South Florida has had a very disappointing season, as evidenced by their 1-4 ATS mark, while UAB is 5-2 ATS this year despite being upset as an 18 point favorite at Tulane in their most recent game. This is the time of year when under-achieving teams tend to rebound a bit and the Bulls qualify in a pretty good 52-20-2 ATS big road underdog situation that plays on losing teams that have been bad against the number for the season. UAB’s loss as a double-digit favorite in their last game is not a good omen for the Blazers laying points in this game, as teams that lose as favorites of 10 points or more are just 112-136-6 ATS in their next game – which I mention in case you thought UAB might be a good bounce-back play. South Florida’s offense has been horrible again this season, averaging just 4.4 yards per play in their 5 games against Division 1-A opponents, who would combine to allow 5.7 yppl to an average offensive team. The Blazers are 0.5 yppl worse than average defensively (5.5 yppl allowed to teams that would average only 5.0 yppl against an average defensive team) and they just gave up 59 points on 7.0 yppl to a bad Tulane attack 11 days ago. UAB does have a good offense, averaging 6.6 yppl against teams that would allow 5.8 yppl to an average attack, but South Florida is decent defensively for a Conference USA team (6.0 yppl allowed to teams that would average 5.6 yppl against an average defense). My math model favors UAB by 19 points overall, so the line is fair, and the situation is in the favor of the big dog. South Florida has a profitable 55.0% chance of covering at the current line of +18 ½ points, so I’ll favor the Bulls to stay within the number.
