I am nearly positive this is correct for NFL, I can't find a recent updated post)
With the combination of very questionable weather in NE and a team that was less than impressive in preseason offensively in the Colts, I am passing on tonight's opener. Additionally, I am going to wait and see how the refs call the new 5 yard rule in the regular season as they really clamped down on corners and safeties in preseason play, but sometimes they swallow the whistles when the real games begin. If they stay consistent as they did in preseason, expect some extended drives offensively and more scoring in the beginning until defenses and coordinators adjust. NE is the team this rule was applied for after the AFC Championship game. The RCA Dome-based Colts may have some issues with the swirling winds at Gillette tonight as the storm will be peaking at kickoff with 60% chance of rain and winds to 20mph. Rain can alter scoring either way, either slippery balls and turnovers or defensive backs falling down in coverage for easy scores. Wind, however will knock down field goals and deep balls in the passing game. Directional line drive punting and field position come into play. I think that NE has the advantages in the elements and a serious home streak, not only ATS but the defense has been unreal on their home field. Historically, Super Bowl winners from the previous season do well ATS in the opener, even being overvalued frequently. Opening at home with a championship banner raising celebration will give NE an extra adrenaline rush tonight as well. The sliding occurs in games 2-5 as the public perception of the value gets further overpriced and the competition gives extra effort to knock off the champs.
In Alabama tonight, one of the Big 12 "elite" teams this season travel to play a solid team in Troy State. Mizzou has a Heisman candidate in Brad Smith at QB and have been listed as a double digit road favorite against a very solid defensive team coming off a road win at Marshall. Not certain if the number is off by much but my feeling is that Troy State will have a distinct advantage playing on the home field in front of a passionate crowd. Troy generally plays more road games than home games as a small revenue program due to the reliance on funds from larger venue stadiums and opponents. I expect a super effort tonight and an outright win would not shock me. So... two plays tonight, one *rated play and an unofficial teaser for grins and chuckles:
2* Troy State +12
Tease Troy State +18 to NE +3 as a small wager.
Good Luck tonight in whatever you play, back tomorrow with updates and weekend action.
