    Football Newsletter

    Saturday, August 14

    Cincinnati at Tampa Bay

Saturday’s game has been postponed indefinitely due to Hurricane Charley.

    Jacksonville at Miami

Jacksonville will start Byron Leftwich at quarterback. He will be followed by David Garrard, Doug Johnson and possibly Quinn Gray. Coach Jack Del Rio has not released the amount of playing time each will receive.

Jacksonville is hurting at the defensive end spot as Tony Brackens and Paul Spicer are out with injuries. Bobby McCray, the team’s seventh-round draft pick out of Florida, will start at defensive end.

Miami coach Dave Wannstedt has indicated that Jay Fiedler will start at quarterback and will be followed by A.J. Feeley. Wannstedt was not sure whether Fielder would work with the first team or not.

Miami is thin in the defensive backfield as cornerbacks Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain won’t play tonight due to injury.

    Pittsburgh at Detroit

Pittsburgh is expected to play Tommy Maddox at quarterback in the first quarter. He’ll be followed by rookie Ben Roethlisberger, who will play into the second half. Brian St. Pierre, last year’s fifth-round pick, will finish things up under center. Veteran Charlie Batch is out with a knee injury.

The offensive starters will play the first quarter according to coach Bill Cower.

Three of the team’s four starting players in the secondary will be out with injuries. They include cornerbacks Chad Scott and Deshea Townsend and safety Chris Hope.

Detroit coach Steve Mariucci hasn’t indicated how long starting quarterback Joey Harrington will play. He has said that he wants to get backup Mike McMahon significant playing time.

Starting linebacker Boss Bailey is out as is starting cornerback Fernando Bryant. Cornerback Dre’ Bly and rookie running back Kevin Jones, the first-rounder out of Virginia Tech who has been running with the first team, are questionable.

    Carolina at Washington

Carolina coach John Fox said starting quarterback Jake Delhomme will play the opening quarter. It’s not clear whether Rodney Peete or Chris Weinke will follow Delhomme, but Peete has been running mostly with the second team in camp.

Starting receivers Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad are both listed as questionable.

Washington will start Patrick Ramsey at quarterback after he relieved starter Mark Brunnell in Monday’s 20-17 win over Denver. Ramsey is expected to play the first quarter and into the second where he will then will be followed by Brunell, Tim Hasselbeck and Gibran Hamdan.

Starting offensive tackle Jon Jansen is out after rupturing his Achilles in Monday’s opener.

    Cleveland at Tennessee

Jeff Garcia will start at quarterback in his Cleveland debut. He will be followed by Kelly Holcomb, Todd Husak and Nate Hybl, although the exact amount of playing time has not been determined.

Coach Butch Davis said rookie tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr., the team’s first-round draft pick who signed a contract this week, would be a game-time decision. Davis also indicated that his starters would play the entire first quarter.

Tennessee plans to play starting quarterback Steve McNair just two series at the most. Veteran back-up Billy Volek will follow while Jason Gesser and Robert Kent will split time in the second half.

The starting offensive line could play into the second quarter according to coach Jeff Fisher.

The team is hurting along the defensive line as tackles Albert Haynesworth and James Atkins are out with injuries.

    Arizona at Minnesota

Josh McCown, Shaun King and rookie John Navarre will share the playing time at quarterback. They won’t be able to connect with either Bryant Johnson or Anquan Boldin as those two receivers are out with injuries.

Also, running backs Marcel Shipp and Larry Croom won’t play due to injuries.

New coach Dennis Green said his starters would play the entire first quarter. The second unit would play the second quarter and part of the third with the third unit finishing the game.

Minnesota will start Daunte Culpepper under center and he’ll be followed by Gus Frerotte and Shaun Hill. The exact playing time has yet to be decided.

Coach Mike Tice said that most of his starters would be out of the game after the second or third series.

    Dallas at Houston

Dallas coach Bill Parcells has said that he will give his three quarterbacks equal playing time. Vinny Testaverde will start and will be followed by Drew Henson and Tony Romo.

Nose tackle Leonardo Carson and strong safety Darren Woodson will not play.

Houston quarterback David Carr is expected to play the first one or two series and will be followed by Tony Banks. Dave Ragone is set to take over sometime in the third quarter.

Coach Dom Capers is leaning towards holding out starting running back Domanick Davis out of the game.

    Oakland at San Francisco

New Oakland coach Norv Turner has said that starting quarterback Rich Gannon will play about 10-12 plays against San Francisco. Gannon will be followed by Kerry Collins, Marques Tuiasosopo and possibly Tee Martin. Each will have a specific number of scripted plays.

Oakland is doing some shifting with its linebacking corps with middle linebacker Napoleon Harris out with a knee injury.

San Francisco quarterback Tim Rattay is still experiencing pain in his throwing arm, which means Ken Dorsey will get the start. He’ll give way to Brandon Doman in the second quarter with rookie Cody Pickett, the former Washington standout, expected to play the final quarter.

San Francisco is seeking some depth at the fullback position while Jasen Isom recovers from a knee injury.

    Indianapolis at San Diego

Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning is expected to take about a dozen snaps. Corey Sauter will take over for the second and third quarters with Jim Sorgi stepping in under center in the fourth.

Five of the team’s six injured players who won’t play on Saturday are on the defensive side of the ball, including linebacker Kendyll Pope.

San Diego is thin at the quarterback spot with rookie Philip Rivers holding out and Doug Flutie sidelined by recent knee surgery. Consequently, Drew Brees will start and will give way to Cleo Lemon sometime in the second or third quarter.

Wide receiver Tim Dwight, linebacker Donnie Edwards and defensive tackle DeQuincy Scott are out with injuries.

ST. LOUIS (Marquis)+$125 over ATLANTA (Ortiz)
We're more than happy to take the Cardinals as an underdog (14-7 in that role in '04) even against a team as hot as the Braves are.
St. Louis was 15-16 on May 8, but have become the best team in MLB since then. They've won 60 of their last 83 games, that's .723 base-ball, folks, are 20-6 since the All-Star break and have won eight of their last ten games with a team ERA of 2.61. St. Louis has the best road record (39-18, +$1975)including a 31-14 (+$1640) mark against righthanders.
