In a week where every NFL team is getting a look at it's starters, the 9ers will only get to see more of Ken Dorsey, who remains the 49ers' starter at QB as Tim Rattay continues to battle the injury bug and Jeff Garcia has departed for greener pastures. Dorsey was the starter a week ago in a San Francisco loss to Oakland. Meanwhile, The Bears return home from an OT victory against the St. Louis Rams and will take the field as winners in front of a rabbid crowd in their first ever preseason game at new Soldier Field. New Head coach Lovie Smith will be making his home stadium debut for Chicago as well, giving things a real optimistic feel in the Windy City. New team. New Coach. New Stadium. Winning record. An exciting new era of Bears football? That remains to be seen, but certainly the stakes are raised for Chicago, and thus, so is the motivation - exactly the type of environment required for pre-season success. Pre-season success, by the way, nothing new to Chicago. The Bears have now won 5 of their last 6 preseason-opening games and hold an all-time preseason record of 210-146.

There’s no way I’m willing to lay more than a FG with a very public Colts team in a national TV game – this line is inflated based on Indy’s regular season reputation. The Colts did not look sharp at all last week, as the first string offense couldn’t move the football against the Chargers depleted D, while their first string defense was manhandled by San Diego’s dismal offensive line. Against any decent team, the Colts would have lost that game by double digits, but Cory Sauter and Joe Hamilton rallied them, scoring a TD with 11 seconds remaining for the win and cover. This Colts team has nothing to prove in August. They played that way last week, with some readily apparent defensive weaknesses, particularly aginst the run. And this week, instead of Joe Hamilton closing out the game, it will be Jim Sorgi getting a second half look, facing his first NFL defenses. Sorgi is no Joe Hamilton, that’s for certain, leaving the Colts in danger of blowing any lead that they might have heading into the 4th quarter.

We backed the Jets last week in New Orleans, thinking that Brooks Bollinger was a notch improved from last year and that Canadian Football MVP Ricky Ray was a very capable 3rd stringer. Both parts of that handicap were wrong. Bollinger was a disaster, single-handedly costing us about 14 points with a pair of fumbles, and a pair of bad sacks in scoring position on his first four drives. And Ray wasn’t sharp behind the Jets porous 3rd string OL, completing only 6 of 16 passes, not leading the team to a single point. Thankfully, Bollinger was injured in practice this week, which leaves the Jets QB rotation thin – Ricky Ray will get at least two full quarters of action against the Colts reserve defenders. He’s reportedly looked very good in practice this week, and I’m high enough on this guy to give him another chance on Saturday night in prime time.

Kiteboy. They may be free, but their games are posted like 120 seconds before the listed start time, so it SHOULD be free shouldn't it? There is no way that I can use info that comes in 2 minutes before a game goes off.
