DR. BOB (STRONG OPINIONS)
Wednesday, January 19
Virginia (+10 ½) 77 MARYLAND 81
Virginia was an overrated team after beating Arizona early in the season, but the Cavaliers are a bit underrated now that star Devin Smith is back in the lineup after missing 3 games earlier this month. Maryland, meanwhile, has boosted their overall rating by beating up on bad teams and the Terps have struggled against decent or good teams, with the exception of Memphis and Temple. My ratings only favor Maryland by 9 points and Virginia applies to a decent 42-21-2 ATS double-revenge road underdog situation. I realize that the Cavs have been horrible away from home under coach Pete Gillen (29-53-3 ATS), but they are 14-12 ATS getting more than 8 points in road or neutral games and they’re coming off a spread win at Duke. I would take Virginia as a 2-Star Best Bet if the line goes back up to +11 points or more, but the Cavaliers are just a strong opinion as a dog of less than 11 points.
MIAMI-FLORIDA (+7 ½) 67 Duke 70
Miami-Florida is an underrated team and the Hurricanes have a history of playing their best against good teams and in conference play. Miami is now 41-16 ATS in the regular season as an underdog or pick in conference games and the ‘Canes are 26-4 ATS as an underdog of more than 3 points against a conference opponent with a win percentage of .600 or higher. I wasn’t really putting much weight on those trends entering the season given that Miami is in a new conference and has a new coach, but the Hurricanes are already 3-0 ATS as an underdog in the ACC with 2 straight up victories. Duke has beaten up on some less talented teams this season and my overall ratings favor the Blue Devils by 7 ½ points in this game. But, if I exclude games played against bad teams from each side then I get a fair line of Duke by just 3 points. I’ll lean with Miami to continue their good play against good teams."3 Stacks of High Society."
