swearing off gambling after a losing night is like swearing off drinking on a sunday morning with a hangover......Its a great idea at the time, but once the night time comes around, you'll be kickin back with that beer

A great handicapper once told me "Sometimes it's not what you play, but what you don't play." Take a break for a while and take up a new hobby to do when when things start going this way, to help get your mind off things.
Goodluck buddy in whatever you decide to do!

        money management.....

        hmmmm.....

here's my take on the whole subject

first, it's much easier to use "money management" if your playing online and you are required to pay upfront for your wagers.

obviously, pay your rent, utilities, and ISP...lol, before anything.

if your using guido, things can get out of hand before you know it. i consider that like playing with monopoly money, and i stopped that almost ten years ago when online wagering hit.

guido takes your calls about 30 minutes a day....shaves a 1/2 point, won't make a parlay....and if he does the odds are crap.

money management in life, and money management in gambling are two different things......

if you dont have coin.....let's say $500.....that you can literally piss away and not miss.....as if you had an outrageous night at the titty bar, then you should not gamble.

im 35, been gambling since the first day i went to college in 1987......ive had my ups and downs, but i always recognize that gambling is a hobby and should always be treated as such.

if your finding yourself in financial trouble because of it, then talk to your family, or maybe a close and trusted friend.... and get some help, because it can easily ruin your life.

best of luck to you.....for real.

my suggest, walk away for awhile clear your head. Gather some $$$ you arent afraid to spend. Then if/when your ready give it a shot. Have a system, dont vary from it. Remember betting is 24/7 365. Note no ups or downs should ever force you to quit. IMO you cant have enough coin to quit and you cant or shouldnt ever be down enough to quit. If your in either of these situations your doing something wrong. BOL in the future and just cause your not playing games dont mean you have to be a stranger to the site.

                King T, GREAT POST!!!!

Regarding money management, I've echoed your statement many times. Money management discipline is much easier using online sportbooks. Each time you logon you see your balance.

Secondly, you get better odds. I play primarily with Pinnacle. If you can't win at Pinny you shouldn't be betting. They have very competitive lines. They also have -105 lines. I rarely lay -110. Greatly increasing you odds on winning.

I advice all BC member is stop using local book and start using online books if possible.

I agree with this if you can not control your gambling or your money management .. but there are some advantages to using locals .. I have never used offshore and always have used locals .. but then again, I have been doing this a very long time and it is tough to break old habits .. I use 3 locals ... Why should I allow offshore to hold my money?? offshore is not going to be moving lines the way my locals do ... Chances of getting a very good line is always possible when using locals .. Middling is a HUGE part of my game .. I may get a 2-3 point diff in my locals .. in NBA totals in can go up to 6-7 point diff ... but I must say I have full control of what i do and I do it as a hobby only ... I play the exact same amount on every bet I make except middling ... If I get a good middle I may go 10 times my normal bet ... You catch 1 of these a week and you are set .. I am willing to bet that 90% of the guys here do not middle ... You are missing a huge part of the game .. especially this year .. Lines have been tight ...
Good Luck philly and I think it would be a good thing for you to stop .. You most likely will be back but at least back off for a while buddy ... best to you

                        Re: Middling or hedging.

Anyone who does not middle or hedge when the opportunity arises is making a big mistake. It's a golden opportunity to minimize losses while maximize profits.

I've seen too many replies on this topic advising fellow members to 'let it ride'.

Especially with NBA totals. The Total often moves many points.

marty, I make out very well in middling in a year ... Your numbers are right on .. very close .. do the math ... if you bet 3k a middle and hit one in 10 and that is the average for me especially in NBA totals ... You win 6k and pay 2700 in j for that week ... You can hit one in every 2 weeks and you still are ok ... Now, if you can get lucky and hit 2-3 in a week .. You are on Park Avenue living next to Bry ....
