PHILADELPHIA vs NEW ENGLAND
Philadelphia and New England meet in Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Florida. The Eagles (15-3 SU/11-7 ATS) advanced to the "Big Game" game with a 27-10 home win over Atlanta on January 23rd as -6 point home chalks. Donovan McNabb passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles broke a three game losing streak in the NFC Championship Game. McNabb ended 17-of-26 while Brian Westbrook rushed for 96 yards on 16 carries for the Eagles. McNabb had thrown for just one touchdown and five interceptions in the three previous title games, but did not throw a pick this time around. The Eagles had a 326-217 edge in offense and a 19-12 edge in first downs and did not turn it over. The Patriots (16-2 SU/13-3-2 ATS) earned a trip to their third Super Bowl in the last four years with an impressive 41-27 win at Pittsburgh on January 23rd as -3 point road favorites. Tom Brady threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Deion Branch had 153 all-purpose yards and two scores to lead the Patriots. Brady, who improved to 8-0 in the postseason for his career, completed 14-of- 21 passes with no interceptions and New England converted four Pittsburgh turnovers into 24 points. Rodney Harrison returned an interception for a touchdown and Eugene Wilson had two picks for New England, which has won the Super Bowl in its last two appearances (2002 and 2004). The Pats were outgained in total offense, 388-322, but had no turnovers and controlled the game. Offensively, the Eagles rank 9th in the NFL with 351.1 ypg, while their defense ranks 10th in the league, allowing 319.7 ypg. Meanwhile, New England's offense comes in ranked 7th in the NFL, averaging 357.6 ypg. On defense, the Pats rank 9th in the NFL allowing 310.8 ypg. Both teams allow exactly 16.3 ppg, which is tied for second in the NFL behind only the Steelers. The Patriots have certainly been impressive over the past couple of seasons, going 31-2 SU and 25-7-1 ATS in their last 33 games. The Eagles have fared well after a bye week, going 12-4 ATS, while NE is just 7-10 ATS in that role. The Eagles were also 15-1 SU this season in games that had some significance and have the physical prowess to stay with the Pats. The Eagles committed an NFC league-low 16 turnovers on the season, so they will take care of the ball. Have the utmost respect for the Pats and their recent dominance, but in asking oneself if an Eagles outright win would be shocking, the answer is clearly no. Take the points.
