Last Night:1-0 with Pittsburgh OVER 38
In week three, most teams use these games as a final tune up for the starters before the regular season. Many teams have broken camp and the players are able to spend time at home and getting ready for opening week. The coaches know most of their starters and are looking at the last few roster spots to fill in backup positions and special teams players. The rotations for starting offense and defense are usually longer and game plans get a bit more intricate adding blitz packages and zones defensively and opening up the playbook a bit more on offense. Coaches mainly want to fine tune and keep the starters healthy heading into Week One of the regular season. With a bit more playing time for the regulars on both sides of the ball, Week Three of preseason is the closest we will get to handicapping as we will in regular season. That being said, we have three plays for Friday night NFL action:
4* New York Jets/Giants OVER 39
3* Washington/St. Louis UNDER 41
3* Minnesota/SF OVER 41
In New York, two teams that would seem to have many problems defensively. The Giants are decimated at LB and in the secondary and have gotten torched this preseason. Coughlin is a defensive guru but he has nothing to work with. The Jets defense is very soft and is not likely to improve with several key players out with injury. With Manning and Warner still locked in a battle for #1 and Pennington playing well into the 3rd quarter, both teams will move the ball and points should be plentiful. Jesse Palmer and Quincy Carter will not see action tonight but this one should pass 39 sometime in the late 3rd quarter. I am expecting turnovers to play a role in scoring output tonight as well. Neither team has had much success with ball control and these have been reasonably high scoring affiars in the past with an in-city rivalry for bragging rights. As this likely will be the final tuneup for both teams starters, I am looking at a total score closer to 48 or more.
St. Louis has so many issues with injury, Mike Martz just wants to get to the opener as healthy as possible, and now has to play his second game in five days off an embarrasment in KC on Monday. With a patchwork offensive line and Bulger hurting with a bum knee, the Rams will try to make short work of this one and move into the last week of preseason getting the veterans healthy. The pasing game will suffer tonight as Bulger and an immobile Chris Chandler don't stand a chance of sitting in the pocket. Washington has been very aggressive defensively so far and held Miami to 98 yards of offense last week. Granted, Miami is no juggernaut but an impressive display nonetheless, especially played in South Florida. While Washington will play Ramsey and Brunell into the second half, they are not a "quick strike" type offense even with the long scoring plays that killed my UNDER play against Carolina in Week Two. Defense is Washington's strength and Gibbs has always used that to control the game and the clock. Even with Arrington out tonight, the Redskins will keep a lid on this one and I am looking at 29 to 31 points MAX for this contest. St. Louis has had no luck in the red zone so far and even with KC rebuilding their D, couldn't move the ball to save their lives on Monday night.
The Vikings ended last season on a nightmare note, getting bounced from the playoffs on a "miracle" heave from McCown in Arizona on the last play of the game. Mike Tice said that going into preseason, he had to "get the winning attitude back" from that disaster finish. The focus has been on winning these early games to set a tone going into the 2004 season. The starters will see extended playing time tonight, well into the third quarter against a 49er team that will trouble winning six games this year and lost the Defensive Coordinator to the HC position in Atlanta. With Minnesota gameplanning for the regulars tonight, the vikes should put up 30 on a horrible, rebuilding San Fran defense and the QB situation in 49er land in tatters, turnovers will play a big part of this game. The Niners plan on playing the first-teamers into the 3rd Quarter as well, and even with Dorsey out and Rattay not 100%, I do expect that SF will be able to score a few of their own against a Vikings defense that has scared no one in the past. Many first year players will see time in the Minnesota secondary tonight due to lack of depth and injury. You may see 55 or more put up in this one.
Good Luck in whatever you decide to play this evening, back tomorrow with more winners!
