bowl game is quickly slipping away with only two more home games, this week and then against Kentucky in a few weeks. This is still a dangerous team with, arguably, the SEC's best quarterback, Jay Cutler, and the confidence to think it can win a game like this.
Prediction: Georgia 30 ... Vanderbilt 15

Week 7
3:30 p.m. ET (NBC) No. 1 USC (5-0) at No. 9 Notre Dame (4-1)
Snooze-alarm the echoes. It's been 12 years since Notre Dame last knocked off a top-ranked team (Notre Dame 31, Florida State 24) and 17 years (to the day, in fact) since the Irish upset another dominant power (Notre Dame 31, Miami 30). Those Hurricanes were more imposing than these Trojans. Then again, those Irish had Frank Stams, Michael Stonebreaker and Chris Zorich. These Irish are a year away, defensively.
USC 45, Notre Dame 42
3:30 p.m. Et (ABC) No. 24 Colorado (4-1) at No. 2 Texas (5-0)
My somewhat unscientific method to calibrate the 2006 Rose Bowl participants: add each team's national ranking in scoring offense and scoring defense. The two teams with the lowest sums are invited. Thus far that would be the Longhorns (4 + 8) and Virginia Tech (12 + 1). Now, if any starter from either team incorrectly adds those sums, that team is DQ'd and No. 3 Texas Tech (1 + 16) is tendered the invite.
Texas 26, Colorado 21
3:30 p.m. ET (CBS) No. 11 Florida (5-1) at No. 10 LSU (3-1)
Urban Meyer may be an offensive genius, but he needs a remedial text-messaging course. Reportedly Meyer text'ed blue-chip QB Tim Tebow the following: TT: If we were scoring 50 points a game, we wouldn't need you. Obviously we need an athlete that's the right fit. National Championship, Heisman, it's all waiting for you. Urban Meyer." I mean, who uses "obviously" in a text message? And that last phrase? It should read, "All 4 U. UM". Geez.
LSU 19, Florida 17
Noon ET (ABC) No. 16 Michigan St. (4-1) at No. 16 Ohio St. (3-2)
Ohio State needs a hug. That's what happens when the team from Columbus absorbs two losses before Columbus Day. Drew Stanton leads the Big Eleven's (you can't expect me to riff on arithmetic two games above and then be mathematically inaccurate here, now can you?) best offense against A.J. Hawk and the conference's stingiest D. Seriously. The Buckeyes are horrible tippers. I've seen it.
Ohio State 23, Michigan State 20
Noon ET (ESPN) No. 23 Wisconsin (5-1) at No. 22 Minnesota (5-1)
Headline I'd like to have seen on the recent story concerning the Minnesota Vikings' alleged sex cruise: "IF THIS BOAT'S A ROCKIN', DON'T BOTHER DOCKIN.'" The Vikes, by the way, have lent entirely new meaning to the term "purple pros(e)." What? Huh? Oh, yeah, Paul Bunyan's Axe. This indoor game will have an ArenaBall-like score.

Recently a college football writer, referencing Notre Dame wideout Jeff Samardzija and Nittany Lion linebacker stud Dan Posluszny, noted that "it's quite a year for ethnic names." Because there are non-ethnic names? (Can it, Malcolm X fans). I dunno, but I do know that Posluszny stuffed the Buckeyes last Saturday and turned 21 Monday, so it's been quite a week for ethnic-named linebackers.

Don't you love how Major League shortstops have adopted Paul Revere's "One if by land, two if by sea" approach to rescuing folks in Beantown? Last April, Alex Rodriguez saved a boy from being hit by a bus and earlier this week Nomar Garciaparra fished two women (who were not, as I'd first assumed, castaways from the Minnesota Vikings sex party) out of Boston Harbor. Eagles' final tuneup before Oct. 27 ACC showdown in Blacksburg.

6 p.m. ET (FSN) No. 12 UCLA (5-0) at Washington St. (3-2)
You may be wondering why the unbeaten Bruins are only a six-point favorite against a team that lost at home to Stanford. Well, UCLA is winless in its last four visits to the Palouse. More pertinently, the Bruins are 105th nationally versus the run while the Cougars' Jerome Harrison (148.2 yards per game) is third in the nation in rushing.

Noon ET (ABC) Kansas St. (4-1) at No. 5-0 Texas Tech (13)
Let me get all Hank Goldberg on ya: Red Raiders are 23-3 versus unranked teams in the Mike Leach-era with an average margin of victory of 23.7 points (the spread is 13.5). Now let me get all Adam Goldberg (in Saving Private Ryan) on ya': "[bleeped] up beyond all recognition." What, you expected Whoopi Goldberg? You expected me to quote Ghost?

3:30 p.m. ET (ABC) No. 19 Louisville (4-1) at West Virginia (5-1)
This game, despite my best efforts, has not been dubbed as "The Revenge of Pittsnogle!" Remember? Albuquerque regional? Just seven months ago? Louisville 93, West Virginia 85 in OT? The Mountaineers sank 18 3-pointers that day. If they need to rely on 3s as much this afternoon, that spells trouble.
