      COLLEGE FOOTBALL TRENDS

      BUFFALO at EASTERN MICHIGAN

Buffalo is only 5-12-1 ATS in its last 18 lined games. The Bulls have also failed to win or cover in eight straight versus MAC West teams.

Eastern Michigan went 4-1 ATS at home in 2003. The Eagles, however, have covered just one of their last five lined home openers.

      TEXAS A&M at UTAH

Texas A&M went a terrible 2-10 ATS last year and is 0-7 SU/ATS in its last seven as a non-conference road pup. The Aggies have covered just twice in their last 13 road openers.

Utah went 10-2 ATS overall and 5-1 versus the number at home a year ago. The Utes also covered six of eight as a chalk in 2003.

      BOSTON COLLEGE at BALL STATE

On the road, Boston College has covered five straight and eight of nine. The Eagles, though, have failed to cover in seven of their last nine season openers.

Ball State has scored the ATS win in five of its last six versus Big East schools, but failed to cover the 22-point number in a 53-29 loss at Boston College last year. The Cardinals are just 3-10 ATS in their last 13 as a home dog.

      NORTHWESTERN at TCU

Northwestern went 5-1-1 against the number on the road last season. The Wildcats have covered 14 of their last 19 non-conference road tilts.

In its last 13 appearances when laying points, TCU is just 3-9-1 ATS. However, the Horned Frogs have covered 16 of their last 24 as a home chalk.

      --------------------------------------------------------

      --------------------------------------------------------

      UTEP at ARIZONA STATE

UTEP has covered just once in its last 11 non-conference games. The Miners have failed to cash the Vegas ticket in their initial lined game seven straight years.

UTEP has covered five of its last six when installed as an underdog of 21-or-more points.

Arizona State went 2-9 versus the number in 2003, including 1-4 ATS when laying points. The Sun Devils have covered three of four as a double-digit home chalk since 2001.

      PRO FOOTBALL PRESEASON PRIMER

      BALTIMORE at NEW YORK

Quarterback Kyle Boller and the rest of the Baltimore starters are not expected to play past the opening quarter. Boller will be followed by Kordell Stewart and rookie Josh Harris, who could be put on the team’s practice squad.

Three defensive starters, ends Tony Weaver and Marques Douglas along with linebacker Peter Boulware, missed last week's game with injuries and are questionable tonight.

Starting cornerback Chris McAlister is back from injury. Newly signed defensive back Deion Sanders will not play.

New York quarterback Kurt Warner, who has beaten out rookie Eli Manning for the starting job, will start this evening and play into the second quarter. Manning will step under center next and play into the fourth quarter.

Coach Tom Coughlin indicated his starters would play into the second quarter. The offensive line starters could go longer. The team allowed five sacks last week against the New York Flyboys. Newcomers Solomon Page and Brandon Winey will see action this evening along the offensive line while guard Barry Stokes will not play.

Two starters, cornerback Will Allen and tight end Jeremy Shockey, are out with injuries.

The team has released kicker Bill Gramatica as Todd France, who has never kicked in a regular season game, appears to have won the job.

      CAROLINA at PITTSBURGH

Carolina’s Jake Delhomme will start under center and be followed by Chris Weinke. Rod Rutherford, the team’s fourth-string quarterback, is also expected to play tonight.

Carolina is the only undefeated team remaining as it has now won eight straight preseason games straight-up.

Veteran Artell Harris and rookie Chris Gamble are battling for a starting cornerback spot opposite the other corner starter, Ricky Manning, Jr.

Defensive end Kavika Pittman will miss the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

Tommy Maddox and the rest of the Pittsburgh offensive starters will play just a quarter tonight. Coach Bill Cower indicated that the defensive starters could go a little longer.

Maddox, who has thrown just 18 preseason passes, will be followed by rookie first-rounder Ben Roethlisberger and then Brian St. Pierre.

Starting cornerback Deshea Townsend is out for tonight’s game with a groin injury and will be replaced by Ike Taylor.

Three starters are questionable: Offensive lineman Alan Faneca, linebacker Kendrell Bell, and defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy.

Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El is considered probable despite a calf injury.

      BUFFALO at DETROIT

Starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe will play only a series or two this evening.

Journeyman Shane Matthews, who was signed this week, will see a little action. He’ll be followed by Greg Zolman. Buffalo has lost two backup quarterbacks, rookie J.P. Losman and Travis Brown, to injuries during the preseason.

Injured starting safety Lawyer Milloy is also out, while starting running back Travis Henry will be held out, as well.

First-year coach Mike Mularkey wants his banged up offensive line starters to display some cohesiveness tonight. There are depth concerns at the tackle spot where Mike Williams has been slowed by injury and Marcus Price is still out with a toe injury.

Detroit coach Steve Mariucci indicated his starters would not play long to avoid any unnecessary injuries. Mike McMahon will start at quarterback in place of No. 1 passer Joey Harrington, who isn’t expected to play much, if at all.

Rick Mirer will finish the game under center.

Several players are out with injuries tonight including starting linebackers Alex Lewis and James Davis. Also out are defensive linemen Kalimba Edwards and Cory Redding, backup fullback Paul Smith, and offensive lineman Matt Joyce.

Starting linebacker Boss Bailey is likely out until October following knee surgery.

      KANSAS CITY at DALLAS

Kansas City coach Dick Vermeil said his starters on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Trent Green, will play about 25 plays against Dallas. Green has been slowed by a sore toe but should play according to the coach.

Green will be followed under center by Todd Collins and Damon Huard. Backup quarterback Casey Clausen has been waived.

Kansas City has been hurting at the wide receiver spot during the preseason. ****** Morton continues to be out with an Achilles’ injury while Marc Boerigter will have knee surgery and might be lost for the year.

Rookie Ryan Lilja could get his first start tonight at left guard.

Vermeil said Lawrence Tynes would kick exclusively Thursday as Morten Andersen will not play.

This is a very short week for Dallas, which scored a 20-17 win over Tennessee on Monday night. Quarterback Vinny Testaverde, who completed 17-of-24 passes for 240 yards including one TD and one INT versus Tennessee, is not expected to see much action this evening.

Coach Bill Parcells, who was unsure Wednesday as to how long he would play his starters, is still undecided as who the team’s backup quarterback will be. He did say that Tony Romo, who is 12-of-25 for 109 yards and two interceptions this preseason, was a little bit ahead of Drew Henson in terms of game management.

Henson is 21-of-29 for 216 yards and a pick. Both will play tonight.

Rookie running back Julius Jones, who leads the team with 142 yards rushing, is listed as questionable.

      TAMPA BAY at HOUSTON

The Tampa Bay starters are not expected to see much action tonight according to coach Jon Gruden. He said quarterback Brad Johnson may only play one series this evening and will be followed by Brian Griese and Chris Simms at the helm.

Wide receiver Charles Lee is expected to make his initial preseason appearance tonight after being slowed in August by a pulled hamstring.

The Tampa Bay first-team offense has yet to score a touchdown this preseason.

The team traded guard Jason Whittle to New York this week. Meanwhile, guard Matt O’Dwyer was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list (PUP), and defensive end Lamar King was transferred to season-ending injured reserve.

David Carr will start under center for Houston and will be followed by Tony Banks and Dave Ragone. The Houston starters are expected to play just a series or two tonight.

Defensive lineman Seth Payne will see his first game action since suffering a knee injury in the second regular season game a year ago. He’ll go between 20 and 25 snaps. Starting defensive end Gary Walker will miss his second straight game.

Rookie cornerback Dunta Robinson is listed as doubtful due to a hip injury.

      ARIZONA at DENVER

Arizona coach Dennis Green has not been happy with his team’s performance in the preseason. That means quarterback Josh McCown and the rest of the starters will go longer than usual for a fourth exhibition game. However, Green did not elaborate how long that would be.

Wide receivers Bryant Johnson and Anquan Boldin remain out with injuries, while rookie receiver Larry Fitzgerald is doubtful due to a sprained ankle.

Running backs Marcel Shipp and James Hodgins are out with injuries. The team acquired veteran tailback Troy Hambrick this week in a trade with Oakland.

Defensive end Kenny King is out with a wrist injury.

Denver doesn’t want to risk unnecessary injuries to its starters tonight, so they won’t go long.

Younger starters and players coming off injuries likely will play more in what will be Denver’s fifth exhibition game.

Running back Mike Anderson is out for the season with groin injury. Anderson was poised to be the top backup behind starter Quentin Griffin.

      MINNESOTA at SEATTLE

After the Minnesota starters played into the third quarter in last week’s game, they will take very few snaps this evening according to coach Mike Tice.

Daunte Culpepper will be followed under center by Gus Frerotte and Shaun Hill.

Cornerback Brian Williams and running back Michael Bennett will miss tonight’s game with injuries. With Williams out, youngsters such as Rushen Jones, Reggie Austin and Horace Willis will be trying to impress the coaches.

With backup running back Onterrio Smith likely missing the first four games of the year due to a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, veteran Moe Williams will be called upon to step in for the injured Bennent in the backfield.

Matt Hasselbeck, Trent Dilfer and Seneca Wallace are expected to take snaps this evening for Seattle. How long each will go has not been determined.

Offensive tackle Walter Jones is still a contract holdout while fellow lineman Jerry Wunsch is out with an ankle injury.

Starting linebacker Chad Brown is out with a broken leg while linebacker D.D. Lewis has a bum shoulder.

The starting defense has allowed just two field goals in the preseason, and opponents have gained just 95 yards on 31 carries.

      ST. LOUIS at OAKLAND

The offensive line for St. Louis remains a concern with tackle Orlando Pace still a contract holdout. Tackle Kyle Turley is out for the year with an injury.

Marc Bulger, Chris Chandler and Jeff Smoker could all see action under center tonight. The exact amount of playing time is still unknown although coach Mike Martz has said he will pull his regulars early.

Quarterbacks Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins and Marques Tuiasosopo will all play tonight for Oakland.

Cornerback Charles Woodson has ended his holdout, but won’t play this evening. Starting linebackers DeLawrence Grant, Napoleon Harris and Sam Williams are all out with knee injuries.

Oakland coach Norv Turner wants his defense to perform better on third downs.

      SAN DIEGO at SAN FRANCISCO

San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer will start Drew Brees tonight at quarterback with rookie Philip Rivers to follow.

Linebacker Donnie Edwards will see his first preseason action this evening and could play into the second quarter.

San Diego has been beat up at the receiver spot. But Tim Dwight, who hasn’t played in a game as of yet, could see extended action versus San Francisco.

Tim Rattay will start under center for San Francisco and play two or three series. Ken Dorsey has returned from his back injury and will play into the third quarter. Cody Pickett will finish things up.

Backup passer Brandon Doman has been released.

      JACKSONVILLE at NEW ENGLAND

Jacksonville running backs Fred Taylor and Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, as well as tight ends George Wrighster and Kyle Brady, will miss tonight’s game with injuries.

Coach Jack Del Rio was undecided Wednesday as to how much playing time quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and David Garrard would receive.

Backup passer Doug Johnson was released this week.

New England coach Bill Belichick indicated starting quarterback Tom Brady will play the first series or two and then give way to his three backups. Rohan Davey, Kliff Kingsbury and Jim Miller will each play tonight as they are competing for two backup positions.

Starting Cornerback Ty Law will not go this evening.

          Rich Podolski

He writes a column, "Podolski's Picks" for ESPN Insider during the CFB season. Last year he hit 55% of his 171 picks. But he had, I think 57 best bets, of which he hit 62%. He has a best bet tonight on

          TCU -6.5.

His other best bet this week is
          Texas Tech -24.

He has several other picks also if anyone is interested, but I thought I'd post his best bets.

Ccomp selection CFL - ottawa +10

i know these teams are going in different directions but look at the importance of the game for ottawa -- they have to start to win to get in the playoff picture with hamilton playing better -- as well look at montreal on the road no where near as good as they are at home -- joseph is back for his third straight start and played better in edmonton -- i dont know if all this adds up to ottawa beating montreal but i will sure take the 10 points in what i think will be an easy home cover -- 2 units ottawa +10

Play On: Boston College Minus Points
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is very uncharcteristic for me to lay these kind of points on the road especially early in the season but this is an exception. BC returns 2 experienced and productive quarterbacks. Paul Peterson will get the start and will be backed up by Quinton Porter who threw for 1764 yards and 14 TD's. The Eagles lost their leading rusher to graduation but are still extremely talented and deep at that position. Their offensive line is solid and they are in good shape at wide receiver as well. All this does not bode well for a Ball St. team that returns only 4 starters on defense. The Cardinals defense allowed 32.0 PPG and did not hold any team under 100 yards rushing in 2003. The Cardinals had the best recruiting class in the MAC this season but are still a year or two away. They do have some promise on offense. The problem is their defense will not be able to stop the Eagles offense and they will likely spend the night playing catch up and have limited opportunities. Play on Boston College minus the points as my free selection for Thursday night.

Any non conference home dog of +4.5 or greater playing their first game of the season, that has exactly 1 game revenge versus a foe playing in their first game is 2-15 ATS since 1988. The average margin of defeat in those games is 25.4 PPG.
