Game: Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves Jul 6 2005 7:05PM
Prediction: Chicago Cubs
Reason: At 7:05 pm our selection is on the Chicago Cubs over the Atlanta Braves. If you go back the last 12 starts for these starters (the last six for Smoltz and the last six for Prior) their teams' records are 10 - 2 during that time. If nothing else, that should convince you that we're seeing two of the NL's absolute best in this matchup. Of course one of them (Smoltz) made the All-Star team and the other did not. But it was not because Prior is not an all-star caliber pitcher. Rather its impossible to give a guy an all-star nod when he's been injured most of the first half of the season, no matter how talented he may be. Prior will no doubt see many an all-star game in years to come, and he will out-pitch Smoltz tonight. Smoltz left his last start after six innings due to a tender hamstring so I have to wonder if he'll be completely healthy for this game. But in any event, at the current odds, Prior is a steal since he's always capable of throwing a shutout. Take the Cubs. As always, good luck...Al McMordie. And don't miss my American League False Favorite of the Month, as I'm focusing on another Underdog that should be favored! It's available right now.
Game: Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates Jul 6 2005 7:05PM
Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies
Reason: After dropping 7 of 8 games, Philadelphia has begun to turn things around recently while winning 2 of their last 4. Wednesday's battle in Pittsburgh is a perfect opportunity to continue these winning ways as they square of a slight road dogs against Pirate's ace lefty, Mark Redman. We find Philadelphia at a solid 16-10 against southpaws with an amazing team Batting Average of just under .300%- at .294%- and averaging 5.4 runs per game, both of which are team-leading numbers! Redman finds himself slightly favored, mainly due to the home field advantage and the fact that he's 3-0 against Philadelphia over his last 3 starts against them, however, we're willing to toss those games out as they occurred awhile back, the most recent in 2003. Philadelphia's bullpen needs to wake up and help the winning cause as they have a 1.37 WHIP this season, and interestingly, we find Pittsburgh at 1-17 against squads with a bullpen whose WHIP falls between 1.350 to 1.450 this season, losing those games by an average of 3 runs! Backing Philadelphia and taking all the value.
