                          SHOCKER OF THE YEAR

                          2500♦ PRO FOOTBALL WINNER
Jacksonville - The Jag defense has been key thus far, allowing just 28 points to compensate for an offense that has scored only 35. The Jags, averaging a league-low 218 offensive yards per game, could possibly break out against a Colts defense that's allowing an NFL-high 416.7 yards per game.

Yet while everyone else is concerned with this issue, my question - if it ain't broke, why fix it?

We can't worry about when the offense will come around when the defense is getting it done. And until we see otherwise, we can't be concerned what will happen.

This is a big test, absolutley. But let me tell you something, we have a huge advantage in the trenches - and you should know me by now - if we have the edge there, I am on it! Keep in mind hte Colts aren't as fast on this surface, and are now away from their element. It will be tough for Indy to keep up with Jacksonville's defensive ends and speedy linebackers, and Peyton Manning will struggle today against the pass rush. Another problem Indy will encounter today (sur-****in-prise, surprise is Edgerrin James nursing an injury. Bothered by a hamstring, James could be ineffective, conveniently, and could become the scapegoat for this outright loss.)

Besides, I don't know how much time Manning will get today, as Jacksonville will use a hgue running game with Fred Taylor running behind a stellar offensive line that will be pushing back the league's lightest defensive front. Indy's D Line is giving up more than 100 on the ground, which is a lot considering this team is more used to getting into passing wars, and if Taylor has his way, Indy's offense will be seeing limited time to do any damage.

And another thing, Indy will make its third road trip in four weeks, and I don't care who you are, that plays a major factor in your psyche and your motivational tone. Jacksonville will be fired up for this clash a bit more than Indianapolis, mark my words guys. The Jags get this first meeting, and make a statement in opening this season at 4-0 atop the AFC South.

250♦ Denver/Tampa Bay Under - The Buccs are one of only six teams remaining without a victory. Their 36 points are third-fewest in the league, and 14 of those came Sunday night with the game virtually out of reach in a 30-20 loss to Oakland. And with the loss to Oakland came the loss of two more key offensive players. Tampa has some serious issues to deal with right now, and the only strength this team has is a defense that must come through today against Denver. And though the Broncos' offense has not been as ineffective as Tampa's, the usually formidable rushing attack has become a concern. It was the one linke that was supposed to help "save the day" for Denver, but appears to now be another problem cog in the engine that could. Both team will struggle, as it'll be the defensive units looking to exploit lethargic offensive units.

250♦ Atlanta/Carolina Over- The talk in Atlanta may be about Michael Vick - but it's the defense that has been getting it done, to lead the Falcons to a 3-0 start. So why the Over? Because this is not your normal Atlanta come in with Mr. Human Roller Coaster Ride and Whip Some Ass - this is a Division Rivalry that garners respect for the offensive onslaught we will see. Vick has almost single-handedly defeated Carolina in all three games he's played against them, passing for 656 yards and two touchdowns to go with 275 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the three contests. So rather than try to stop him, look for Carolina to give the ball to DeShaun Foster and get the hell out of the way. The Panthers come in off their bye week looking to stay on track after posting a 28-17 win over Kansas City on Sept. 19.

                          500♦ ST. LOUIS

Last season St. Louis did an about-face after its poor start by winning 11 of its last 13 to finish first in the NFC West. So this year, optimism remains with the team, which has a good chance to recover from a sub-par beginning. But San Francisco - is it too soon to look toward next season? St. Louis' issues and contributions to its 1-2 start are fixable - turnovers and penalities generally are, to say the least. And with a huge game like this for the Rams, Mike Martz knows that to pull even one-quarter of the way into the season would be strong, with a solid performance on National TV to give the team a boost.

The Rams still have a strong offense led by Marc Bulger, Isaac Bruce and Marshall Faulk. Bulger is third in the NFC with 915 passing yards, Bruce leads the NFL in catches (25) and yards (348), and Faulk is averaging 4.2 yards per carry and has caught 15 passes.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is in the bottom third of the league in total offense, and its current quarterback - which was its backup quarterback but is now its starting quarterback, hadn't taken a snap in his professional career before this season. Ken Dorsey took over for the injured Tim Rattay late in Week 1, and in three appearances, has thrown no touchdowns, three interceptions and has lost two fumbles. Rattay returned to practice this past Wednesday and is expected to start tonight, but ti won't matter, because even in the game against Atlanta he appeared in - he still looked like shit. And now he has to try to find cohesiveness with the unit he never jelled with in the first place.

                          100♦ SAN DIEGO

****in Tennessee has more issues than Martha Stewart! With a very good chance Steve McNair will be holding a clipboard today, and the Titans already struggling mightily on offense, this could not be a better opportunity for San Diego to build a bit of momentum. McNair spent two nights in a hospital this week after suffering a bruised sternum late in last week's 15-12 loss to Jacksonville. Thus, this game comes down to Chris Brown versus LaDanian Tomlinson, and I like the hometown kid to make right and the bolts to strike hard on Tennessee. Although San Diego is allowing teams to pass all over the place, it has been much more effective offensively, averaging over 20 points per game itself. Tomlinson rushed for just 60 yards on 22 attempts last week and has yet to break 100 yards in four games at Invesco Field. Today is the day he breaks out and Diego looks solid around against a team with huge issues.

                          1. 150,000♦ San Francisco
Marc Bulger and the Rams are just not the same team from a few years back. This team lost it after losing in that home playoff game a season ago in overtime to Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers. Marshall Faulk has not been getting the ball enough and this team just seems to be old right now.

I am not a fan of Bulger who I do not think can get it done. He seems to crap in his pants in big spots and throws way too many interceptions.

Meanwhile San Francisco has played 2 good games and last week was horrible in that 30 something to nothing loss in Seattle. Which team will show up today? Well with the game on national tv and their quarterback Tim Rattay back I have full confidence that the 49ers will return to the form that almost pulled the outright in the Superdone a few weeks back.

The Niners are not a good team but they will get their 2 or 3 wins at home this season. This is the perfect spot for that first win.

I just have no confidence at all in St. Louis and to be getting basically better than a fg at home with a pretty good San Fran defense is more than enough for me!

                          2. 100,000♦ Miami
The Miami Dolphins have been terrible this season but this is just a bad line in what is a fierce rivalry situation. Anything can happen when the Jets and Dolphins tangle, anything. With Miami's real number 1 quarterback Jay Fiedler back in the mix the Dolphins legitimately could win this game. There is no way that the road team in this series should be such a heavy favorite even if Chad Pennington and the New Yorkers have been the much better team thus far.

Miami's defense is still very solid and can force that big turnover at anytime. Sure their offense has struggled without a real running game but Fiedler has been in this rivalry for awhile and will know how to deal with things and overall hold his own.

This number has been flying up as it opened at around 4 1/2 and at this time is at 6. That is just way too high of a price in this rivalry. Anything can happen and anything might happen today. Miami will win some games this season, with their defense they are not a terrible team and this game really is pretty winnable.

                          1. 200,000♦ Packers
Bottom line in this game, Brett Favre and the Packers are going to have to play with complete desperation as they have lost two straight games and just cannot afford another home loss here to the Giants. This is an angry club that has no choice but to win here and they will take it out on the Giants.

New York meanwhile is feeling good about themselves after winning 2 in a row but those were in the Meadowlands over the Redskins and Browns. Neither of those wins really impresses me that much. Shoot, you should beat those teams at home.

To get the Future Hall Of Famer Favre and a stud running back in Ahman Green at Lambeau in this semi must win situation and only have to lay a touchdown is fine with me. The Pack are clearly a much better team. Kurt Warner is due for one of those 4 fumble games and the Giants are very due to lay an egg.

                          34-13 Pack!

                          2. 200,000♦ Eagles
A mismatch of epic proportions. This Philadelphia team has been firing on all cylinders and it's not going to change right now. They are as talented as they come with Terrell Owens running patterns and Donovan McNabb has been sensational in every game. It's funny how with this new dominant offense nobody is talking about the defense but the Eagles defense is as solid as ever and maybe a tad worse against the run but nothing to worry about at all.

Chicago is not a very good team. They just lost Rex Grossman and Brian Urlacher is expected to miss which means journeyman Jonathan Quinn is going to get the start, yuck!

No reason this game won't be a blowout!

                          3. 200,000♦ Colts
I have been a huge fan of what Jack DelRio has done this season and predicted how they could be the surprise team in the league this year before the season began but the Colts' offense is just too good, even for Jacksonville's great defense.

This is going to be a classic matchup of offense vs. defense. Normally getting points at home with the great defense would be the play but this Indianapolis offense is so high-powered right now that they would score against anybody right now and that includes the Super Bowl Ravens of a few years back and that 1985 Bears' team with the Fridge and company. Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and the rest of this team is just too explosive. They can score at anytime from anywhere on the field.

The Jags defense is stout and will stop Manning more often that the Packers did, that's for sure but when all is said and done Indy like always will have put 24-28 on the board and that will be more than enough to cover this game.

This is just not a good matchup for DelRio's club and it will show in their first loss of the season.

Perez is 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA and a complete game shutout among his wins against the Reds lifetime. He is also 5-3 away from home this year and will dominate a Reds team that is starting Claussen who has an ERA over five his last three starts. All Pirates today.

The Sox' Lowe is 8-7 with a career ERA of 3.87 against the O's, and opponent Bauer is 0-3 career against the Sox with an ERA of 4.58. He gave up three earned in four and a third last time out against Boston and will get rocked today to close out the regular season.

KC's Greinke won his last start against the White Sox in impressive fashion, going seven strong allowing one earned run on three hits, that only run coming on a solo dinger. He is 6-5 this year at home with an ERA of 3.18 and will cruise today .

The Browns and 'Skins are in the same boat, sitting at 1-2 with the fear of their third loss in four games, and the road team is laying points here? Portis or no Portis, this is a Cleveland team that held Baltimore to three points in their only home game so far this season. Cleveland is 15-8 SU and 16-6 ATS their last 23 at home when the total is 35 1/2 to 39 points. Washington is get this, 30-54 their last 84 as a favorite of any kind, and are 0-2 SU and ATS their last two as a road favorite of three or less and also 5-8 SU and 3-9 ATS their last 12 against that stat. Garcia at the QB and Suggs/Green at the RB position will do enough today against this banged up 'Skins D to get the win by a late field goal by Dawson pulling out the close victory at home.

San Francisco +4 over St. Louis

This is a major trap line. People think high powered Rams offense and no defense to speak of for San Fran and immediately they jump on St. Louis. The Rams, however, are only 3-4 SU and 1-6 ATS their last seven games following two or more consecutive losses, and are also 2-4 ATS their last six on the road as a favorite of three and a half to seven points. San Fran is 2-0 SU and ATS the past three years as a home dog of three or less, and gets QB Rattay back who looked OK in preseason (better than Dorsey - yuk). Love San Fran as a home dog tonight!
