Harmon Forecast
Week 6 - Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005
*Baltimore 20 Cleveland 16 -- Ray Lewis remains, but the Ravens' defense isn't as feared as it used to be. Still, it's good enough to slow down the Browns' anemic offense.
Minnesota 21 *Chicago 20 -- The Bears' offense got off to a quick start, but rookie QB Kyle Orton is suffering growing pains. The Vikings' offense continues to struggle in the post-Randy Moss era but should be well-rested following a Week 5 bye.
N.Y Giants 28 *Dallas 21 -- It hasn't taken long for Eli Manning to establish himself. The Cowboys will have their hands full trying to stop the Giants' powerful offense, which should be refreshed from a Week 5 bye.
Carolina 24 *Detroit 21 -- Everybody thought Carolina, which endured several key injuries last year, would be a Super Bowl contender once again. Losing Kris Jenkins on defense has hurt, but the Panthers have enough offense to win here.
*Kansas City 24 Washington 17 -- Washington has won some close games, but don't buy into its early-season success. The Chiefs, rested coming off a bye, have many offensive weapons and the home-field advantage.
Atlanta 21 *New Orleans 17 -- Playing in San Antonio is a better alternative for New Orleans than playing home games at the opponent's stadium. But the Falcons have a good offense and an impressive defense, which should power Atlanta to victory.
*Pittsburgh 21 Jacksonville 17 -- The Steelers are solid on offense and defense, plus they'll have home-field advantage. The Jags' rush defense has been suspect (e.g. gave up 175 yards to the Broncos in Week 4).
*Tampa Bay 24 Miami 18 -- This intrastate rivalry includes rookie running backs from Auburn -- Miami's Ronnie Brown and Tampa Bay's Cadillac Williams. But all eyes will be on Ricky Williams, who makes his 2005 debut.
Cincinnati 24 *Tennessee 20 -- The Bengals are a force both on offense and defense. They'll try to knock off the Titans, who still are feeling the effects of key offseason changes.
*Buffalo 17 N.Y Jets 14 -- The Jets and Bills both have quarterback issues, but the advantage goes to the Bills, who have home-field advantage.
*Denver 24 New England 23 -- The Patriots continue to regroup after losing key players on offense and defense. The Broncos have been strong on the ground and should be able to take advantage of New England's makeshift defense.
San Diego 28 *Oakland 21 -- The Chargers' offensive weapons -- i.e. Tomlinson, Brees, Gates -- should be too much for the Raiders to handle, even with Oakland coming off a bye week.
*Seattle 24 Houston 17 -- One of the league's most inept offenses (Houston) will try to keep up with one of the most productive. But it won't.
Week 6 - Monday, Oct. 17, 2005
*Indianapolis 31 St. Louis 21 -- The Colts' surprising defense will try to make the St. Louis offense work for its yards. This will be an ideal opportunity for Manning & Co. to bust out.
* -- Home Team

USA Today.com/Eric Smith
No. 1 Southern California at No. 9 Notre Dame, 3:30 p.m.
History shows us that Notre Dame could be the biggest challenge to the Trojans and their 26-game winning streak. The Irish have eight wins against top-ranked teams and long ago ended the record run by Oklahoma at 47 games and have stopped long ones by Texas (30) and Army (25) during their history. Southern California 31, Notre Dame 26.
No. 2 Texas vs. No. 24 Colorado, 3:30 p.m.
The Buffaloes already have played at Miami and hung tough without much help from the offense. This will be a greater challenge unless all the Longhorn faithful are still celebrating last week's laurels. Texas 31, Colorado 17.
No. 4 Georgia at Vanderbilt, 7:15 p.m.
Doubters of the Bulldogs and D.J. Shockley were quieted with the win at Tennessee. But it will take a win against nemesis Florida for Georgia to believe it can run the table. Georgia 34, Vanderbilt 12.
No. 5 Florida State at Virginia, 7:45 p.m.
Ten years ago, the Cavaliers handed the second-ranked Seminoles their first defeat in the ACC. A win this year would be the biggest in Al Groh's tenure and might take the scowl off his face. Don't hold your breath, however. Florida State 28, Virginia 17.
No. 6 Miami (Fla.) at Temple, 1 p.m.
If nobody attends Temple games, do they really count in the standings? That argument didn't help Bobby Wallace, who announced this will be his final season with the Owls. Miami (Fla.) 52, Temple 3.
No. 7 Alabama at Mississippi, noon
Pardon the Crimson Tide if they are looking past Ole Miss this week. Tennessee is up next and Alabama has not beaten its neighbor to the north at home since 1991. Alabama 27, Mississippi 13.
No. 8 LSU vs. No. 13 Florida, 3:30 p.m.
Les Miles and Urban Meyer are learning quickly how difficult it is to reach the high expectations of fans in the SEC. It will only get worse for the loser. After two road wins, LSU gets to make amends for its meltdown against Tennessee in front of the home fans. LSU 24, Florida 14.
No. 10 Penn State at Michigan, 3:30 p.m.
Don't look now, but the Nittany Lions are alone at the top of the Big Ten standings. And they're bowl-eligible for just the second time in six years. This could be the game that propels Penn State to an unbeaten season. Even with all their troubles, the Wolverines are dangerous — as Michigan State found out. Michigan 17, Penn State 16.
No. 11 Texas Tech vs. Kansas State, noon
The Red Raiders are in rare air, rising to their highest poll ranking since 1977. Give credit to coach Mike Leach, who changes quarterbacks every year and get results with his high-powered passing game. Texas Tech 42, Kansas State 24.
No. 12 UCLA at Washington State, 6:30 p.m.
Dangerous spot for the undefeated Bruins. The win against California might cause them to be overconfident against the Cougars, who lost at home to Stanford. UCLA 31, Washington State 28.
No. 14 Boston College vs. Wake Forest, noon
Don't expect to see any late chop blocks on BC defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka from the Demon Deacons. Virginia taught everyone that lesson after Brad Butler's cheap move inspired the Eagles. Boston College 26, Wake Forest 13.
No. 15 Ohio State vs. No. 17 Michigan State, noon
Drew Stanton can make his Heisman case against one of the better defenses in the country. That's assuming, of course, that the Spartans defense can get off the field enough to give him the ball. Ohio State 30, Michigan State 21.
No. 16 California vs. Oregon State, 3:30 p.m.
The Bears failed in their first test of the season at UCLA. This week is more of an open-book quiz. California 38, Oregon State 16.
No. 19 Louisville at No. 25 West Virginia, 3:30 p.m.
High expectations surrounded the Cardinals when they entered the Big East. Already losers at South Florida, they likely will miss out on the BCS with a loss against the Mountaineers. West Virginia 28, Louisville 27.
No. 20 Auburn at Arkansas, 7 p.m.
First road game for the Tigers comes in one of the tougher environments in the SEC. The Razorbacks have recovered from their big loss to USC last month and are primed for an upset. Auburn 24, Arkansas 23.
No. 21 Oregon vs. Washington, 3:30 p.m.
The Ducks begin the second half of their schedule off a huge win at Arizona State. Only California next month stands in the way of a 10-1 schedule. Oregon 40, Washington 19.
No. 22 Minnesota vs. No. 23 Wisconsin, noon
Fortunes quickly changed for the Gophers and Badgers last week. Minnesota is still in the Big Ten race after winning at Michigan. Wisconsin lost its share of the conference lead with its loss at Northwestern. It will be hard for Barry Alvarez's team to regroup this quickly. Minnesota 31, Wisconsin 27.
Last week's record: 12-5 (9-7-1)
This season's record: 93-19 (58-45-3)
