Oakland has won eight straight and 11/12 and the A's are a perfect 9-0 on the road since 1997 with Barry Zito when the posted total is either 9 or 9½. Oakland has the best record in inter-league play since it began (6-0 this year). The A's are 8-0 the last three years after scoring six or more runs in six consecutive games. St. Louis has rotated wins and defeats in nine consecutive games. If the pattern hold true tonight, they will lose. Matt Morris hasn't been nearly as reliable in 2004 as he has been in previous seasons. In his last two starts, Morris has yielded 18 hits alone.
The Cardinals are 5-13 with Morris the last three years if he is working on either five or six days of rest. Zito is certainly well rested as he hasn't taken the hill since June 8th or a week ago tonight. Albert Pujols remains a question mark tonight for the Cardinals, still being plagued by that hamstring injury.
Carlos Zambrano may be the best pitcher in the National League right now having lost only once since April. In his last 8 starts, Zambrano has allowed only 11 earned runs in 58 innings for a 1.70 ERA with 59 strikeouts. On the other hand, Houston’s Wade Miller has struggled at time and has not performed as consistently as expected. He also has not been very effective at home going (2-3) with a 4.66 ERA.
The Cubbies have played strong on the road this year and with the hotter arm on the mound are a solid value play Tuesday night.
