    Subject: NFL Sunday with 5*
Message: As I post this, the NCAA plays have not been finalized. I will update the record on Monday or Sunday morning.
My first NFL 5* play this week. I usually average 7-10 per season.
    _________________________________________________

    5* Cincy/Miami UNDER 39
    4* Dallas -6
    4* Indianapolis -1
    4* Baltimore/Pittsburgh UNDER 35.5
    3* Jacksonville/Denver UNDER 39
    3* Tampa Bay +3

Miami has more problems than I can list here. Forget Ricky, they have also lost Travis Minor and his 2.9 YPC. On the road... in the Bengals first appearance on national television in about 600 years... it's going to be a circus in the home opener. Like every season, the Dolphins D is the support for the offense. They should hold the Bengals offense under 24 points on sheer will. The problem will come with the loss of Bowens from the D-Line and the secondary in disarray with injuries. It is possible that two rookies may start in the secondary. Even so, Rudy Johnson will be the focus of the Bengal offense to minimize the potential mistakes at the QB position. Turnovers are always a concern with a total under 40, but I like this game to finish 27-13 at worst.

As I discussed here this week, the biggest transition in the NFL is from Week 1 to Week 2. Lines are a work in progress and there are some good opportunities in sides and totals.
The Ravens are a DOMINANT home team. The way they win at home is by clamping down on opposing offenses. I am no fan of Deion but he will help in the nickel and dime base defenses. The biggest problem for Baltimore is offensively, where they have lost every option at WR and most teams will force Kyle Boller to read the stunts at the line and throw his 8 yard outs. The Steelers have never had much success in Baltimore and the focus on Duce Staley running will force Maddox in to some 3rd and longs all day. This game will be lucky to hit 30.

Cleveland shot their wad against Baltimore. I know that Dallas will struggle this year, even with Bill at the helm. Realistically, Cleveland is emotionally spent off the home opener and are not as talented as may be perceived... and they do not have the offense to take advantage of the Dalls soft spots. Look for the Browns to have some real difficulty moving the ball offensively and Parcells to win and cover the home opener, knowing that wins will come at a premium this year.

Indy has too many weapons offensively for the Titans to keep up and can not afford to start 0-2. The loss of Chris Brown at RB is hurtful to the Titan gameplan, but asking McNair to throw 30+ times a game is not what they are going to be successful at. Indy is not great shakes on D, but I think they win this by 17.

Seeing the Seahawks favored on the road will always be a "play against" until they show a track record of success. Yes, they won last week in New Orleans but if you saw the game, the Saints lost the game as much as the Seahawks won it. Now they travel as far as an NFL team can go, coast to coast... Seattle to Tampa Bay. I am not impressed with the TB offense and they have a lack of options at RB and WR, no question. I just know that Gruden will have a game plan to shut down the Seattle offense and hope that a score or two will hold up. Remember, Gruden and Holmgren worked on the same side in Green Bay. There won't be any surprises here. Tampa does not have to worry about Shaun Alexander today... that's 45% of the offense right there. Tampa Bay in a straight up win and it could be well under the total.

Denver comes off a huge home opener in prime time against the Chiefs. Yes, any back in the Bronco offense can probably gain 1,000 yards. Let's see how they do on the road against a team that may be the most improved in the AFC. I know that Leftwich is a unknown commodity at QB but I think that Del Rio may have the most improved D in the NFL this year, including the Redskins. In the home opener, this will be a struggle for the Broncos to get the same opportunities for Griifin that they did on Sunday night. Total points? Let's say 34...

      Redskins (-3) over GIANTS

Why mess with a proven winner? Last week, Washington was at the top of our list as a best bet, and Joe Gibbs will stay in this spot until further notice. Why not? Gibbs is just a flat-out winner. Now, the Redskins have this frenzied, kung fu-style defense that Gibbs turned over to former Bills head coach Gregg Williams. He has the "D" attacking all game long and does not let opposing quarterbacks settle into a flow. Last week, they harassed Brad Johnson, a slow-footed QB, and will do the same thing to the tortoiselike, aging Kurt Warner. Forget about Eli Manning. If he gets a whiff of action, he'll need smelling salts. Mark Brunell played for Tom Coughlin at Jacksonville, and they didn't exactly see eye-to-eye, and Brunell has circled this one, so expect an explosion.

      Colts (+1) over TITANS

Would have liked to grab another point, but we'll take one and a hook. Indianapolis came up a field goal short against the defending Super Bowl champs at New England last Thursday (27-24), but Peyton Manning and the offense were already in midseason form. They rolled up 446 yards against a normally stingy Patriot defense, with Manning passing for 256 yards and two TDs while Edgerrin James gobbled up 142 yards on the ground. That should have been good enough for the win, but two turnovers at the New England 1-yard line put a crimp in Indy's engine. Last season, the Colts handled the Titans with ease at home (33-7) and won at Tennessee (29-27). And since the Titans looked just ordinary against the toothless Dolphins, the Horseshoes are the way to roll.

      Steelers (+4) over RAVENS

Baltimore's vaunted rushing attack - or, more specifically, Jamal Lewis - was invisible (57 yards) against the Browns last week. Don't blame it all on Lewis. Jonathan Ogden, the all-world tackle, missed the game with a sprained knee, and he is the mountain that makes the rushing game rumble. Pitt has covered five of the last six against the Ravens, and will be money once again.

      RAIDERS (-3) over Bills

Oakland was pretty shaky in the opener at Pittsburgh, falling behind by 14-0, but the Silver and Black fought back to make the game competitive and cover the spread. They outscored the Steelers 21-10 the rest of the way, led by Rich Gannon's 305 passing yards. If Gannon stays healthy, he has the ability to play at an All-Pro level, and guide Oakland to nine or 10 wins.

      BENGALS (-4) over Dolphins

Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin', which is this year's theme song for Miami. And that's just the running game. After the devastating retirement of Ricky Williams, Travis Minor was penciled in as the starter. Minor went down with a sprained ankle, and his backup, Sammy Morris, sprained his ankle as well. Nothin' from nothin' leaves us with a big fat Bengal blowout.

      Vikings (+3) over EAGLES

Great game to watch, tough game to handicap. This looks like one of those "last team with the ball wins" affairs. And only by a field goal, so we'll make a light play to the Purple underdog.

      SAINTS (-7) over 49ers

New Orleans had back-to-back home games only once last season, against the Bucs and Giants. The Saints lost the first one to Tampa (14-7), but came back the next week to smash New York (45-7).

      We also like:

      JAGUARS (+3) over Broncos

      Texans (+3) over LIONS

      PACKERS (-9) over Bears

      Rams (+2) over FALCONS

      Panthers (+6) over CHIEFS

      Seahawks (-3) over BUCCANEERS

      Browns (+4) over COWBOYS

                Football

I see requests in this thread everyday for Northcoast and Gold Sheet (among others). There is really no need to request these guys, as those services are in the report that Thick posts every single day!

So far, from what I have seen, VSS Wins football is kicking some serious a$$! Hope someone can post their NFL for tomorrow. Their 6* selections are the most reliable I have seen out there. Also looking for Alatex NFL and/or The Swami Don Wagner. Have a great Sunday guys!

I also would like to see the GoldSheet Late Telephone Services as soon as anyone has it available. I understand it is contained in larger reports but the sooner the better when shopping for the best lines.

                            Buffalo vs. Oakland -3

There’s an old handicapping adage that goes something like this: ‘No team is as good as they looked in their best game or as bad as they looked in their worst.’ Another one goes ‘Don’t judge a team by the results of a single game’. So, I’m not willing to write off the Buffalo Bills season after their collapse on the final drive against the Jags last week. At the same time, this team looked exactly like they did last year – inept offensively, prone to mistakes at inopportune times, unable to win close ballgames. While Drew Bledsoe didn’t throw an interception in the opener, he was harried, hurried and under pressure from start to finish. Buffalo lost a pair of fumbles in the red zone; they missed a crucial field goal; they never got their running attack going; and they lost the game after allowing three 4th down conversions on the game’s final drive. Now, off that kind of defeat, they’ve got to travel 3000 miles west to play a Raiders team hungry for their first victory since December. Let’s not forget the fact that Oakland’s 4-12 record in ’03 was a result of their road woes as much as anything – the team played .500 football at home, winning all four of their games for the season there, including victories over solid clubs like the Bengals, Vikings and Ravens. The Bills are catching points as the better of the two squads defensively – not usually a spot in which I’m interested in the favorite. But we saw Oakland demonstrate some real big play ability last week with speedy wideouts Doug Gabriel and Alvis Whitted each catching a long TD pass – offensive explosiveness that we just haven’t seen out of the Bills. In this game, I prefer the team that can score points over the team that can’t. Don’t wait to bet this one – much better to lay three points than 3.5, and that’s the direction that this line is headed.

                            Recommendation: Oakland
