I’m still puzzled as to how Florida lost Sunday to St. Louis in 20 innings. The Marlins scored five times in the 9th inning to tie the game at 6-6 and then proceeded to put up nothing but goose eggs for the next 11 frames. The stranded 21 base runners as they couldn’t take advantage of 16 walks issued by St. Louis pitching. But when you are going badly like we were this past weekend, those are the games you never win. The bottom line tonight is that Florida comes off a game in which seven members of their bullpen threw a combined 13 1/3rd innings. In their last four games since last Thursday, the Marlins have employed 15 pitchers that didn’t start throwing a total of 22 innings. Justin Wayne comes off the disabled list where he was nursing a pulled hamstring and fills in for A.J. Burnett in the rotation (Sunday’s loser Carl Pavano was originally supposed to make the start tonight). Florida is 2-6 in game #1 of a new series this year. Arizona has won 12/16 in this series. Teams with Elmer Dessens have won four straight against the fish. Dessens personally is 3-0 lifetime with Florida. The Diamondbacks are 15-4 in Arizona against Florida since 1997 having gone 6-0 the past two years. Granted the D-backs do come off a doubleheader but should have some momentum after yesterday’s sweep at Shea where they received excellent starting pitching (Webb & Johnson) and scored 13 runs on 18 hits. While the Marlins just played seven straight days including a 20-inning affair on Sunday, Arizona had off Saturday (rain out), and last Monday. Wayne might be the sacrificial lamb tonight for a beleaguered Florida bullpen.
