Season record: 201-203 - 17.73 UNITS
OVER 8 STL (CARPENTER)/FLA (BECKETT) -111 - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
Beckett has not been sharp since returning from the DL. He gave up 5 ER in 4 IP in his last start against the weak hitting Arizona lineup. He now faces the powerful Cardinal lineup, so if he's still not sharp, he could be in trouble. Carpenter had a disappointing month of July. He rebounded in his last start, but that was against Montreal. Eight runs shouldn't be too tough to overcome, given the recent performances of these two starters.
NYM (TRACHSEL) -123 over Hou (Munro) - 1 UNIT - 4:10pm Pacific
Trachsel is much better at home, and should match up favorably against the fourth and fifth starters of his opponents in this situation.
CLE (DURBIN) -114 over Tor (Bush) - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
This will be the second time in five days that the Cleveland lineup will face the rookie Bush. This should give Cleveland the advantage, given their excellent offense. Durbin is in the same situation as Bush, but Cleveland's offense is definitely better than Toronto's, so they should be better able to take advantage of the second look.
KC (GREINKE) +155 over CHW (Garland) - 1 UNIT - 5:05pm Pacific
Greinke has a 1.15 WHIP and OBA of .250. A quality righty like this should have the advantage against the righty dominated lineup of the Sox. This held true in his last start, where he gave up only 1 ER on 3 hits and 6 Ks in 7 IP against the White Sox. Not too concerned about the familiarity factor here, as Greinke's stuff is great. Garland is pitching like a borderline fifth starter right now, and KC lit him up in his last start. KC's offense stinks, but Garland has the ability to provide them with some relief.
NYY (BROWN) -135 over Tex (Drese) - 1 UNIT - 5:05pm Pacific
Drese's home numbers are pretty incredible, but his peripheral numbers remain relatively unchanged since 2002. On the plus side, his BB/9 has improved, and he has become an extreme groundballer, which is the main reason for his success at hitter friendly Arlington. However, he remains a soft tosser with a very low K/9 rate, which indicates that he's been pitching over his head. Sheffield and Jeter have turned it on now, so this will be a very tough lineup for him. It seems as if Brown's rest on the DL has served him well, as he's come up with two dominating performances. The park factor shouldn't hurt him, as he too relies on the groundball.
OVER 8.5 DET (JOHNSON)/OAK (ZITO) -109 - 1 UNIT - 7:05pm Pacific
Johnson has been very inconsistent this year. He has pitched well on the road, but I view that as kinda flukey, as his home park should be able to get him better numbers. Zito has been a big disappointment, and hitters are hitting almost .290 against him. Even during his recent three game winning streak, he didn't resemble his old self. I can't see him doing well against the Detroit lineup, who performs well against lefties and can hit on the road.GLTA

Vegas Experts Tip of the Day
San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates, Tuesday, August 10, 2004, 7:05 P.M. EDT EST
The Bucs struggled the past week on the coast vs. contending teams in L.A. and San Diego but should take comfort from being at home vs. the equally struggling Giants. The club has won 6-of-9 started by Josh Fogg at home and he has a 3.68 ERA over his last three starts. The Giants and their entire staff (with the exception of #1 starter Jason Schmidt) have struggled to the point where no one is sure anymore what their roles are. Tomko was in the bullpen at last glance but here he is starting again despite a 6.00 ERA over his last three outs. And if Mgr. Felipe Alou goes to the pen, as he often does, he finds a unit with a collective ERA on the season of over 5.00.

Kansas City +160 vs. Chicago WS
The Kansas City Royals and Zack Greinke travel to Chicago to battle the White Sox and Jon Garland in this first of three at the Cell. We used this pitching match-up for a free winner last week and see no reason not to use the play again. Greg Maddux has been in the news winning his 300th on Sunday and deservedly so, and the 20-year-old Greinke compares favorably to Maddux as a thinker out on the mound. His stuff is similar as well, changing speeds and moving the ball in and out. Greinke holds a superb strike out to walk ratio of 43:10 in his last nine starts. I think he found himself a couple starts ago. After getting hit hard in the first inning against Cleveland, he decided to trust his stuff after that being more aggressive. Again, Garland showing no signs of moving forward. The White Sox have lost his last five starts as he’s given up 21 earned runs in 32 innings. We went against the Sox last night with a free play winner and will continue to look to do so. Play the Royals at a sweet price.
Recommendation: Kansas City
