If someone's units are $5 for example, what motivation do they have for posting an opinion. Just because someone has less and can't afford to risk an exorbitant amount doesn't mean they handicap any less then the big capper. Their opinion on a game is just as important here at BC as a BIG Hitter. What I am concerned with is some being intimidated to post an opinion, especially if it differs from a BIG bet.
Wally, some might disagree. The best cappers are the cappers that don't bet. My brother and I talk sports every day. He doesn't bet. His logic is strictly as an informed sports fan. He doesn't allow $$$$ to cloud his judgement.

You don't have to bet a Dime to be a good capper. If you make a wager that you MUST win chances are you will lose. Chasing = more loses. A $100 player might get away with that dime bet the first time. I'm certain the first time he loses he'll chase.

This is a great thread Coverboy. Thanks for making it.

        Frank,

If that isn't the total truth my friend.

Rented Mule-while I would agree with some of what you say, I am not so sure it applies to betting with Offshores.
For one thing, if you bet with an Offshore, which as stated is of questionable legality in the states, and win some money and don't report it to the IRS and somehow you you get caught, do you really think the IRS is going to go after the Offshores? I kind of doubt it.
Sure locals get busted and sometimes the bettors walk away, but to say that "taking the bets is illegal rather than placing the bets" implies that betting on sports outside of Nevada is ok.
Are prostitutes always the ones who get arrested and NEVER the johns?
Don't be so naive to believe that there is not least the possibility that some government officials and/or IRS people monitor these chatboards or even that there might be some jealous people out there who might suggest to the IRS to monitor these boards.
As you know I am no kid, and I can think of quite a few incidents in life in general where folks thought they could get away with something and in the end found out there assumption was wrong and paid the price.
Even though this is not related, I can one remember several times driving on a deserted highway or road in the middle of the night, going 5-10 miles or so over the speed limit and being issued a speeding ticket. I gambled, figuring no cops would be out, and if they were, they wouldn't bother to stop me under the circumstances;I guessed wrong!
Some folks get gratification over "catching" people doing something;we don't live in a perfect society.

            I agree 100% as well.
The only thing I might add is not all people may want to limit their variance between 1 and 5 stars.

Frank - most of your NBA picks were 1-5 stars and I know you had 1 10 star. Did you have any others between 5 and 10 stars?

I know Chuck's MLB picks have ranged from a minimum of $500 to at least $4000 as I recall. That would be 1 to 8 stars. Don't know if he has posted higher amounts.

So maybe 1-10 stars is not unreasonable?
            Just a thought.

I agree this is a great thread.

In this whole age of internet everything sometimes I really wish I could look the guys that post in here in the eye and really see what their made of, sometimes I think we would be very surprised. I have honestly made friends at this place and its because of the stability and integrity with which they conduct their "gambling" lives. I am very thankful there are many more quality posters at this site than anything else and those people will keep this forum on the up and up. Hopefully I can be a part of that.

Thanks for the reminder CB, always good to re-think things. You did it in a very tactful way as well, hopefully others will take some notes.

cover , great post!!! your right on the money (no pun intended)...frank , i agree , people who throw those kind of numbers out are often looking for attention and don't actually bet that kind of money...if he did , so be it , it's his choice and hopefully he can back those agressive plays...i just hope everybody stays within their limitations and doesn't get sucked into big plays and then have to chase...

                  Rwall, Frank, and esteemed colleagues
This is a good point- Look at the number of views for a 5000 bet vs any other bet. It gets more attention is what I am hearing. This should not make any difference on the decision of whether to play it or not -yet it does to many. I'm with ya on the big play- says one. Can't go with ya on this one says another. You think this rhetoric is found on another small play thread- generally not.
I love to give reasons for why I select a play and I think I have about a dozen threads started.(hard to believe but true) I wish to present both sides of the play and give my pick which is valued by my perception of this game. Then ask for others perceptions of the play presented - not an abundance of good lucks which is also fine but uninformative (also may demonstrate that they took the other side or I would not play this game.) If plays were in the thread- NY vs KC. Easy for one to fine and get the info needed. I think B/C did this awhile back and it prevents grandstanding and reduces threads that are meant to bring attention to oneself.
Thats all I got to say. I need to get on the road and play some golf at world of woods in Fla. for the next several days so all take care and thanks for your concerns in this thread.

I agree with CB's points. The only reason to post dollar amounts is to show off. Further, if you want anyone to pay attention, your betting pattern and rating pattern should be consistent. All the time we see on this site people talking about "betting it all" or cleaning out their accounts. Trust me on this: that's the surest way to wipe out your whole gambling budget and get yourself into trouble. Why? Because once you "bet it all" and win, you are certain to do it again. Eventually, if you "bet it all" you will lose it all.

I believe in steady as she goes. You CAN win by betting sports but only if you are willing to grind it out over the long haul and bet in consistent increments. I bet the same unit on every game in a particular sport and vary my units from 1-5 (just like I post) with almost all plays being 1 unit. This discipline has saved me from getting killed when I bet on emotion. Besides, going four or five times your normal bet on rare occasions IS a lot of money while still not costing you more than the equivalent of four or five losers.

I suspect people will keep throwing dollar amounts around and that none of them are telling the truth. I suspect the people betting the most money are the ones that are using units and being rather low key.

About a year ago I was on a plane that hadn't left the gate. Behind me was a goof on a cell phone loudly telling the other party about all of his football bets that day. I was shocked at this brazenness. For the same reason, I don't think you should advertise to the world on a website that you just scored thousands and thousands of dollars.

One other point to FrankB: You're right. Gambling ruins lives. Except if you win. Then it's great. I sincerely believe winning is possible if you use your head, stay disciplined and never EVER chase losses.

Thanks to CoverBoy for a great thread.
(None of this is meant to be an attack on any particular poster as the guy who may have provoked all of this is a good contributor.)

All I can add is that anyone short of JesusChrist Himself would never sway me from betting anything more on any game than I would normally ..

You are correct. I had one 10* play. All my other plays were 1-5*. Most were 1* and 2* plays.
