You have exposed one of the biggest scams in the sports service racket---quoting records based on bogus lines. I believe services should do one of two things, either:
a) the spread at the time the pick is released, or;
b) the closing spread.

They should be consistent and use the same criteria all the time. This is why I also believe services should release a spread with their pick. My suspicion is that the service you refer to pulls this all the time.
